Tap-Repeatedly/Four Fat Chicks
The Thing is the finest game sequel to a movie ever created! On its own, it's a compelling, tension-building, heart-pounding tale of "haunted science station" exploration. There's not only a monster to be dealt with and a narrative and mystery to resolve (with a satisfying conclusion), but also a need to constantly be aware of the mental state of your associates, on whom you depend. In relation to the film, the story line continues without a hitch, and there are subtle references to Carpenter's work scattered throughout. Indeed, the Director himself has given his blessing to the "faithfulness" of the game to his masterwork. Both as a work on its own and in relation to the film, the design and execution of The Thing earns a Gold Star from this reviewer. So see the film, take a little break, then turn down the lights, put on headphones, and prepare yourself for the atmosphere, anticipation, apprehension, anxiety and action of The Thing.

It's a short romp as well, but that didn't stop Max Payne from being lauded and neither should it stop The Thing from being appreciated either. What you get is an occasionally scary, action orientated third-person blast. The story really is very well done and you'll want to keep pushing forward to see what happens next. Graphically it's a treat and wonderfully atmospheric. I didn't really know what to expect from this title but it's more than proven its worth, definitely one of the best games I've played this year. Lots of fun and definitely worthy of your attention. I'd go as far as saying this is the best story I've played through since Half-Life.

This game is incredible. I will, however, say this: Don't ignore that M stamp on the box, people. This game is gruesome and disturbing. An odd mix of 3rd person shooter and adventure game, it manages to pull both off in one nice and easy package. Grab this game! If you haven't seen the movie, make sure you pick it up first, though. There are many references and movie related Easter eggs that you will miss if you don't. With only minor flaws and an innovative gameplay idea, this title is a must own!

Worth Playing
This is simply one of the best HORROR/ACTION games we have ever played! The biggest question about this game was wether or not Computer Artworks would/could manage to properly implement the innovative fear/trust system, and we can safely say "they pulled it off". The AI for the NPC's is quite incredible and far from predictable. The right atmosphere for a "killer" game is present, so if you run out to purchase this game later this week, bring your flaslight because you never know what Things might be waiting for you when the lights go out!

The Thing has a well-balanced combination of puzzles, exploration and non-stop action, making it as successful as an action game can be. It delivers an unforgettable experience, with only a few setbacks that keep it from being a definite Must Have.

If you are The Thing fan, you won't be disappointed because the game has terrific atmosphere. It's definitely one of the best horror-action games I have ever played. I strongly recommend you to play this game in dark room with headphones.

The Thing has come out of nowhere and mutated into something that many of us will love. Resident Evil and Half Life have a new half brother.

I’m not quite sure what made them produce a game based on a moderately successful science fiction/horror movie of maybe 20 years ago, but this is one of the best PC ported games that I’ve played, a few graphics glitches aside. Not for the squeamish, full of bodies, blood, beheadings, and disembowlings, it should probably be rated G for Gross.

The Thing is a breath of fresh air with just a tinge of something stagnant. It adds multiple innovations to the survival horror formula and improves on that genre immensely. Unfortunately, The Thing also holds on to some of the most annoying conventions of the genre. Even with those problems, The Thing is the best straightforward horror game on the PC so far this year.

In the end, The Thing has plenty of good ideas. It tries hard to be more than yet another average third-person actioner. And though it is gripping for a while, at the end of the day it doesn't all gel together as well as it could have. It's not scary enough to work as a classic 'horror' game, it's not action packed enough to work as a top-notch shooter, and it's not tactical enough to pass as any kind of strategy game. We hoped for a classic genre-bending fright-fest. As it is, it's just another good film spin off.

At the very end, I was sort of disappointed to find out that the game is fairly short. The overall impression was also reduced with those sound bugs and camera issues I mentioned. Still, the excellent visuals and squad-based gameplay compensate for all of that and they make The Thing a truly entertaining product.

The Thing has a few problems, but the good out way the bad. The violence is disturbing at times. The language may be shocking to some, but I've played through The Longest Journey. Bare in mind these soldiers enjoy cursing while they kill things.

GameSpot
The Thing is kind of short, it's not especially effective at making you feel afraid, its most intriguing gameplay elements are somewhat extraneous, and it suffers from a wonky control scheme. Yet, thanks to some high production values and consistently interesting action scenes, The Thing rises above these flaws. It could have been great, but in light of the checkered history of movie-licensed games, being good at all is a pretty impressive achievement.

At least The Thing starts out strong. It's the sort of game you don't have to feel bad about not finishing. Of course, you're paying for a full game, so if dollar value is your main criteria, you might be better off renting John Carpenter's movie, reading the original short story, and then having a laugh at the walking carrot in the 1951 version.

So, as it turns out, I have to recommend against buying this game unless you've got a serious attachment to the film. The game does do a good job to stay accurate with the film, it just doesn't do a good job incorporating the film into a really good game. If you could play this multiplayer...trying to figure out who "The Thing" was...this would probably be a smash hit. As it is...I think it'll probably have to settle for being nothing more than a cult classic, especially considering how buggy the game is. Look on the board and check out the unhappy patchers. I had a problem with mind where dialogue just suddenly cut out, and I missed a chunk of the story.
