Game Revolution
While Throne of Darkness is not the groundbreaking game that Diablo was, it certainly has improved nearly every aspect of the Action/RPG genre. Heavy duty item customization, a superb setting and fun, tactical strategy leads to a must-have for fans of the genre.

In the end, I only found the three or four things I mentioned above to be problems and I feel that in weighing the pluses and minuses, the negative aspects of the game only merit a 1/2 GiN Gem loss and I am happy to give 4 and 1/2 GiN gems to a game that I consider to be one of the best games I have played all year.

Trotzdem zieht mich Throne of Darkness immer wieder an den Monitor.

Everyone makes such a big deal out of this game being exactly like Diablo. But while the two games certainly have a lot in common, there are more than enough differences between the two to make Throne of Darkness stand out on its own. The mythological, Japanese setting is the most apparent difference but the real innovation here is the game's focus on group adventuring. Sometimes the design decisions beneath this approach work, sometimes they don't and sometimes they don't even make any difference whatsoever.

Throne of Darkness is a good game overall, despite some underdeveloped features and a few unnecessary design elements. The simple mechanics, the constant action, the continuous discovery of newer, more powerful equipment, and the generally well done graphics and sound all add up to a game that's certainly addictive, just as it was meant to be. Throne of Darkness isn't an overly ambitious game and doesn't deviate too much from the formula that Diablo popularized--but it's a perfect example of why that formula can be enjoyable.

Throne of Darkness is a game hidden behind minor design flaws and slight graphical inferiority. The game itself is very playable and extremely stable (a rarity in games nowadays), but little annoyances get in the way. The music and graphics won't impress you, but the gameplay should, even with the problems. You will come back to play the game, it might take a few minutes, or it might take days. So if you don't mind a game with many similarities, but not quite as good, to Diablo 2, this could very well be your game.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Sierra and Click Entertainment’s Japanese-inspired role-playing game impressively captures the spirit of the folklore and the land, casting humans and demons into a world where each co-exist believably. With interesting plots and monsters, impressive graphics, and vigorous sound, Throne of Darkness is a strong offering for fans of mythology, samurai, or ancient Japan. However, the poor quality of the game’s AI, the unbalanced multiplayer action, and the lack of customizable options, along with some gameplay issues, only slightly raise the product above an average Diablo clone.

Computer Gaming World (CGW)
It’s this sense of information overload (plus a few other slight design flaws) that really detracts from TOD. It’s an ambitious, fun, and fast-paced DIABLO clone with a refreshing setting and some great ideas. Reality, however, had to come in and punch the game in the face a couple of times to prove that not all ideas pan out when executed.

What we're left with isn't a bad game per se, but in many ways it's an unmanageable game that takes the simplicity of a certain famous clickfest of a game (whose name you can probably guess by now), complete with that game's inadequate AI, and renders it too complicated to be completely fun.

Throne of Darkness is your quintessential bargain bin release. Over here you’ve got mediocre gameplay, average graphics, and typical sound. Then on this side you’ve got a loose storyline, uninteresting characters, and a poorly designed menu system. If this were selling for seven dollars, I would say you’ve got yourself a doozy of a game. However, shelling out 50 bucks for something you’re going to forget about the second you quit playing is a little like buying an expensive dinner then throwing it directly in the toilet.

Super Play

ActionTrip
And finally, if you are loyal to the good-old Diablo, Throne of Darkness will probably disappoint you. The flexible gamers might come to like the game because of the gameplay simplicity, pretty animations and constant action. This title might as well help you pass time while you wait for a serious RPG to appear. The fact remains that it has nothing new to bring, neither in gameplay nor in graphics.

Game Over Online
Throne of Darkness really fails to meet many of the expectations I had for it. It sounded like a terrific idea, but somehow got extremely muddled along the way. The control, while based off the simple designs of Diablo, has somehow managed to turn into a manipulation battle just to live through any major confrontations. It’s not an easy game to get into and many gamers will easily find themselves put off by the management. I became very impatient with the game before I had even gotten far into it. Throne of Darkness could have been a great game, but its convoluted controls and unappealing gameplay really tore down the fundamentals that make a good game.

To say that Throne of Darkness is like Diablo 2 set in feudal Japan isn't a fair comparison because it might mislead people into thinking this game is cool. Quite the contrary, everything about this game screams Blizzard rip-off, and an exceptionally poor one at that. Go buy the Diablo 2 expansion pack instead.
