Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Covert Ops Essentials

This is one hell of a game. The multiplayer is amazing, and the single-player can be very rewarding if you're willing to go the extra mile, and you have to be willing to spend a lot of time perfecting your skills. If you want tons of frags and high-speed mayhem, you'll need to look elsewhere.

All you Clancy fans out there may have to change your pants after spending five minutes with Covert Ops Essentials. Anyone who’s ever read a Clancy novel and wondered what it would be like to actually be in the action will have all questions answered with COE.

The nine missions in Essentials are challenging and cool, but the real goods are on the game’s training CD. It’s an information stockpile of fascinating information, videos, pictures, and tests to see how much information you managed to absorb into your noggin. The topics range from tactics and weapons to psychology and history. I found myself deeply fascinated by most of the material, especially the historical stuff. I was a little disappointed in the future weaponry section of the training. The military is working on pretty interesting stuff and it’s being perfectly open about it, but only two new technologies were mentioned. I also thought the speculation about sticking with gunpowder was a little shortsighted. Not an ultimate encyclopedia, but a great jumping point for Clancy addicts and war nerds.

Die erste Zusatz-CD zum prototypischen Taktik-Shooter Rainbow Six enttäuschte mit einer zu knappen Spielzeit. Wird Covert Ops ein ähnlich kurzes Vergnügen? Flüsternd informieren Sie die Kameraden über das Kopfmikrofon, dass wenige Meter vor Ihnen ein gegnerischer Scharfschütze lauert. Ein Teamkamerad eröffnet das Feuer, Sie nutzen die Verwirrung, um vorzupreschen und den Feind unschädlich zu machen, Sie geben die Erfolgsmeldung durch: "Tango am Boden". Wie im Originalspiel kommt es in Covert Ops auf die Taktik an.

Covert Ops is echter zo'n product waar je de volle prijs voor neertelt en eigenlijk maar drie nieuwe missies/maps voor terugkrijgt. Daarom lijkt het 'game' ons enkel geschikt als uitstekend - maar jammer genoeg moeilijk hanteerbaar - encyclopedisch werk.

Die Covert Ops eignen sich daher eigentlich nur für echte Anhänger von Rainbow Six, aber für die entspricht das Spiel allen Erwartungen. Keine großartigen Neuerungen, wenig Spielinhalt, Spaß macht's trotzdem.

Spastic players hoping for a full-fledged mission pack or campaign will find naught but a hefty handbook on field operations and a laughable smattering of new missions. In the end the purchase comes down to one simple decision: are you looking for a full-fledged game or a Green Beret's idea of edutainment?

As I lit my intermission fag, I was looking forward to the next six levels ('nine all new levels featuring never before seen missions' the ads proclaim), when I realised the other six are small training levels in Hereford. I completed a couple in a few minutes, but then gave up in disgust. This is why the Urban Ops add-on pissed me off: too few missions - and there are even fewer in Covert Ops. To Red Storm's credit, this doesn't require either R6 or RS to play; and if the Training Disc is your cup of tea, then maybe you'll be ecstatic. But I play R6 for gaming, and only die-hards who have to have it all should pay £25 for three proper missions.

Covert Ops Essentials is een bedroevend zwakke standalone uitbreiding en uw aandacht niet waard.

Red Storm Interactive has done something very unique with Covert Ops Essentials, they've combined an expansion pack with a multimedia counter-terrorism reference. It might have worked if they had actually included... an expansion pack. Nine, cough*three*cough, missions doesn't quite constitute an expansion pack to me. It also would have helped if the information from the training program translated at all to the missions provided in Covert Ops Essentials. Gamers aren't going to improve their skills by reading up on sniper tactics and then heading out into the battlefield known as Rainbow Six. So, what you're left with is an encyclopedia that will probably interest fans of Tom Clancy and those interested in learning more about terrorism, but as an expansion pack in the Rainbow Six series, Covert Ops Essentials is a poor shot.

As soon as Red Storm announced that it was working on a new entry in its Rainbow Six series, the Internet was abuzz with speculation. Could the game's title possibly be longer than the one used for Red Storm's last product, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear Mission Pack: Urban Operations? Sadly, the answer is no. Compared to that game, Red Storm's newest product, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Covert Ops Essentials, is downright tongue-tied. Unfortunately, it has more serious problems than its title. Essentials is a stand-alone Rainbow Six product that's half Rogue Spear mission pack and half civil service test simulator.

Rainbow Six: COE is een extraatje voor de allertrouwste hardcore fans maar ok die zullen drie nieuwe missies behoorlijk karig vinden. En wie betaalt er nu tachtig piek om in de schoolbanken te gaan zitten?

The new maps lack everything that has made the game series what it has been known for. The single player games are as they always have been, but nothing new there really. All hardcore Rainbow Six fans will be very upset about this new game, and have to give the game a score of 50. So what it really comes down to is what could have been a great game, or even a good add on (like Urban Ops) is nothing more then a big let down..

Un titre dispensable, pour le joueur et la série qui n'apporte rien de nouveau et ne fait que mettre en exergue des défauts que l'on pardonnait plus facilement auparavant. Aucune originalité et une réalisation minimaliste pour un soft qui n'a rien « d'Essential » et que l'on gagnera à éviter.

Неужели западные геймеры стали настолько всеядны, что производители даже не утруждаются скрывать свои намерения нажиться исключительно на фанатизме и преданности игроков? В итоге, два диска, набитые всякой дребеденью вроде центра подготовки спецназовцев, какими-то интервью и демами Bang! и Shadow Watch. Если завтра коробки с Rainbow Six появятся в казуальных супермаркетах, подпираемые с разных сторон барбями, оленями, покемонами и рыбалками, я не удивлюсь. Я даже ничего не скажу. Так и должно быть. Всем спасибо, все свободны.

Après la trop légère extension Rogue Spear Mission Pack : Urban Operations, on attendait beaucoup de Covert Ops à tous les niveaux. Malheureusement, le dernier produit de Red Storm aura des allures de haute trahison pour tous les fans de la saga Rainbow Six. Deux CD-Rom pour 250 F dont la moitié est constituée d'une documentation historique mal pensée et l'autre de 9 missions (dont seulement trois en mode "opérationnel"), c'est court ! Sans changement ni amélioration, Rainbow Six : Covert Ops semble très loin d'être indispensable... à moins que vous fassiez partie de ces fanatiques qui dépenseraient une fortune pour posséder TOUTE la saga !

Redstorm kündigte für Covert Operations neun neue Missionen an, auf die ich schon ganz scharf war. Im Licht betrachtet sind es aber nur drei. Dazu sind die auch noch so mies designt, dass sie eigentlich nicht mal als Download Daseinsberechtigung haben. Und wer will schon ellenlange Texte am Monitor lesen? Wenn ich ein Spiel kaufe, will ich spielen und nicht lernen. Rogue Spear war für mich damals Spannung pur und jeden einzelnen Pfennig wert. Covert Operations ist dagegen nur Abzocke.
