Total Annihilation: The Core Contingency

Not a whole lot to say, but “This pack ROCKS!” I personally wasn’t really impressed with Total Annihilation when I first saw it, but my attitude changed entirely after I installed this expansion pack and saw all the new units and some of the 50 new multiplayer maps. As an expansion pack, this is probably the best I’ve seen. It definitely does the most enhancements to the original game of any I’ve seen. My only concern with it is the apparent imbalance that is introduced by one of the new units, the “Core Krogoth,” but since I started this review Cavedog has released another one of their downloadable units, the “Arm Shooter,” that appears to be intended to balance this out.

The Core Contingency is an excellent add-on to an already excellent game. It keeps up the quality of the original game without appearing to be just more of the same. The sheer number of new units, terrain types, and missions make this pack look and feel like a new game, one that has all of the excellent gameplay as the original. The full version of Total Annihilation is required to play The Core Contingency, and the price tag on the pack is reduced accordingly. If you loved the original game, this is a must-have. Bottom Line: All the great gameplay of Total Annihilation featuring 75 new units, 6 new worlds, 25 new missions, and 50 new multiplayer maps. Not just more of the same, The Core Contingency has the look and feel of a new game with the familiarity of an old favorite. The map and mission editor used by the developers is included so that fans may make their own add-ons. A must have for TA fans.

Allein die Daten dürften schon jeden Total Annihilation-Fan überzeugen. Durch die neuen Einheiten hat Cavedog außerdem die beiden Kontrahenten für den Mehrspieler-Modus ausgezeichnet ausbalanciert. Richtig Abwechslung kommt durch die Unterwasser-Einheiten ins Spiel. Gerade auf den Inselkarten führen ganz neue Strategien zum Sieg. Mit dieser kolossalen Mission-CD sollte der Spielspaß gesichert sein, zumindest bis der Nachfolger Total Annihilation 2 erscheint.

Spätestens mit der Missions-CD erlaubt Total Annihilation riesige Massenschlachten, in denen kein Truppentyp zweimal vorkommt: Mit den 75 neuen Einheiten und Bauten wird das ohnehin schon rappelvolle Arsenal gewaltig aufgestockt. Fraglich ist nur, wer die noch alle unterscheiden soll. Wenn Sie Bombastschlachten mögen, sollten Sie sich das Addon zulegen; Freunde ausgeklügelter Strategien kommen jedoch etwas zu kurz.

Slutsatsen är ofrånkomlig: om du fortfarande älskar TA i multiplayer och skirmish så är Core Contingency värt att skaffa. Annars kan du hoppa över det.

Wer braucht schon Atmosphäre, solang's scheppert und kracht? Hochauflösendes 3D-Gelände, maßstäbesetzende Effekthascherei, Einheiten-Hundertschaften und explosives Multiplayer-Gaming erkauft man sich bei der Mission-Disk mit immergleichen "Mach alles platt!"-Missionen und steriler Grafik. Wer einen Internet-Zugang hat und die Core-Offensive des Editors wegen kauft, ist fast schon selbst schuld: Das wenig benutzerfreundliche Utility und mehrere Grafik-Sets können von Cavedogs Internetseite (www.cavedog.com) kostenlos heruntergeladen werden – das reicht zumindest zum unverbindlichen Antesten.
