I got into the cult of Tron rather late, not seeing the ground-breaking (and still extremely entertaining) 1982 film until the mid-90s, and therefore never having much interest in the arcade game. All that changed with the release of the 20th Anniversary DVD. As a recent devotee of the film that started it all, I relished with great anticipation the arrival of Tron 2.0, a PC game set in the Tron universe 20 years after the film’s events.
PC Gamer (Nov, 2003)
No matter what you think of the movie, TRON 2.0 stands out as a thoroughly entertaining, infinitely playable, and visually spectacular experience. No question, Monolith pulled off a winner. Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait 20 more years for TRON 3.0.
Tron 2.0 is a triumphant blend of shooter action, role-playing elements, and strategy presented via some of tile best graphics of the year. It’s just too bad the light cycles suck, but more on that later.

Tron 2.0 is a grand achievement for Monolith. The team has managed to combine more or less everything a Tron fan ever wanted from a Tron game with the mechanics that made the NOLF series so loveable, to come up with a fabulous, compelling action title. It certainly isn't going to win any awards for pushing the envelope, but it's a damn sight better than most of the generic FPS tripe we've seen pass through the office over the last year or so.
Although my expectations were sky high, I'm pleased to report that Tron 2.0 fulfilled all of them. What I encountered here was a very difficult combination: incredible creative innovation combined with a high degree of faithfulness to the original film. Playing a game taking place within a computer on your own PC has never been more fun. Monolith and Buena Vista Interactive both deserve tremendous praise for spending the time necessary to produce what can only be considered a masterpiece. While by no means perfect, as a few small areas could use improvement, I couldn't have asked for much more. Anyone who loved the movie (and who is eagerly anticipating its sequel) or who loves computer technology needs to go out and buy this release immediately. Those who missed the flick or find it too dated will find that this new recreational title incorporates all the sophistication of all the latest developments in the computer industry.

When I got my hands on it and installed it I, the 26 year old now computer games freak, was shocked for the second time. I could never believe they would be capable of redesigning so well the whole universe and thus, recreating the original feeling the movie was inspiring you. I can even say it's better than the movie and this is because they had access to the original sketches and even some undisclosed ones.

It’s been a long time since I first watched Tron, and to tell you honestly, I really don’t remember too much of the movie save for the main gist of the plot. As such, I had my reservations about playing a game that was based on a franchise that I have very little interest in. If you have any of those reservations as well, do yourself a favor and ignore any doubts you may have and at least play the demo and give this game a chance. Tron 2.0 is very creative, full of good ideas, and combines elements of different types of games. The overall result is a great looking game that is a joy to play and you don’t have to know about the movie to enjoy the storyline.
GameSpy (Aug 27, 2003)
TRON 2.0 is a stellar game, one that dares to venture beyond the standard shooter formula and pulls it off with style. TRON fans will undoubtedly get the most out of it, but even if you're just a fan of action games, or heck, just games in general -- you should run out to the store and jack in to TRON 2.0 as soon as possible. Just remember to keep one finger on the quicksave key.

End of Line.
Game Captain (Sep 19, 2003)

Met Tron 2.0 bewijst Monolith (No One Lives Forever 1 en 2) opnieuw dat het tot de absolute top behoort qua first person actiespellen.
PC Action (Aug 26, 2003)
ActionTrip (Aug 26, 2003)
In terms of presentation and overall quality of the game, TRON 2.0 is admirable. A decent story; well-told and fitted excellently into a video game; beautiful artwork and level design are all essential parts of a good game, and TRON 2.0 has them all. There are numerous aspects of the game that cling strongly to the Tron world, so a lot of gamers may find the experience frustrating due to a lack of common action FPS gameplay elements. Those of you willing to try something fresh and unique will surely appreciate TRON 2.0 for its quality design and excellent narrative that deserves the attention of every true sci-fi fan.
PC Zone (Oct 18, 2003)
The framerate issues are a shame, because in every other respect Tron 2.0 is a neat piece of work. Nearly everything the game tries is accomplished with style and apparent ease, and quality and originality is evident throughout. Once public servers are running, we'll be first in line to try the disc tournaments and light-cycle grids which come as their very own sub-games. Until then, we'll stay busy burning our retinas with gorgeous neon geometry in the single-player campaign.
Netjak (Aug 28, 2003)
I’d like to give Tron a 9.5. Because that’s what it probably deserves outside of the light cycle and jumping fetishes. But since I can’t just excise the bad parts from the splendidly good, I can’t give it a 9.5. So. –1 for the excessive jumping. Light cycles drop down the game a bit because of the way they just get flung about. It really kicks you out of the continuity of the game. A -.2 for that…So, all tolled 8.3. (In case you wondering why there’s such a big disparity in the general scores and the overall.)
Game Revolution (Aug 01, 2003)
Tron 2.0 uploads a serious dose of style into the FPS scene and is easily recommended to fans of the genre. The subpar AI and annoying platform segments hold it back a little, though the great delivery and lengthy, engrossing Campaign keep it ahead of the curve, so check it out.

Computer Active (Oct 30, 2003)
Where Tron 2 really shines, however. is in its design. The game's graphics were developed by the film's conceptual designer and anyone who's seen Tron will recognise the look immediately. The graphics don't break any new ground, but they perfectly realise the world hidden inside a computer without being overly flashy. The sound is equally well-judged and, overall, this is a refreshing take on a genre that's starting to get a little stale.
Wham! gaming (Apr 02, 2004)
Well there’s good and there’s bad – so where does TRON 2.0 stand in the grand scheme of gaming? It won’t win game of the year when it’s time to tally the votes for 2003, but don’t be surprised if it’s one of the highest selling games regardless. The same reason that will keep this game from being game of the year, will also give it great sales: TRON 2.0 has something for everyone. It doesn’t try to blow away any one particular segment of the gaming public, but offers enough for everyone to warrant picking it up. It’s not often I say this, the hardcore audience may be vocal with the problems, but it won’t stop TRON 2.0 from selling millions.
IGN (Aug 22, 2003)
I just watched the original TRON again to refresh my memory, mostly because I had remembered the movie as being so different and exciting. And while I still liked it, and it's still quite different than any other movie that has ever been released in concept and art style, it definitely wasn't as exciting as I remember it. Maybe my childish fascination with the art and the fun I remember having throwing dishes around skewed my memory a bit... I don't know. Unfortunately TRON 2.0 is sitting much the same way with me. I'm looking at it fondly because I enjoyed the story, presentation, and beautiful artwork, but the game itself wasn't exactly the most exciting gameplay experience I've ever had on the PC.
PC Gamer UK (Oct, 2003)
They never rewarded Ennio Morricone for any of his marvellous scores. They sent the sublime Brief Encounter home empty-handed. They doggedly refused to recognise the directorial talents of Hitchcock, Kubrick or Peckinpah. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have indeed made some grotesque mistakes over the years, but perhaps none more grievous than failing to nominate Tron in the visual effects and art direction categories. In terms of character and script, it might have been forgettable, but the extraordinary combination of live action, luminous backlit animation, groundbreaking CGI and stunning Syd Mead/Moebius sci-fi styling remains to this day one of the most striking artistic visions ever committed to celluloid.
GameSpot (Aug 27, 2003)
The 1982 film Tron may not hold up by today's standards, but it was a revelation for anyone who grew up during the video game boom of the early '80s. The movie was filled with vivid computer-generated graphics, and it put the lead character first in a real arcade and then in neon-lit cyberspace, where anthropomorphic "programs" faced off in video-game-style challenges. For young gamers, at the time, watching Tron was like dying and going to cinematic heaven. Tron gave birth to some fun games back in the day, and now Monolith brings you Tron 2.0 for the PC. Like the film, Tron 2.0 treads a fine line between cool and corny, and, also like the film, it often stumbles into the latter. Like the movie, the game also boasts a unique visual style. However, despite its great look and some exciting moments, Tron 2.0 is a fairly conventional and uneven shooter.
Gamesdog (Dec 16, 2003)
It's a shame that Tron 2.0's prospects were damaged by a month-long delay in an empty summer when the game could have sold happily to bored gamers everywhere, especially over the summer bank holiday. By now the game will have dropped in price slightly. Download any of the demos first if you're unsure, but Tron 2.0 is that different to any first person shooter released this year (a further step from, for example, the cel-shaded XIII) that it warrants investigation if you're bored with games of the moment. Much like the movie, the ideas come across well even if in some areas, the final execution wasn't perfect.
