Worth Playing (Apr 30, 2012)
Modern Times is a mostly seamless expansion of the base game. The expansion doesn't really change the game fundamentally, but it adds more to the endgame of a city. With the exception of the new edicts, the expansion feels like it has always been a part of the game, adding clear, logical upgrades for many buildings as well as some that address deficiencies of the original game. Though you can't use the new content in the vanilla campaign, the new campaign provides for plenty of new ground, and overall, the expansion is a new breath of life as well as a means of strengthening the base game.

Tropico 4: Modern Times gives the core game a much needed content injection, and turns Tropico 4 into a better game. Some additions have a larger impact on Tropican economic planning than others, but Modern Times is well worth checking out for any fan of Tropico. I'm still waiting for that sequel to Tropico 2: Pirate Cove, though.

I have some qualms about Modern Times’ balancing, particularly the ludicrously profitable factories and fish farms, but those cast almost unnoticeable shadows on the game’s otherwise impressive accomplishments. At this point I hope SimCity lives up to Tropico, not the other way around.

The end of the current Tropico engine is a pretty cool place. Recommended for anybody looking for a breezy, colorful city-builder.

Overall, I enjoyed the time I spent with Tropico 4: Modern Times. The add-on is lighthearted and breezy, and with all of the new buildings and edicts, you now have even more ways to build and run your perfect Caribbean island. Plus, since the campaign takes about 35 hours to complete (with sandbox mode adding more time to this), and since the add-on only costs $20, Modern Times is even a good deal, and so it's an easy game for me to recommend.

Utrzymanie tropikalnej dyktatury w ryzach w obliczu kryzysów, wojen i szemranych interesów to jeszcze większe wyzwanie.

The truly interesting strategic choices provided by the new buildings and edicts may not seem obvious at first, but clever players will build new strategies around them, like my xenophobic Techno-utopia with the small underclass. Modern Times' strengths really shine in sandbox mode -- an area Tropico 4 shied away from -- which will provide more than enough hours for $20 of game for those who left Tropico 4 wanting more.

Despite the promise held by moving Tropico 4 past its "been there, done that" Cold War setting, Modern Times is about as annoying as the CIA was to Fidel Castro back in the 1970s, with all of their out-there assassination plots like the one with exploding cigars. The campaign wears out its welcome fast by repeating virtually all of the tasks that you faced in the last two Tropico games, albeit with minor face-lifts like groovier apartment buildings and organic cattle ranching. With that said, the core of the game is based on an addictive concept with some lingering appeal held over from the past two games. So fans of the franchise can still find themselves sucked into spending a few more hours in the presidential palace, even while realizing that so much more could have been done with this concept.
