Ultima Online: Third Dawn

Aside from growing pains along the way, Third Dawn is fun as hell to play. The sheer volume of skills your character has to improve upon will have you up at night thinking about the next day’s gaming session. The slick new graphics and low bug rate are welcome sights, but the lag is not…and there is plenty of it. This title lets you play your character however you want to. The only thing holding you back is lack of imagination.

Eine Revolution erlebt Britannia auch mit Third Dawn nicht – Origin konserviert Bewährtes und reichert es mit vorsichtigen Verbesserungen an. Wie der Stopp von UO 2 und die damit verbundene Konzentration auf das bereits von zahlenden Abenteurern bevölkerte Erste Reich ist auch der Anbau des zauberhaften Ilshenar ein Schritt zur Bewahrung wertvoller Pfründe. Jünger wird UO dadurch nicht, und so darf man bereits auf die Vierte Verwandlung gespannt sein.

Da scheiden sich die Geister. Auch wenn Third Dawn durchaus sehr schick anzusehen ist - Britannia bleibt Britannia. Rechtfertigt also das angesprochene Face-Lifting den Kauf des Upgrades? Wird der Spielspaß dadurch gar gesteigert? Während UO-Süchtige diese Frage sicherlich mit einem eindeutigen Ja beantworten und unverzüglich zuschlagen werden, sollten sich andere Spieler den Kauf besser drei Mal überlegen. Denn gerade bei Ultima Online hängt der Spielspaß - meiner Meinung nah - nicht übermäßig von der grafischen Gestaltung ab.

Die Faszination von Ultima Online ist trotz unglaublicher Spieltiefe für viele Zocker nicht nachvollziehbar. Hauptgrund dafür ist die hoffnungslos veraltete Grafik, die trotz einiger Detailänderungen dem Stand von 1997 entspricht. Mit Third Dawn ändert sich das, denn alle Charaktere, Monster, Tiere und Gegenstände tummeln sich nun als 3D-Modelle in Britannia.

Du vet att ditt sociala liv är i fara när ditt virtuella jag ägnar mer tid med sina kompisar än du. Origin Systems har äntligen beslutat att blåsa nytt liv i sitt ständigt växande universum.

If you still have an unfortunate addiction to UO, and a machine with enough memory and a decent 3D card to run it, you’ll probably want this update. Of course, this will likely mean that you’ve now spent around $200 just on the boxed game and updates alone, not to mention what you’re spending on the subscription fees and playguides. But, if it floats your boat, go for it. I gotta give them credit for trying, though. It’s obvious that they want the game to survive, even after all its slings and arrows. The last update with the creation of a non-PK world solved one of the eternal problems, and the continual updates to the feel of the windows are nice. The way they have set up the new graphics also allows them to more easily add in new monsters and items, too, so I’m sure there will be many new patches down the pipeline. Still, the game itself is showing signs of wear.

I’m sure, for Ultima Online fans, this expansion pack is a no-brainer. Unfortunately, with the cancellation of the sequel, expansion packs are all fans have to look forward to, and when I compare this game to the other multiplayer RPGs out there, I just don’t think it has stood the test of time.

As it stands, Ultima Online devotees must be wondering where the series goes from here. If Third Dawn is as technologically advanced as the series is ever going to be, there seems little reason for them to hang around when there are better online RPGs in existence, and many more already in development. Don't get me wrong, UO is a great game, but there are better ones around and if you're new to online RPGs and fancy trying your hand at one of them, you would be much better off taking a look at EverQuest or waiting until Anarchy Online arrives later this year.
