Description

Under Ash is a 3d shooter set in Israeli/Arab disputed territories (Judea and Samaria, also known as the "West Bank") during the first "Intifada", a series of violent riots between Palestinian Arabs and the Israeli Army between 1989 and 1993. Based on several real life accounts of Intifada participants, you take the role of the young Palestinian Arab named Ahmad from East Jerusalem, who has to fight Israeli soldiers in various real-life locations, including Jerusalem, Hebron, and Abraham's Tomb (Machpela Cave). Starting with rocks and slings you'll eventually be able to steal a few weapons and oppose the superiorly equipped Israeli army while still relying on guerrilla tactics.

Trivia

The release of Under Ash, one of the first commercial Arab games, was accompanied by intense anti-Israeli propaganda. Adnan Salim, the general manager of the publishing company Dar Al Fikr, writes on the game's website that "Everywhere the Israeli bugles (sic) will scream, this is violence and terrorism! and the Israelis will plot with many centers in the world, which got tired of the stay of their followers in Israel who tasted the bitterness of the Israeli greed and plots. They want to spit Israel away from them though they sometimes plot with it in silence, dumbness and disregard, and sometimes with unjust loyalty and advocation". He further warns against the "cheating of Beelzebub", as he calls Israel.

The game itself also contains plenty of anti-Israeli rhetoric, the Israeli army is presented as downright evil, inhumane, and overpowered, while there is no mentioning whatsoever of the heavy weaponry the Arabs were using during the second Intifada, such as missile and rocket launchers - the protagonist can fight only with slings and rocks in the game, and the only weapons he can get must be stolen. All references to Arab suicide bombings and other acts of terrorism against Israeli civilians are naturally omitted as well. The "Game Over" message is also characteristic, saying: "You are dead. Now they will get your ID, torture your family, and destroy your house".
