Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun takes place during the years 1836 to 1920. This was the time spanning from after the Napoleonic Wars up to the end of WWI. In our fast-moving time, we tend to believe that mankind has never evolved as much as during the 20th century, but that is not necessarily true. In the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution lay the foundation of the modern world. At the same time, Marxist Socialism was thought up, the machine gun was introduced, electricity was discovered, cars began invading the streets, the US struggled though a civil war, the UK became a global power, Central Europe was changed for good by the formation of Germany, monarchy was replaced by democracy and the list goes on and on..Simulating the 19th century seems to be an insurmountable task, but Paradox Entertainment has used their brilliant formula from the Europa Universalis games and have mastered the challenge perfectly.

Overall, this is an excellent effort from this company. However, that doesn't mean there aern't nits to be picked. Like all Paradox games, it will crash at times, and there are some historical problems. China for example, always becomes very powerful, due to the game's mechanics, when historically, it should be a helpless victim even against marginal powers like Russia. Also, Prussia seems to have outright won or finished second in all seven test campaign games I played. Since Paradox is famous for putting out patches to it's products, hopefully, they will address and correct these flaws in the future. This game is a solid effort, and I highly recommend it for people whom enjoy empire building in the great age of colonialism.

There was a time, kiddies, when games were released in perfect condition, and never required patches. No, really! Stop laughing, and pick yourself up from the floor. It's all true, every last word of it. Sit quietly and Grandpappy Brenesal will tell you exactly what he means, in his typically dazed fashion, while you drink your rum baba.

Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun is a PC release from Strategy First and Paradox Entertainment and it is a mapboard-based strategy game that combines a political-economic base with the turbulent times between the mid-1800s and the early 1900s.
GameSpot (Dec 04, 2003)
Victoria still remains a difficult game to truly like. The numerous bugs, the obtuse interface--combined with the lack of a tutorial--and the design flaws make it positively unfriendly. Nothing draws you in. Despite some wonderful depth and a great alternate-history ambience, this game is more work than play.

Unpatched, the game also suffers from horrible stability and balance issues. It’s too easy to create huge armies and build up ridiculously large treasuries, and the game frequently crashes to the desktop. Victoria could he a classic after a few patches, but in the initial release, you’re paying Paradox to beta test their game.

Puh, starker Tobak, was uns Paradox Entertainment mit „Victoria“ hier vorsetzt.
Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun gets marks for depth and scope, but unfortunately so much of the detail goes to waste due to the frustrating interface, horrendous learning curve, and sparse gameplay options. It gets so frustrating that sometimes it feels like whoever created the interface was angry at you personally for some undisclosed sin. The most died-in-the-wool hardcore strategy fans who have mounds of patience to spare may find months of entertainment value in Victoria, but for most people this will be one that history should best forget.

GameSpy (Dec 30, 2003)
The historical setting and this Age of Imperialism should have made for a wondrous game with numerous possibilities, but Victoria isn't that game. Even fans of Europa Universalis will likely be turned off by the near-unmanageable gameplay and frequent crashes. The ambiguous ending is the least of this title's problems -- chances are the sun will set on this empire-building game long before you have a chance to get there.
