Viper Racing

W porównaniu z Viper Racing, NFS3 ma lepszą grafikę, i ładniejszą kabinę kierowcy (właściwie to kokpity w Viperze są dosyć niedopracowane). Viper wygrywa jednak pod względem realizmu, oddziaływania praw fizyki, AI komputera, i ilości modyfikowalnych opcji (jest nawet zestaw malarski, dzięki któremu możesz pomalować swój samochód). Wydaje mi się jednak, że z Viper Racing, ciężką pracą można było wycisnąć jeszcze więcej.

If you can live with just having one kind of car to drive and are willing to put a little time into learning the mostly accurate physics model powering the game, Viper Racing offers a winning combination of pretty graphics, thrilling racing, and strong multi-player features.

This is simple. There are better games out there that are probably not as realistic. There are better games out there that are probably more realistic, but not very fun. This falls nicely in the middle of that road. If you always wanted to know what it feels like to take Dodge’s finest—at least since the K-Car—and take on some of the best driving AI I’ve witnessed, go get this. If having only one car and eight tracks turns you off… well, I won’t lie to you. You will probably not enjoy this game and become frustratingly bored in short order. Viper Racing isn’t about numbers. It is about doing one thing and doing that one thing better than most. It will remain on my hard drive at least until K-Car Racing fills its place.

Newcomer Monster Games came up with an interesting concept for Viper Racing: Create the type of ultrarealistic physics model found in games like Grand Prix Legends and use it to simulate racing a high-dollar production car. It might not sound that groundbreaking, but with the exception of 1993's Car and Driver, it's probably the only game featuring a car like the Dodge Viper that isn't 95 percent arcade action and 5 percent realistic racing.

Het spel heeft zeker en vast datgene wat nodig is om boven het gemiddelde uit te steken. Toch spijtig dat de eerste indruk van het spel zo mat is: wat troosteloze circuits en slechts één type wagen. Viper Racing is een spel waarmee je jezelf heel lang kan amuseren. En dat is een zeldzaamheid bij dit type racers.

Viper Racing moet volgens Sierra geschikt zijn voor zowel de sim- als arcade racefans. Maar naar mijn mening is VR gewoon een moddervette arcade game en een matige sim.

För de av er som aldrig har utforskat den mer realistiska sidan av racingspel kanske Viper Racing verkar skrämmande, men i själva verket utgör det en bro mellan de mer ytliga spelen och de tuffa simulatorerna och därför är det en perfekt introduktion. Det må vara oansenligt och lite knepigt att handskas med, men det är min flickvän också. Och jag älskar henne likväl.

Overall, Viper Racing is a good racing simulator that presents a great graphics engine, a great physics engine, good sounds, and really fun racing. The ability to drive just about anywhere is a lot of fun and very refreshing because most games just confine you to the track. The rest of the benefits from the awesome 3D world is the great damage detail and the awesome physics, both of which will make you feel like you are almost driving a Viper. The bottom line is that game is recommended for anyone that even remotely likes racing games, or even Vipers for that matter.

While initial races may leave you somewhat unimpressed, digging into Viper Racing unearths a surprisingly deep game. In many respects, it's more purely entertaining than either Need for Speed III or Grand Prix Legends—while it lacks the flash of the former and the seriousness of the latter, it compensates by delivering superbly-balanced racing experience.

In the end, serious sim freaks are probably going to like Viper Racing a great deal. It has just about everything they usually expect to get in their diet of axle grease, and even gives them a few new environments to get their fix in. For the rest of us, the main attraction will be the effect of the wheelie button. But, two questions remain: 1) Why does a cactus have the structural integrity to compact the front of a Viper in a collision? 2) For god's sake, why in the hell does the opening movie use audio quotes from the beginning of Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home?!

Ganz schön mutig von Sierra, ein ganzes Spiel um nur ein einziges Fahrzeug zu stricken. Doch beim Test mußte ich überrascht feststellen, daß sich die vielen Varianten der Viper weit unterschiedlicher fahren, als ein 911er und ein Z3 bei vielen Konkurrenten. Genau das war es auch, was mich im Liga-Modus immer wieder angefeuert hat. Ich mußte unbedingt den Spoiler-Kit haben, die Rennreifen, die verstellbaren Stoßdämpfer. So hangelte ich mich von Upgrade zu Upgrade, immer auf der Jagd nach der Ideallinie, bis ich schließlich auch die Oberliga gewann und feststellte: Spaßig war’s. Doch vor allem die unspektakuläre Grafik, der schwache Sound und die dröge Präsentation sind schuld, daß Viper Racing der Weg in den Rennspiel-Olymp verwehrt bleibt. Fürs vordere Mittelfeld reicht’s aber locker.

Entwickler MGI beschreitet einen Mittelweg, indem er sowohl ein Arcade-Spiel als auch eine Rennsimulation anbieten will. Für einen Fun-Racer sieht aber die Grafik zu schlecht aus, und der Realismus-Aspekt könnte deutlicher sein. Auf der Haben-Seite steht die sehr schön gelungene Fahrphysik, bei der sich Setup-Änderungen am Auto wie etwa die Härte der Stoßdämpfer tatsächlich bemerkbar machen. Auch die Strecken an sich machen Spaß, außerdem dürfen Sie in der Umgebung ebenfalls umherflitzen und beschränken sich nicht auf einem Raum von fünf Metern links und rechts der Fahrbahn. So können Sie beispielsweise in einen See fallen. Allerdings sollte drumherum mehr passieren, die Kurse wirken steril. Dazu ist ein Rennauto auf Dauer eigentlich etwas öde, aber für den geringen Preis von 60 Mark ein faires Angebot.

The long-term appeal of the game is its only (small) flaw. Though Viper Racing has a "Season" option in which you can play through a racing career, the provision of only one basic vehicle type and six tracks may leave some players itching to try another racing sim in a couple of month's time. But try it yourself first -- as you look up the vast expanse of track, with smoke rising realistically from your bonnet, you can't help but love this game.
