Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate

Overall, the game is superb. A more detailed strategic wrapper would be nice, as would more variety in the missions (you do a lot of attacking, and very little defending, for instance). One can only hope that the game does well enough for SSI to countenance an expansion pack. It would be wonderful to play the Chaos side in a campaign, for instance, or to tackle Space Orks or command other chapters of Space Marines. All in all, though, Chaos Gate delivers on its promise. It's the best thing SSI has published in quite a while, and vaults them right back into the stratosphere of quality game publishers. The Emperor would be proud.

Ondanks het turnbased karakter en isometrische kaart is Chaos Gate geen achterhaalde shit. 'Uitermate verslavend', 'trouw aan de Warhammer-stijl' en 'spannend' zijn beschrijvingen die uitstekend bij dit spel passen.

Random Games har visat oss innebörden av ordspråket "tredje gången gillt". Deras två senaste spel, Wages of War och Soldiers At War, har båda varit halvbra produkter. Det sistnämnda var bra, men det fanns ordentligt med orosmoln i spelet. Vem minns inte gränssnittet som blockerade större delen av spelytan? Chaos Gate är ett genomgående bra spel, med den rätta känslan. Turordningsbaserad strategi när den är som bäst. Mycket lyckat spel.

An excellent turn based strategy game. The graphics and environment are varied, interesting, and colorful. While Final Liberation appealed more to Warhammer 40,000 fans, Chaos Gate should have a wider appeal due to the interesting units and equipment. Make sure you have access to the patch before attempting to play.

There's very little to actually complain about in Chaos Gate. The graphics aren't quite as sharp as some other current strategy games, and the voice acting sounds as though it was recorded through a tin can, but these really don't affect the core fun factor of the game. A few more missions, the ability to place your units during a unit placement phase, and the chance to play as Chaos are the only things you could really ask for. Warhammer is a complex, vastly entertaining strategy gaming system, and Chaos Gate does full justice to it.

Chaos Gate bietet Spannung zuhauf; das düstere Flair der Vorlage kommt ebenfalls gut rüber. In puncto Technik schlagen jedoch einige Minuspunkte zu Buche: Die 256-Farben-Grafik wirkt ziemlich eintönig, die Musik wiederholt sich zu schnell und die Mausabfrage reagiert etwas ungenau.Taktik- und Warhammer 40K-Fans sollten zugreifen – spannende Abende sind garantiert.

Other games are chock full of boring, bland, undifferentiated sci fi names. A hover tank is called, brilliantly enough, a hover tank; a laser is just a laser. Not in Warhammer 40,000: a heavy tank becomes an Imperial Dreadnaught, draped with the banners of the Emperor and drawn in a style that lets you know it is ready roll over the ranks of the enemy and crush their bones beneath its treads.

Bereits vor Jahren sah man bei X-Com Animationen, die denen von Chaos Gate zumindest ebenbürtig waren. Dazu kommt, daß vor jeder der (gottlob abschaltbaren) Animationen eine nervige Nachladezeit auftritt. Zu guter Letzt ein Satz zur Bedienung: Die will wohl mit ihren mikroskopisch kleinen Steuericons den Spieler an seinen nächsten Augenarzt-Termin erinnern. Schade also, daß der Funke nicht recht überspringen mag, denn so werden die durchaus vorhandenen inneren Werte von Chaos Gate verschenkt.

This game is pretty much like all the other turn-based tactical games since X-Com UFO Defense. It's fun, but it doesn't keep you coming back for more day after day. Playing against another person can be fun just for the strategic element, but again, not something compelling that you would play over and over again. It's too bad that turn-based tactical games have never risen above X-Com. I love the genre, but long for the day to come when I can be proud of it. If you are a turn-based tactical game lover, get this game when it hits the bargain bin.
