Team 17 have worked tirelessly on the Worms series for the best part of a decade, and arguably, their games peaked with Worms Armageddon on the PC and Playstation a while back. The transition into 3D games came with Worms 3D, which met mixed reviews from critics and fans. Some disagree with the change of style, but there are few successful 2D games nowadays, and none which have had six or seven previous games in their series. With this, the third title in the 3D lineup, have Team 17 and Codemasters finally achieved the fun and extremely playable game we saw with the 2D titles?

In previous versions of Worms in its 3D era, there had been some worm control and camera problems. The team worked on this and the worms are now easier than ever to control - they will glide up small steps etc by themselves, where previously you had to jump, and with the new camera, you'll never miss the action as it always sure you can see your target. If you're a fan of Worms and enjoyed the games so far, this is a must-have. In fact, even if you didn't enjoy Worms Forts, then this game is still a must-have to get you back in on the Worms action! I loved it!

After the somewhat disappointing Worms: Forts Under Siege in 2004, Team17 has resurrected the classic gameplay of Worms 3D for their latest invertebrate combat franchise. Offering a wide selection of gametypes from Story Mode and Quick Matches to online play on PC and Xbox Live, together with the new Weapons Factory and Create Game Style options, the Worms appear to be back on top form.
The highly popular Worms series is nearing its tenth anniversary, and despite the "4" in the title, this is actually the ninth to arrive on PC (including the puzzle-based Worms Blast and Worms Pinball). While Worms was originally a 2D game, from Worms 3D the series has gone, well, 3D. The move has been controversial for some - the 3D was difficult to navigate and while ultimately it was still fun, some said the fun had been lost from the game. The follow-up Worms Forts Under Siege didn't fare too well due to its departure from the classic gameplay style, so how will the true sequel, Worms 4: Mayhem fare?

After several strange variations of the Worms series it finally returns to the roots of its gameplay with Worms 4: Mayhem, sort of. As many of you might already know if you've played Worms 3D or any of the 2D Worms games of the past, the point of the game is to strategically position your of cute cartoon worms and annihilate the enemy team through the use of over-the-top weaponry. Eliminating your foes can occur by directly damaging them with weapons, knocking them into bodies of water, or triggering some of the environmental pitfalls like land mines and poisonous barrels.

It’s the same gameplay as ever – simple fun, with a little brainpower needed to work out the angle and power of each shot. Unfortunately, it isn’t exactly earthshatteringly different from the previous 3D version so, as with all the others, the real fun is when you’re playing your mates. And we don’t mean online (though you have that option) – we mean sharing the same monitor and gloating like hell when your ’nade powers your opponent into the water. We dare you not to gloat.
Worms 4 is a solid return to form for the series that offers plenty to do for the lone gamer as well as anyone looking for multiplayer fun. The new weapons and weapon building are nice touches, but there are still a few niggles that prevent Worms 4: Mayhem from reaching the dizzy heights of the 2D era. It's a step in the right direction and a good sign for things to come in the series and worms fans should find plenty to enjoy.
Worms 4 works great in multiplayer if you've a group of friends who have some skill with the game to make the basic weapons work well; otherwise there is an entertaining single player mode. Worms 4 Mayhem is not a great game, but it is a good, and one perhaps you should try before buying.
Worms 4: Mayhem is the third Worms game in two years, which is a lot of worms. But more importantly, it's hard to believe there's such a rampant demand for these games, considering they really never change or improve over time. Aside from the requisite transition to 3D, the Worms series hasn't changed much since it first appeared on the PC in 1995. Each new installment may tweak the weapon lineup ever so slightly, but these worms tend to stick to their guns. That's both a good and a bad thing for Worms 4: Mayhem.

We reckon the answer's quite simple: everyone keeps claiming that this is just Worms in 3D. It isn't. Worms 4: Mayhem is the same kind of Worms game as Worms 3D with a few new bits and pieces, including some weapon and game-type customisation and an extended mini-game-based "Challenge mode, but, if you ask us, Worms 3D had already abandoned a lot of what people liked about Worms in the first place.
