DescriptionWrack is a cel shaded first-person shooter with gameplay much like the original DOOM. The game is set in the year 2050 and world peace has been achieved. In 2037 the company Osteron Research developed a Dark Matter Reactor that can create matter out of pure energy, providing an infinite supply of food and resources, ending war and poverty. The protagonist is Kain. Earth is attacked by aliens (known as Arcturans) who are after the reactor. Assisted by his friends Fabian and Starlyn who keep in touch through radio communication, he immediately sets out to defeat the aliens.
There are seven levels in the game (one of them is a secret) that are grouped together as the first episode. Kain simply has to defeat all enemies and reach the exit. He can use five weapons: a melee hyperblade, a pistol, a shotgun, a pulsar (machine gun) and a bazooka. Except for the hyperblade they all have a limited amount of ammo. Additional items are an armour bonus and several types of armour, various treasures for additional points, three types of temporary power-ups (doomsphere, guardsphere and turbosphere) and three types of permanent upgrades (blast guard, max armour and max health). There are five difficulty levels. Levels are split up in checkpoints and Kain has multiple lives. When he runs out of lives, the entire level has to be restarted. Additional lives can be earned by scoring a certain amount of points.
The game encourages fast gameplay through a combo system. If a number of enemies are killed quickly in succession a combo bar builds up and it depletes when no more kills are performed. The bar is split up in four levels and at any moment, before losing the momentum, the bar can be converted into a powerful kill chain finisher based on one of the four levels to kill multiple enemies with a lot of damage. Enemies include different types of Arcturan aliens, spider-like Crawlers, Mechs and different bosses.
Next to the main game mode there is a time attack and a score attack mode. Various pieces of concept art are unlocked while playing and can be viewed in the gallery. The game includes a level editor and through Steam Workshop support players can design and share new levels and mods.
