Shooting, shooting, and more shooting. There’s no denying that this game gets repetitive after awhile, but can you think of an arcade game that doesn’t? The levels are short and there are lots of them (about 40 total, not counting bonus levels), the weapons are varied as are the aliens, the locales are well-drawn and fun, and the screen is almost continually packed with stuff dying. What more could you want in escapist arcade entertainment?

Enforcer is a perfect example of a decent console game on the PC. It requires very little from you in terms of investment and, while the game does have its sophisticated side, it's pretty much nonstop action. There are a few games on my hard drive that are perfect for when I've only got fifteen minutes to kill and X-COM Enforcer is right at the top of the list (Airfix Dogfighter and Risk II being the other main contenders).

The short of it, X-COM Enforcer is a great fast-paced action (but repetitive) game that pays homage to a number of arcade games and will probably show up on the console side of the industry. Diehard X-COM fans might be shaking their heads wondering what went wrong, but for the action buffs, X-COM Enforcer is a good diversion from doing productive things.

What are we left with in conclusion? A disappointment the answer, for those who may have hoped this marked a new milestone in the X-Com series, and ‘nothing special’, for those who are fans of the selected genre. Good value, none the less, but a shadow of the series’ former brilliance.

X-COM Enforcer ist sicher kein Spiel mit besonderem Anspruch an den Spieler. Man läuft halt so durch die Gegend und ballert was das Zeug hält. Ab und an wird man durch Bonus-Level oder andere Abwechslungen angenehm überrascht. Es bietet sich damit hervorragend als Spiel für das Stündchen zwischendurch. Dieser Effekt erklärt sich auch dadurch, dass der aktuelle Spielstand wenig mit dem bisherigen Verlauf zu tun hat. So kann sich der geneigte Spieler einfach hinsetzten und losballern, ohne viel nachzudenken. Und für engagiertere Spieler bietet sich der Multiplayermodus.

It's the simple things in life that I enjoy, and X-COM: ENFORCER happens to be one of them. It's nothing fancy or groundbreaking, but what it is, is a fun diversion from the rest of it. Although it's not a perfect game by any means (I don't think we've found one yet), it's old-skool fun at its best. Lock and load baby -- it's time to save humanity one more time.

Taktische Intelligenz und clever agierende Gegner können Sie sich hier abschminken. Aber als entspannendes »Zwischendurch und möglichst hirnlos«-Spiel ist X-COM Enforcer gelungen. Bis auf wenige eklige Stellen metzelt man sich problemlos durch die ebenso kurzen wie kurzweiligen Levels. Extrawaffen und Power-ups geben der Dauerballerei einen belebenden Arcade-Anstrich. Grafik samt hektischer Soundkulisse passen zur etwas kruden B-Movie-Atmosphäre. Die gewaltigen Gegnermassen haben auch ihre Nachteile: Selbst auf gehobenen PC-Systemen kommt die Framerate manchmal ins Stottern. Hier kommt’s halt weniger auf Präzision an, entscheidend ist die Waffen-Omnipotenz.

Dieses Spiel verwendet die Unreal Tournament-Engine und hat dadurch grafisch recht gute Vorraussetzungen. An manchen Stellen wirkt das Spiel leider doch etwas optisch veraltet. Enforcer ist in absoluter Arcade-Baller-Manier gehalten und bietet vom Bonus einsammeln bis hin zum Combo-Treffer alles was ein gutes Ballerspiel braucht. Witzige Kommentare tragen ebenfalls zum Spielspaß bei. Viel Tiefgang oder X-COM Feeling braucht man sich allerdings nicht erwarten, dass ist aber auch sicher kein Ziel des Spieles gewesen, es geht einfach um einen netten Zeitvertreib nach alten Arcaderegeln. Gelungener kurzweiliger Ballerspaß für Zwischendurch!

X-Com Enforcer is an okay game that truly is a waste of the X-Com franchise. Even Email X-Com was closer to the roots of the original groundbreaking game. If you can get past the ease of the game (I finished all three levels of difficulty in one week of part time play - maybe 20 hours all told), and the problems I mentioned above, then you may just enjoy yourself for a few hours - but I can’t imagine playing the missions over again.

Für Epileptiker ist das nix: Da blitzt es an allen Ecken und Enden bildschirmfüllend in sämtlichen Regenbogenfarben. Selbst gestählten Action-Helden wie mir (wer hat gelacht?) treibt es da gelegentlich die Tränen in die Augen - von der Hornhaut auf meinem Klickfinger ganz zu schweigen. Vielleicht kommen diese Ermüdungserscheinen aber auch von der mehrstündigen Dauersession, die ich eingelegt habe: Weil nach jeder Mission neue Waffen und Gegenstände motivieren, fesselt X-COM: Enforcer bis zum Ende ununterbrochen. Und das kommt leider viel zu schnell. Nach gut sieben Stunden und etlichen tausend gerösteten Aliens ist der simple Spaß auch für Einsteiger vorbei. Da ist es schade, dass der ’Ich will die neue Wumme ausprobieren’-Effekt im Mehrspielermodus ausbleibt und selbiger somit nicht wirklich zum Weiterspielen einlädt.

for some reason I had to choose between X-COM: Enforcer and Serious Sam, and I only had money to buy one of them, I'd opt for the latter one. X-COM: Enforcer can be fun at times simply because of its "high octane arcade quantity" (I think those of you who read the review know what I'm talking about), but some of its weaknesses are just too evident to overlook when deciding the final score.
The developers would have indeed been smarter to leave the name "X-COM" out of the title, as true fans of the series will shun this latest release. However, I think X-COM Enforcer really succeeds in its objectives quite well, as it is a derivative retro arcade blastfest which makes absolutely no claims to breakthrough innovation. While a deep textured plot and character development are missing, the nonstop intense action more than compensates for these omissions. The inclusion of the research-and-development feature really does add a lot to the gameplay, and the title looks and sounds great. Despite a few small design quirks, this is one release I found I just could not stop playing from the moment it was installed on my hard drive. I heartily recommend it to all of you who want an adrenaline rush of the highest order.

There've been other unsuccessful X-COM offshoots, including the space combat simulation X-COM: Interceptor and the simplistic play-by-email game X-COM: First Alien Invasion. But X-COM: Enforcer is the biggest departure from the core series to date. It's as mindless of a shooter as they come, and you can't help but be disappointed at the thought of this, in light of the series' roots as a mentally stimulating strategy game. That's not to say a mindless shooter is a bad thing. X-COM: Enforcer can certainly be fun, and it can be addictive in a manner that's at least slightly reminiscent of how X-COM: UFO Defense was. Of course you'll be done with Enforcer in a fraction of the time you could spend with the 1993 game. In the end, it's much more difficult to try to understand why X-COM: Enforcer was billed as such than it is to actually play all the way through it.

Bref, sans être un grand jeu, X-Com : Enforcer est un défouloir sympathique avec des armes jouissives mais qui devient rapidement lassant. Le fun du début laisse rapidement place à la lassitude qui ne manque pas de s'installer face à un gameplay qui ne se renouvelle que très peu pour laisser place à une boucherie en continu sans réelle subtilité.

X-Com Enforcer is a 3rd-person arcade shooter that puts you against a horde of extraterrestrial forces, fortunately with poor AI :) Don't expect much of a story, rather move forward, kill enemies and repeat until done. While cleansing the levels of the alien menace, players will scrounge around for new technologies and hidden letters to unlock bonus minigames. The game features over 35 missions of nonstop shooting, experience the power of the Unreal Tournament engine, over 20 alien species, various weapons and an abilities to research and upgrade weapons and power-ups to increase your firepower.

X-COM Enforcer is simply average. Microprose has combined a familiar franchise name with a powerful 3D engine and the results are just not that impressive. This game is more suited toward a console or arcade box than the PC. Enforcer is being offered at a $29 retail price which slightly offsets the shallow gameplay, but if you are looking for a mindless shooter then Serious Sam is a better game and half the price. Enforcer is great if you are looking for a game you can pop in and lose yourself for 20-30 minutes with some mindless action, but with no driving storyline, puzzles, or innovative gameplay, there is simply nothing here that hasn't been done before and done better.

X-Com Enforcer jako kolejny TPP będzie odbierany raczej dobrze. Nie wiem natomiast dlaczego gra ta posiada logo X-Com albowiem zupełnie nie zasługuje na powiązania z tak szczytną sagą. Jest to produkcja zbyt dziecinna i naiwna. Być może producentom chodziło o wysoką i łatwą sprzedaż Enforcera w dobie oczekiwań na X-Com Alliance. Mam jednak nadzieję, że po przeczytaniu tej recenzji i obejrzeniu screenów sami zadecydujecie czy warto ją kupować. Jak dla mnie jest to produkcja skierowana przede wszystkim do osób rozpoczynających swoją przygodę w tym gatunku, ewentualnie dla tych, którzy poszukują bez stresowej rozgrywki nie zważając na takie detale jak brak fabuły czy też monotonne misje.
Ultimately, ENFORCER falls short on all counts. It’s certainly not the X-COM we wanted, but even forgiving that, it’s not a great action game either. It needs more variety and better pacing, and it needs to be more challenging. Let’s hope Infogrames has more ambitious plans for the X-COM license in the future.

Enforcer has got to be the worst use of the Unreal engine that I have ever seen. The framerates are solid, but textures are not very detailed or vibrant and everything has this weird green tint to it. I guess it's an alien thing. I just wouldn't understand. This might be a decent console effort, but we expect more from PC games in the 21 century.
