Xpand Rally

At the end of 2004 we saw the release of Xpand Rally from Techland, a very solid rally game that was only for the lucky European market. Finally, the US market is seeing this great rally game come to the shelves. The US version saw a few upgrades since the EU launch. These upgrades include better graphics, better voice over work, tweaked gameplay, fixed flaws, and a variety of improvements across the board.

What do you think of when you see a brand new game come out at twenty bucks? I used to think that it probably wasn’t worth my time, but I have seen examples in the past that have proven me wrong, that a budget price game can deliver anything but a budget level experience. So, that brings me to Xpand Rally, coming out at the gates at a budget level price, does that mean that the game is one of those cases where you get what you pay for? Or is it a diamond that someone put the wrong price tag on?

Ich brauch keine großen Namen und reale Fahrzeughersteller. Ich hab sowieso keinen Führerschein. Bei einem Rennspiel sind doch in erster Linie Fahrgefühl und Spielumfang wichtig und da kann Xpand Rally genauso dick punkten wie ich bei den Weibern. Und das soll schon was heißen! (Anm. d. Chefred.: Der Satz ist irreführend. Das würde nämlich bedeuten, dass dieses Spiel gar nicht punktet, Specki!)

Colin McRae-Fans frohlocken: Erstmals erscheint die PC-Version zeitgleich mit der Konsolenfassung. Und kriegt es gleich mit der Rennspiel-Premiere des polnischen Entwicklerstudios Techland zu tun: Xpand Rally. Der Genre-Primus setzt neben den bekannten Einzelrennen auf einen neuen und motivierenden Karriere-Modus mit 23 Rallyes und über 300 Wertungsprüfungen.

A law-free respite for many amateur racers is the videogame, and developer Techland is offering up a new package for Rally racing fans – Xpand Rally. A significant amount of what you’ll think of this game will depend on your opinion of Rally racing, so far from the NASCAR heart of most North American race fans. Yes, you’ll be racing against the clock rather than other racers, but the only thing this concept precludes is smashing into the other cars. Since we’re not looking at a destruction derby game one can hardly complain. But will rally racing sell to the North American populace? Thanks in part to big names like Colin McRae, rally racing is certainly increasing in popularity. It’s up to the gamer as to if it’s their bag or not.

Frankly speaking, Xpand Rally is quite a treat for the price tag TopWare has set for it. The game features two racing options, arcade and simulation, across a wide variety of tracks and cars in single-player and multiplayer modes. Replays are stunning with all the cameras and visual effects and the game comes with a built-in track editor which lets you import, modify and create tracks. What more do you want?!?!?

If you eliminated the massive packs of cars, the frantic wheel-to-wheel action, and the bumper-to-bumper drafting from PC racing, you'd eliminate most of the fun, right? Right? Wrong. Like Colin McRae Rally and Rallisport Challenge before it, TopWare's Xpand Rally proves that automotive competition doesn't necessarily need a whole gaggle of cars to be both exciting and ridiculously compelling. Granted, you'll need to get comfortable with the off-road, beat-the-clock rallying school of racing to fully appreciate the game. But if you're a serious fan of the art of driving, chances are Xpand Rally's strong mix of sophisticated physics, hyper-realistic graphics, and torturous courses will get you as comfy as you ever need to be.

Comment faire du neuf avec du vieux ? Demandez donc aux gars de Techland, ils vous répondront sans doute : « en recyclant ». Car s’il sent bien entendu le neuf, Xpand Rally est aussi fait avec du vieux. Le moteur 3D de Chrome, un FPS futuriste, est ici retravaillé pour intégrer non plus des francs-tireurs et des armes à feu mais bien des pistes sauvages et des bolides. Le tout mâtiné d’un outil de gestion dynamique particulièrement poussé. Dans Xpand Rally, il y a Rally. Et ce n’est pas une publicité mensongère. Il s’agira donc bien de piloter une voiture WRC ou d’une catégorie inférieure sur les pistes du monde entier, chemins de traverse poussiéreux, routes enneigées et autres randonnées sylvestres, qu’il vente, qu’il pleuve ou que le soleil fasse éclater les gommes.

Xpand Rally tut mir ein bisschen leid: Die Grafik ist hübsch, die Zahl der Wettbewerbe hoch und der Wagenpark schön in Szene gesetzt. Nur: Wer braucht noch ein Rennspiel ohne Besonderheit? Okay, das Fahrzeug-Tunen macht eine Weile Spaß. Mankos wie die geringen Unterschiede der Fahrbahnbeläge und die schwammige Arcade-Steuerung ziehen Techlands Raserei aber in die Bedeutungslosigkeit.

Très complet et visuellement impeccable, Xpand Rally a tout pour plaire pour peu qu'on ne soit pas un mordu de simulation. Si c'est le cas, optez plutôt pour Richard Burns Rally.

Malgré ses dires Xpand Rally ne sera pas la révélation attendue, ne bénéficiant pas du souci du détail présent dans d'autres productions disposant évidemment de plus de moyens. Cependant ce n'est pas une raison pour se détourner d'un soft, qui s'il comporte des défauts certains, affiche toutefois des points positifs non négligeables qui vous feront passer des moments de réel plaisir. Loin d'être une Subaru WRC, mais se battant férocement en tant que Saxo Kit Car de luxe.
