Much is written by myself and others about computer games' originality, challenge, and ability to morph genres and transport gamers to new heights of gaming genredom. That's great stuff. But what happens when a game does none of that, yet still you can't jerk yourself from the screen? What do you call a game that is not particularly original, challenging, or creative, but is just damn fun? I call it Zax: Alien Hunter.

More of an alien fortune hunter than alien hunter, Zax is on a quest with the simple, appreciable goal of becoming really damn rich. He don't care about politics, or people, he's in it for the money, the moola, or in his case, the ore. He believes some of this rare and cherished ore to be located on an assumedly uninhabited planet, so he makes his approach to land, only to be suddenly shot down. Too bad what was first thought to be an uninhabited world turns out to be a planet comprised of the peaceful Korbos (goober aliens) and jerky, murderous biomechanical beasts led by the tyrannical Om. With the aid of his ship's sexy onboard artificial intelligence, Zelon, Zax is on a mission to find all the ore he needs to get the heck out of there while making a tidy profit, and maybe saving the whole place, if he's got the time.

The shadow of Diablo looms large over the gaming landscape. Thanks to the phenomenal success of Blizzard's action-RPG franchise, more than a few games have borne its influence. Nox, Revenant, Darkstone, and Throne of Darkness, to name a few, seem to have borrowed from Diablo's isometric action-gaming formula, with its hordes of enemies and hypnotic mouse-clicking. Zax: The Alien Hunter, an action-adventure game from the aptly named Reflexive Entertainment, isn't shy about its influences. The developer trumpets Zax as a combination of Diablo and id's Quake, though Zax has little in common with the latter besides lots of shooting. Zax takes the basic action-packed gameplay of Diablo, puts it in a science-fiction setting, and comes up with a derivative but entertaining game.

Zax-The Alien Hunter is an excellent action/adventure game that looks more like a classic shoot 'em up, plain and simple - kinda like Diablo. The game features nonstop action, tricks traps and puzzles that cover 22 missions, 100+ maps, 7 different environment types and frequent weapon upgrades throughout your adventure. Don't be afraid you will bored, there are hundreds and hundreds of robots to decimate, the maps are richly detailed and the characters well constructed and well portrayed. Although the gameplay is pretty simple, this game is damn addictive - once you start it you won't want to stop :P

Na het spelen van Zax: The Alien Hunter kan ik maar tot één conclusie komen: Zax is cool. Geen 3D toestanden, geen gigabytes DDR Ram nodig, gewoon een pentiumpje 233 met 32 Mb en het spel draait. Welke titel doet dat nou nog tegenwoordig? En dan krijg je ook nog een interessante verhaallijn, grappige uitspraken van Zax zelf en plenty actie voor de kiezen. Om Zax te citeren: 'If you can't stand the heat, get out of my kitchen!'

Question maniabilité, c'est pas la joie. Alors que le tandem souris/clavier fait des merveilles pour tout ce qui est FPS, il est particulièrement mal adapté pour Zax car on s'emmêle rapidement les pinceaux dans les déplacements au clavier. Même au pad, c'est très laborieux, voire injouable en raison de l'impossibilité de configurer correctement les touches de direction. Dommage car le reste du jeu est plutôt sympathique, Zax, toujours attiré par l'argent, possède un caractère attachant et la réalisation, plus qu'honnête, fait la part belle aux effets spéciaux.

Zax jagt Außerirdische und ist selber einer: Wo Menschen eine Nase haben, trägt Zax einen enormen Zinken. Er ist ein ungewöhnlicher, aber sympathischer Held, der Macho-Sprüche klopft, wenn er mit seiner Plasmakanone hantiert. Letzteres passiert, als Zax auf einem fremden Planeten notlandet, wo ihm mutierte Pferdegesichter und Roboter an die Gurgel wollen.

Meine Brille ist nicht kaputt, die Grafikkarte auch nicht. Also, warum flimmert die Hauptfigur so seltsam? Ausgerechnet die Heldenfigur flackert bei jedem Schritt wie ein kaputter Fernseher – auf Dauer quält das die Netzhaut ganz schön. Und dabei würde ich eigentlich gerne längere Zeit spielen. Die Handlung ist in spannende Häppchen unterteilt, es passiert immer wieder mal was Überraschendes. Sogar die Grafikeffekte wären schon Grund genug, noch bis zur nächsten Waffe weiterzumachen. Die Entwickler haben sich zwar kaum ganz Neues einfallen lassen, aber alle gängigen Spieldesign-Tricks eingebaut.

Zax is het ideale spel voor de beginnende en jeugdige gamers onder u. De anderen kunnen dit spel beter links laten liggen.

After crash landing on an alien world, Zax (read: you) must collect enough ore and crystals so the ship can repair itself and he can be on his way. Unfortunately, you land in the middle of a tricky situation - the indigenous species, Zorbos, are being enslaved by the malicious entity known as Om. The Zorbo look to Zax as a savior of sorts, and he just can’t bear to let them down - plus it’s the only way he can collect enough ore and crystals to leave the planet. It’s a tried and true formula and, frankly, it gets old real fast.

Zax är fräscht de första timmarna, men sedan försvinner nostalgikänslan och då återstår bara ett enformigt arkadspel. Visserligen finns det stöd för deathmatch och liknande spelalternativ i multiplay, men bristerna från de vanliga uppdragen är alldeles för stora. Det är den här typen av spel som ofta dyker upp i form av shareware, men om du hungrar efter ett arkadspel är kanske detta något för dig.
