Gamers' Temple, The
If you're on the other side of the fence, the side that did not enjoy Zeus all that much, then you will probably want to pass on Poseidon. It does not change the game significantly enough that it is likely to sway your opinion.

Last year's Zeus: Master of Olympus was the best game to date in Impressions' city-building series, as it improved on the ideas of the Roman-themed Caesar games and their Egyptian counterpart, Pharaoh, while adding new tasks and mechanics that made the game's formula more complex and enjoyable. Poseidon, the official expansion for Zeus, doesn't include many new features, but it does include some significant ones. The game is set in Atlantis, and the fantastical setting has allowed the designers to take more creative license with the mission design. The result is as enjoyable as Zeus and suggests that Impressions' city-building series will just keep getting better.

So the original Zeus got a 9.5 in Lasting Appeal and it deserved it. Eight months later, it's still a game that I fire up from time to time. For a jaded member of Generation X who does nothing except play every single game that ever comes out, the fact that I'd still be playing a game eight months after its release is a big deal. So how in the world could Impressions improve on it? Simple, they couldn't. But what they could do is offer a host of new missions set within the same universe with enough tweaks and changes to make it seem new.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to expansion packs. First, there are those expansions that consistently add new features and gameplay modes while maintaining all the qualities that made the parent game such a success. And then there are expansions that simply offer more of the same with only some minor changes thrown into the mix. Zeus' official expansion, Poseidon, is definitely positioned in the latter camp. It offers the same great gameplay that Zeus provided, but with a couple exceptions -- it doesn't offer anything new.

Mit Poseidon liefert Impressions
ein Addon nach meinem
Geschmack. Die 45
Missionen – so viele wie im
Hauptprogramm – spielen
sich extrem kurzweilig, weil ständig neue Herausforderungen
auftauchen. Im Gegensatz zur
Mission-CD von
Siedler 4 gibt’s auch neue Rohstoffe,
Gebäude und Einheiten. Besonders gut
gefallen mir die stattlichen Monumente, die
meine Bürger aus dem exotischen Orichalc
bauen. Der einzige Wermutstropfen ist die
inzwischen wahrhaft antike Grafik, die seit
Caesar

Poseidon is much more about prettying the game up than it is about changing gameplay or adding new features, but when it comes down to it, aren't all city-building games really just about constructing a beautiful city and watching the populace thrive in it? This budget add-on, coming in at just under $20, is well worth the loot if you're into city builders or have grown tired of watching your Greeks amble about their land-locked Italian province. Poseidon adds enough eye-candy to the mega-hit Zeus to recapture your attention and perhaps rekindle your love for everything old and Greek.
