A complete surprise, this. World Cup '94 has come from nowhere and dazzled us with its brilliance. It's utterly playable, and a footy fans dream. There may be plenty of competition out there in footy genre, but this is up there with the best from any machine.

Of the recent slew of soccer games released to coincide with the World Cup, this one is tops. Not only does it feature the 24 teams that qualified for Cup play, you can actually hear the crowd singing. The real kicker: You can customize the action so that it's easier for little kids to run, shoot, and score.

By no means a bad game - it's all there, and you can set it up just how you want, but should have more solid gameplay and real international players names.

Zur guten Spielbarkeit und den nützlichen Optionen gesellen sich atmosphärische Soundeffekte sowie hübsche Grafik mit sauberem Scrolling und sehr gut animierten Sprites. Leider kommen die feinen Animationsphasen durch die Vogelperspektive nicht gar so gut zur Geltung wie bei „FIFA International Soccer“. Dafür spielt sich World Cup USA 94 aber deutlich besser und kämpft somit ganz sicher um den Titel der Fußball-Simulations-Weltmeisterschaft. Wer noch kein Game rund um den Ball und 22 Kicker sein eigen nennt, darf hier getrost zuschlagen. Im Abseits steht man mit U.S. Golds Game ganz sicher nicht...

Alle Achtung, aber so ein feines Fußballspiel haben wir von U.S. Gold, die in letzter Zeit kaum Garant für geniale Spiele waren, nicht erwartet: World Cup USA 94 ist ein durchgestyltes Soccer mit lobenswert vielen Optionen, einer witzigen Menüsteuerung und einem Action-Part, der sich gewaschen hat. Übersichtlichkeit ist hier alles und so lassen sich dank des großen Spielfeldausschnitts und der eingeblendeten Übersicht tolle Kombinationen spielen. Flanken in den Strafraum und deren Verwandlung sind mit der einfache Kopfball- und Fallrückziehersteuerung ein Kinderspiel. Grafisch ist allein das Menüsystem anregend. Auf dem Spielfeld bekommen wir leider nur mittelmäßige Sprites zu sehen, die kleinen Zwischenbilder sind dabei noch um einiges schrecklicher anzuschauen. Alles in allem trägt World Cup USA 94 den großen Namen zurecht – es ist zur diesjährigen Weltmeisterschaft bisher das beste Actionfußball für Euren PC.

World Cup USA '94 excels with a unique ''radar'' that lets a player find an open man on the wing without scrolling through the whole stadium. As the licensed product of the 1994 World Cup, it also features Striker, the Cup mascot, and lists the 24 tournament teams.

This is packed with options and tries to adapt itself to a variety of skill levels. The most important part of the game - the actual gameplay - unfortunately takes a back seat to bells and whistles.

If you love soccer strategy and don't mind the too-cute mascot and the cartoony graphics, you'll really run with the detailed options in World Cup USA '94. If you're not a soccer fan, though, the unrealistic graphics will probably trip you up.

Unterm Strich gefällt die Master System Version einen kleinen Tick besser als die reichlich mittelmäßige Game Gear Fassung, aber dies eigentlich nur, weil hier dank größerem Bildausschnitt die Übersicht einfach deutlich besser ist. Wer mit dem recht simplen Bolzfußball hier leben kann, der hat womöglich auch heute noch mit World Cup USA ´94 seinen Spaß - ein Muss für Master System Besitzer ist es aber auf gar keinen Fall.

Quelle idée que de vouloir adapter World Cup USA 94 sur Game Boy! Hein? je vous le demande! Tout le monde sait parfaitement que dès l'instant où il y a du mouvement sur l'écran de la portable Nintendo, il est très difficile de s'y retrouver! Alors, imaginez un peu le résultat quand les joueurs sont vus de dessus et qu'ils sont plus petits que Bomboy à la naissance!

Wenn (ja, wenn...) man das Spiel auf seiner Kiste zum Laufen gebracht hat, ist es gar nicht mal schlecht. Sobald man nach wenigen Stunden die kryptische Icon-Belegung dechiffriert hat, kann man mit einigen der Optionen sogar was anfangen. Das intelligente Paßsystem, bei dem der Ball automatisch auf den anvisierten Spieler zusteuert, erlaubt flotte, kombinationsfreudige Partien. Sowohl Spannung als auch Atmosphäre sind manierlich, aber nicht gigantisch - an FIFA Soccer kommt der sperrige WM-Nachzügler von U.S. Gold nicht heran.

Wer mit den genannten Mankos leben kann, der erhält mit U.S. Golds World Cup USA 94 ein recht ordentliches Spiel, das die Möglichkeit bietet, die Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft nach Original-Spielplan nachzuspielen. Wer jedoch ein wirklich gutes Garne rund um den Ball haben möchte, der sollte sich lieber ‚World Cup Striker‘ von Elite zulegen.

If you're a soccer strategist and you want to play around with subtle changes in the game, you'll appreciate World Cup's many options. Unfortunately, if you're looking for an intense game with unbelievable action, you'll have to look elsewhere.

Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear. The official footie game for the World Cup goes on sale well after Brazil have lifted the cup – and what on earth could have held it up? Anyway, the box arrives on my desk and I bung the disks into my trusty A1200. Guess how long it took before I got two teams out on to the field for a kickabout? Go on. Six minutes and 13 seconds. So I play this really average footie game and decide I want to replay the game, as you do when reviewing stuff. How long does it take to get the same two teams back out on the park? Well over four minutes, and no mistake, guvnor.

It is interesting to note that, although US Gold were pleased as punch about getting the official licence to the World Cup held in the United States a little earlier this year, they did not actually release the product for the Amiga until the event was well and truly over. Obviously, this only came about due to programming slippage, as often happens, but it is still quite amusing to see that one of the selling points of the game is that (as the flash across the box proclaims) it contains a free souvenir wallchart, in which you can fill in the results of the matches you finished watching a few months ago. Still, nobody buys a game purely on the strength of the name, so let us brush all that aside and take a look at the product itself.

In den letzten Wochen ging es in Amerikas Stadien und Arenen heiß her, und so manch einer hätte sich mit Sicherheit gewünscht, das hektische Treiben auf dem Spielfeld am heimischen Monitor nachahmen zu können.

Leider schafften es nur wenige Hersteller, ihre Produkte termingerecht auf den Markt zu bringen. Sogar das offizielle Spiel zur Fußballweltmeisterschaft ließ zwei Wochen auf sich warten und erschien längt überfällig zum Viertelfinale. Erst eine sündhaft teure Lizenz erwerben und dann auch noch mit gewaltiger Verspätung ausliefern? Das kann doch wohl nicht Sinn dieser Investition gewesen sein, oder?

Of course, it all began in 1986. US Gold had the licence for the World Cup, and promised a game that would trounce everything previously seen in the history of the world. When World Cup Carnival turned up, the large box was US Gold’s and really quite impressive, but the game was Artic’s gargantuanly awful Something Soccer. "Programming difficulties" had prevented the everything-trouncing epic from turning up, but at least you got some badges and stickers in the box to make up for the two-year-old crap game, eh?
