The second camp can, quite frankly, be forced to sit in a room with Premier Manager 2004-2005 on the PS2, or something equally as awful. Football Manager 2006 is the definitive football management simulation, and I’m not afraid to tell you from the outset that FIFA Manager, Total Club Manager, LMA Manager and all the others are trailing by a long, long way when it comes to entertainment value, addictiveness and pure value for money.

Right here, in all honesty. Days have floated by, nights vanished, family events been and gone as this review sat here in front of this PC living the experience that is Football Manager. As fans of the series will know, from the outside you just sit there with an expressionless face, not moving very much and rarely muttering a word. On the inside, you can hear the fans chanting “You don’t know what you’re doing”, you can feel your foot booting that water bottle across the changing room at your failing team and the half time pies smell tempting. Welcome to Football Manager, and the end of your life for the foreseeable future.

This is the best in the CM/FM series to date, no doubt about it. Improvements remain more about evolution rather than revolution, but they are there and they are significant in affecting how the game feels. This remains a world you can become lost in, a game that can engross you, can make you ecstatic, tearful, angry all within the space of a few games. Furthermore, it FEELS just right, you have the right amount of control but there are also enough random elements to make you believe that you are dealing with real people rather than a computer program.

It’s a good thing I went from NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2005 to Worldwide Soccer Manager 2006. EHM was already an epic leap in complexity, depth and sheer red-eye factor over the simulation modes in other games like EA’s or 2K Games’. Better known as Football Manager 2006, the latest in the award-winning FM series from Sports Interactive, it is a definite step forward even over EHM.

Some people would argue that the whole point of the game is to figure out how things work; that makes some sense, but the truth of the matter is that this series long since transformed from a game into a full-fledged obsession. Nothing in the 2006 version does anything to diminish the stellar reputation of the series—the only question is whether you really want to take the plunge. If you’ve already done so, then you probably haven’t oven bothered to read this far. If you’re new to the world of sports-management sims...do you really want to surrender a large chunk of your life? Think carefully.

As you can tell I love the game – chilled on the sofa, joypad in hand, with your own music playing, it’s just a great experience. If a non-football fan can have this much fun, then you lovers of the game are in for a real treat.

You have to hand it to SI. In every other genre there are a few 'must-have' titles, with no singular game that would cover every base. In the world of football management, you really do only need FM. Nothing else comes anywhere near to it in terms of depth, scope or intensity. Forget 3D match engines that bear little relation to your tactics, or the ability to build stadiums and fix hotdog prices. No, concentrate on what's important - feeling like a manager. And FM2006 does that. It's the most accomplished football management sim ever, without doubt.

But what you really want to know at the end of this dissection is whether it's worth shelling out for all over again? Yes, if you want the best version of the best football management game ever made. It would be wrong to expect some kind of radical reinvention, and once again we're firmly in 'incremental update' territory. As with almost all annual game franchises, it's a game of spot the difference, and as many changes as SI can reel off, the differences really aren’t hugely significant. That said, and curious bugs aside (that doubtlessly will be patched over and over), the best just got better. Again. Abandon hope, all ye that enters here. Let's compare addictedness ratings by Christmas...

Again it’s not so much "who are you!" but "where are you?" as regards to the competitors to the largely uncontested ‘Football Manager’ throne. For as long as we can remember no one has come even close to beating the all encompassing franchise and that fact still rings true almost 10 years later. Despite the fact that people may find a level of fun has been lost under the layers of improvements and options, the majority will still find that nothing comes close to quenching that thirst for power using words that Football Manager so eloquently provides.

Football Manager 2006 is here with some new features and of course the all important stat updates. But hang on a minute – we’re getting excited by an annual update? What about all of the moaning everybody does about the yearly FIFA updates? And the rest of the EA Sports brigade for that matter. Surely Football Manager 2006 is in the same boat?

WindowsAceGamez
Every year around about October I get very, very excited. It's been happening now for nigh on eight years and long may it continue. There are very few game franchises that stand the test of time. Tomb Raider fell by the wayside, Burnout is starting to look tired, even Mario seems to have lost that cheeky skip in his step, but Sports Interactive are still going strong with their Championship Manager (now known as Football Manager) franchise.

WindowsBordersdown
This year’s incarnation of the manager's eye view of the beautiful game improves upon last year’s in all the areas you could possibly expect. While the much-mocked spreadsheet appearance remains, player pictures and club badges (at least the ones Sega have licences for) brighten things up a little - it’s always nice to give that star striker that was plucked out of obscurity a face to the unpronounceable name.

WindowsOperation Sports
Let’s be honest with one another. Sports Interactive could just issue each edition of Football Manager (Worldwide Soccer Manager in the USA) with nothing more than a data update and fans would all buy it on launch day. Anyone who has been around this “soccer RPG” knows its addictive grasp on one's life and how in-depth the game really is. As fans of the series will know, from the outside you just sit there with an expressionless face, not moving very much and rarely muttering a word. On the inside, you can hear the fans chanting “You don’t know what you’re doing”; you can feel your foot booting that water bottle across the changing room at your failing team. So, before I even take the shrink wrap off my imported copy, I'm looking forward to it - but does the 2006 edition carry the torch well?

Football Manager 2006 really shows the competition how it’s done. Even though it’s just another manager game, you can actually fiddle with just about every detail of the sport. But you still need to be a fan of this type of game, because it’s definitely not something you just play for a couple of hours and then put aside for months. We don’t think there’s any real danger of that happening, though, because once you get started you’re almost sure to get sucked right in.

At the end of the day Brian, it's the exhilarating moments of Football Manager 2006 that define the game, be it a 30-yard screamer against your hated rivals or a triple save in the last minute of injury time to keep you up. If you barely understand how somebody can "play with their back to goal" then FM obviously isn't for you, but even if you've got merely an inkling of passion for football then, frankly, you should have already bought it.

Football Manager 2006 for the Xbox 360 is the same excellent game it is for the PC with a couple of exclusive features thrown in too. The control scheme takes some getting used to however, and the 2D match view is a little squashed when playing on a standard TV set. All things considered though, this is still a superb debut appearance on the Xbox 360.

Gently slipping the elusive disc out of the delicate box, we slowly placed it in our PC’s drive, and as the inevitable installation process was occurring, we made sure to change our usual garb for something a lot more official; an old fashioned cap and a sheepskin coat, complete with Tunes in the left hand pocket and an endless supply of chewing gum in the other, to calm those match day nerves. Needless to say, when we started, we just couldn’t put it down, and it now looks like we will be hooked for even longer this time round.

Due to a serious shortage of experts on Sports and Manager games, these titles tend to find their way into the hands of people who know little about them, ergo, my hands. I therefore braced myself when I was sent the retail version for Football Manager 06. However, do not despair because we have found a solution! I am proud to present to you our first 'review for beginners'! In this review we want to target people who have little to no experience with the game. Fortunately for our more advanced managers we also consulted someone who has years of experience with this type of games. So if you're a fanatic manager, be sure to scroll down this page.

Where the freshly tea-stained surface doesn’t show through, my desk is covered in scraps of notes – tactical diagrams, player reactions, transfer targets, lists of deadweight and other tatters of paper scrawled with diagrams, numbers and comments. And frankly, for all the mind games, personalities, tactics and emotion inspiring moments within Worldwide Soccer Manager 2006 , I may as well be managing a real footy club.

Players with enough passion for football will quickly lose themselves in the masses of decisions beneath their managerial fingertips, and will also swiftly forgive and forget the seemingly vast plunge in strictly aesthetic frills as the hours slide by. Sports Interactive has produced a faithful interpretation of its massively popular PC management sim franchise, and the 360 handles it pretty darn well considering the lack of mouse and keyboard. Casual gamers and middle-of-the-road football enthusiasts may struggle to accept the game's singular text-based structure, and would perhaps be better off slamming a few goals in manually via FIFA or Pro Evolution. However, hardened sim fans who've been longing for a really decent football management game to appear beyond the PC can now gleefully pull their shirts over the heads without fear of getting shown the obligatory yellow card.

Football Manager 2006 on the 360 really is one of those games that does make us wonder why. However with that said, if you've only got a 360 then this is by far the best football management game around, just don't expect next generation graphics and features.

So, in effect there are two reviews to be done here. If you want a football manager game and don't have FM2006 for your PC or have never played FM, go get this for your 360 now. It's an incredible console football manager game that blows all the others out of the water. To those of you who already have it on your PC, stick with that. If you're good at multi-tasking, you can play it on your laptop while beating the crap out of someone on Fight Night. Happy Days.

As a real manager addict I can't give a very subjective conclusion, but I believe every reviewer needs to admit that this is the only manager game that deserves to get the name of being a REAL sim! Other manager games are more graphically based, while FM2006 is really based on giving the player the feeling of managing a team in all its aspects.

It would be hard to justify FM2006 as a big upgrade; it’s far closer to the seasonal updates that interspersed the Championship Manager series. That said the list of enhancements do make a great game even better and will be fully appreciated by the fanatics.

Worldwide Soccer Manager 2006, known by the less cumbersome title Football Manager 2006 in Europe, is an engrossing and challenging sports-simulation game that gives gamers the control over one of hundreds upon hundreds of professional soccer teams throughout the world. Unlike the games from the FIFA or ProEvolution series, you are not controlling the on-pitch action, but rather serving as the manager (head coach) of your club of choice. It is an extremely engrossing game with an unbelievable amount of depth, but Soccer Manager is clearly aimed at a very small subset of the gaming community.

Here was a game in which you could not only choose to manage a team within a league, but in which you had multiple leagues from which to choose (at present, WSM 2006 sports playable leagues in over 50 countries; I envy the bastards with enough machine to run them simultaneously without slowdown).

Xbox 360Eurogamer.net (UK)
To paraphrase the great Bill Shankly, Football Manager is a simple game made complicated by people who should know better.

Ever since Sports Interactive's formative years, Football Manager's inherent simplicity has always been its irrepressible charm: pick a team, choose the tactics, watch the drama unfold, and then spend hours, weeks, months trying to find a successful formula to bring glory to your underachieving, overpaid slackers.

This is the Mekka for the true soccer freaks! Every team (up to second class) from each country (where an official competition is running) and each player from those teams. You can also see that Sega has done their job and even analysed every player as they've sent out scouts for each country to check and score them. That way the realism of this game got upped another step.

I can only recommend this game to soccer fanatics, statisticians looking for a good time, or gamerscore junkies desperate for a leg up on the competition as less than 1% of users listed on MyGamerCard have even played this game. Everyone else should leave this title on the other side of the ocean for now and wait to see if Football Manager 07 yields any changes for the better.
