This game is so playable, has heaps of life and happily maintains the 'Worminess' we have come to know and love from the Team 17 Worms universe.

Although it enjoyed a huge success, it took more than six years of brainstorming and development before Worms3D was released. The word “3D” had the fans worried though, and the fear that the series feeling would be lost was very high. However, Team 17 did an excellent job with the transition, and Worms3D promises to become a classic itself.

Fans of the series will no doubt be playing this title for years to come, but assuming that no online patch is released (Team 17 and the publisher, Sega, have sadly taken a laid back approach to the online glitches), it looks like I will have to settle for inviting my real-life friends to join the party. Worms 3D is a title that flourishes offline but falls apart when trying to take it Live; a real disappointment in that respect, but fans of the series will love this title with open arms as the core of the game is very impressive. For a mere $20, however, there is no reason why newcomers and casual fans won't find their money's worth here, either.

Worms is such a simplistic yet deep game. It's literally hours of fun, and I am as serious as I can be about that. Worms 3D takes a classic game that I have always enjoyed, added the 3D part yet completely kept the gameplay intact perfectly. This is the ultimate party game, and it is something that you'll want to play by yourself. But there is one rub. If you own all the consoles, then you're going to want to wait a little later on for the Xbox version which will support online gameplay. There's no other difference in the game past that, but it's certainly an addition that you'll want. We'll update our review once the Xbox version is here! But if you just own a PS2 or a GameCube, this is definitely a game to check out!

Worms. Talk about going back in time. Oh my goodness, when you talk about game series that reach way back in time, the game Worms comes mind. Anyone remember the game company Ocean? Yep, we're talking back that far. Ocean was the publisher that got the series started back in 1994; 10 years ago!! This was back in what I like to call the "Lemmings Years". You gotta be real old school to remember Lemmings. Well, for those that do, you remember Worms. Worms went though a number of different games, and covered a number of systems; PC where it started, Apple, Amiga, Playstation One, GameBoy, SNES, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast (with online gameplay), Playstation 2, and GameCube.

Worms, since the series' debut in 1995 on the PC, has spread across damned near anything you can play games on, from the SNES to mobile phones. I think I saw it playing on a toaster oven once.

Der Sprung nach 3D hat
super geklappt. Zwar wurmt
Denn
in den langen Missionen ärgert es mich,
dass ich bei einem winzigen Fehler gleich
alles noch mal von vorne spielen darf.

Ever since the big jump from 2D to 3D, favorite franchises have been trying to make the transition without sacrificing the core, the heart, of what made their games great in two dimensions. Some have been more successful than others. Thankfully, Team17 seems to have taken a long, hard look at what made Worms the multi-million selling series that it is and put in the effort required to make a quite treacherous leap to the third dimension. On all platforms, the basic premise is the same: Missions and challenges are offered for solo players, and a freakishly robust customization system is supplied for multiplayer addicts that want to blow each other up. But that doesn’t answer the biggest question – what is the strategy classic actually like in this brave new world? Refreshingly, and stunningly, it remains largely the same.

That said, Worms 3D is just as addictive as its predecessors, but features more thoughtful challenges and conquests. Pick this up, and you'll be throwing down with your friends for years to come, and it's not often that you can say that about a console strategy title.

Worms 3D is a solid port and clearly the product of stringent QA (Quality Assurance). Kudos to Feral and Zonic. With spruced-up graphics, a multitude of tactics available, coupled with the ever-changing, randomly-generated landscapes, Worms 3D is a pleasant antidote to the glut of FPS releases.

There is no truly suitable introduction to a review for Worms 3D. Nothing that could do it justice, anyway. Certainly nothing that wouldn't come off as pithy and generic; anecdotes from previous Worms experiences would belittle Worms 3D, and to treat it like any other game would be like reviewing A Beautiful Mind in a special-effects industry mag. Rather, the only thing I can come up with is an apology: Sorry, dear Reader, for subjecting you to a review of Worms 3D with a woefully inadequate introduction. At least I'm honest.

Despite the criticisms, Team 17 has still managed to pull off an impressive evolution of a much-loved series. The core game has remained barely unchanged, but the 3D engine introduces a lot of unexpected elements to get used to, both good and bad. The PC remains the definitive Worms platform, as its version not only looks the best but features online and LAN play. The consoles versions are slightly less great, thanks to the cramped controls, rougher visuals (especially on the Cube) and - gasp! - there's no Xbox Live support. Nevertheless, Worms 3D remains one of the most satisfying, addictive and downright enjoyable multiplayer gaming experiences I've ever encountered, online or no, and for that it scores highly.

Who knew that back in 1995, when Worms was first released to the public, it would be such a massive hit? Equally, who cares when the series is still going strong with this, the next generation of Worms, finally bringing it into the third dimension. For those who don’t know, Worms was based on the cleverly addictive Tank, which placed two tanks on opposite sides of some terrain and asked you to adjust the power and angle of your gunfire to destroy the opponent in a turn based dinosaur of entertainment.

Tapping the memory banks, I recall a time that I sat in my parent’s basement chugging through game after game of a shareware title called Scorched Earth on an IBM 386 PS. Its simple gameplay yet extremely addictive “destroy before you get destroyed” style made it one of those unique little titles that you just couldn’t get enough of. Years and years later on the Dreamcast (for anyone who remembers how long it’s been since the IBM 386 PS was out … that’s how long I’m fast forwarding), I got hooked on a title which became popular with many of you reading this review called Worms … which had the same overall 2-D gameplay style as Scorched Earth but obviously with a lot more to show for it. Now, the Worms series has been reincarnated once more, only this time in a 3-D setting.

Fans sollten Probe spielen!

The only nagging issue to really be had with Worms 3D is that it maybe seems a little too much like the 2D Worms games of yore. If you're new to the Worms series, then this is a nonissue for you. Worms 3D stands up as a cute, quirky little strategy game that has some excellent multiplayer capacity. However, the old-timers out there may find that though the transition to 3D is novel, it doesn't really have much impact on the overall experience. There are worse things you could say about a game, and ultimately, it's good to see that Team 17's nihilistic annelids have survived the transition to 3D without much incident.

Despite its draw backs it does stand up on its own as a great game, without
comparing it to previous versions, Worms 3D is a masterpiece of comical enjoyment,
and the lack of certain things found in the 2D version wouldn't effect
anyone that is new to the series. The weapons have also made a successful transition
from the previously flat world into the 3D, containing the same devastating
effects, both to the land and other worms. The new weapons have also been added
without unbalancing the game or making them too strong. All in all, Worms 3D
is a must have for fans of the series and defiantly worth a look to fans of
turn based strategy looking for something slightly different.

Worms 3D is a respectable sequel to the established multiplayer- centric franchise. Team 17 has done a solid job of transitioning its popular series into the third dimension while retaining the classic play and control mechanics that made Worms a hit to begin with. On top of that, the 3D nature of the game opens up -- literally -- a batch of new intriguing possibilities, including the ability to move in all directions, to strategically place worm soldiers on multiple tiers, and to target in first-person for precision hits.

Team 17 understands the value of juxtaposition. It's the crux of the Yorkshire-based developer's flagship series, Worms, where cute, squeaky-voiced cartoon earthworms have been gleefully knocking the tar out of each other with bazookas, grenades, land mines, baseball bats, flying sheep, and just about anything else they can get their hands on for the better part of a decade now. But underneath all the absurdist violence, Team 17 has cleverly been sneaking in some high-quality strategy action that can be enjoyed by novice and expert players alike.

Worms 3D is a pretty good strategy game, but taking the game into full 3D seems to have actually detracted from some of the depth found in the 2D games. Worms 3D puts in a good effort to introduce a third dimension into the formula without losing the strategy and the silliness that defined the series, but frankly, the 2D Worms games of yore were just better. While it's not without its flaws, Worms 3D has the same simple-yet-strategic appeal as its predecessors -- and with the well-implemented Xbox Live support you shouldn't have problems finding opponents. Best of all, it's on sale for under $20; it's a bargain, and one that anyone with Xbox Live or a few friends should snatch up.

Even with its flaws, fans of the Worms games are sure to love this latest addition to the franchise. All of the irreverent charm and style from before are still packed solidly into this title. The multiplayer is phenomenal, and Xbox Live is probably the best online play that the series has ever seen. Although players new to Worms may get frustrated with the controls, if they're willing to tough it out through the initial learning curve, they're not likely to put the game down.

Amidst a sea of technologically advanced shovel-ware and software popularized based purely on theme, a few franchises still cling to the past and prioritize good old-fashioned pick-up-and-love-it fun over everything else. The Worms series, which encapsulates a number of well-received multiplayer titles across a wide range of consoles, falls into the latter group. A simple premise mixes with a spectacular amount of gameplay options for an end experience that is intuitive, filled with strategic elements and extraordinarily satisfying.

Worms 3D is an easy going, fun game that suffers from some control issues. If aiming and movement felt a bit tighter it would be easy to recommend this game to fans of the series. Turn based strategy buffs should rent this title before making a purchase, or wait to see if improvements are made in Worm Forts Under Siege when it comes out later this month.

An insect who has no eyes and no real defense or offense for the betterment of their species, has only been granted both for the past ten years now. Since Worms' initial appearance on the Amiga computer in early 1994, the popular turn-based strategy title to be had been seeding and sprouting its name in a game on every major platform released over that lapse of time. Worms' publishers have varied from Ocean, Titus, Activision, Ubisoft, and even Sega. The torch has now been passed onto Acclaim, who with the franchise's first deviating effort from Worms' longtime UK-based developer Team17 Software, enhances the gameplay formula into a bulgier, bigger, and blatantly more essential format from 2D into 3D.

Ballistics. Setting shot power and trajectory has been a staple of console gameplay ever since Human Cannonball on the Atari 2600. If you've ever felt the thrill of a bull's-eye and the agony of a near miss, you've probably played an incarnation of Worms. Now, Team 17 brings the series into the third dimension. Does Worms work in 3D? The answer: yes. What does it add? A little bit of extra depth for the expert player and a little bit of a learning curve for a beginner. While it's no longer a game that immediately rewards new players, the excellent tutorial makes it just a few minutes away from being a great party game.
