Worms 4: Mayhem is another masterpiece from the Yorkshire Tea drinking developers, another multiplayer hit from those flat-cap wearing geniuses. With dandy graphics, hilarious sound, bags of variety, lots to unlock, loads of weapons and a multiplayer mode with near endless longevity, this title is well worth the brass. Put wood in oil, sit on buffit'and have some reet lark! As good as they mak 'em!

Team 17 have worked tirelessly on the Worms series for the best part of a decade, and arguably, their games peaked with Worms Armageddon on the PC and Playstation a while back. The transition into 3D games came with Worms 3D, which met mixed reviews from critics and fans. Some disagree with the change of style, but there are few successful 2D games nowadays, and none which have had six or seven previous games in their series. With this, the third title in the 3D lineup, have Team 17 and Codemasters finally achieved the fun and extremely playable game we saw with the 2D titles?

In previous versions of Worms in its 3D era, there had been some worm control and camera problems. The team worked on this and the worms are now easier than ever to control - they will glide up small steps etc by themselves, where previously you had to jump, and with the new camera, you'll never miss the action as it always sure you can see your target. If you're a fan of Worms and enjoyed the games so far, this is a must-have. In fact, even if you didn't enjoy Worms Forts, then this game is still a must-have to get you back in on the Worms action! I loved it!

Worms 4 Mayhem is the game that Worms 3D should have been. It is a much more polished product and even addresses some of the issues that have plagued Worms since its very first incarnation. It still takes a little while to get used to but is well worth the effort as the wealth of unlockables and extensive, addictive multiplayer modes will have you coming back for weeks and months. It’s certainly kept this writer occupied - after all, why else would it take eight months to review it?

Finally, with so many changes and customization options this is a must have for fans of the series ensuring a long replayabilty. Whereas casual gamers and those looking for a simple and fun game to pass their time should definitely check it out.

The Weapons Factory and the Worm Customisation aside, Mayhem is not a game about originality. Instead it's been an attempt to lift the franchise back onto the tracks after the lacklustre performance of the previous title. If you don't like any of the Worms games of the past, then it's very unlikely that you'll enjoy this latest instalment, but for fans of the series it's good to see it back on the consoles with such style. Improvements have been made throughout the game and it retains a strong sense of fun throughout, something that has only been accentuated by the inclusion of the various customisations.

The step into the next dimension was a very big decision for Team 17 at the time, and Worms 3D made the transition smoothly, but, it seemed to lack the quality of the original titles. Worms 4 is a big improvement from its 3D predecessors and the game has taken a step in the right direction. Having not being able to test out the online play, the game might be even better than this review indicates for some people, but it is definitely worth a purchase for anyone looking for a decent multiplayer title. For the main story, the game may only be worth getting when the price drops a bit.

After the somewhat disappointing Worms: Forts Under Siege in 2004, Team17 has resurrected the classic gameplay of Worms 3D for their latest invertebrate combat franchise. Offering a wide selection of gametypes from Story Mode and Quick Matches to online play on PC and Xbox Live, together with the new Weapons Factory and Create Game Style options, the Worms appear to be back on top form.

The highly popular Worms series is nearing its tenth anniversary, and despite the "4" in the title, this is actually the ninth to arrive on PC (including the puzzle-based Worms Blast and Worms Pinball). While Worms was originally a 2D game, from Worms 3D the series has gone, well, 3D. The move has been controversial for some - the 3D was difficult to navigate and while ultimately it was still fun, some said the fun had been lost from the game. The follow-up Worms Forts Under Siege didn't fare too well due to its departure from the classic gameplay style, so how will the true sequel, Worms 4: Mayhem fare?

Worms 4 Mayhem proves Team 17 are starting to go back to their gameplay roots, and we for one are glad that they are. The single player mode is actually very playable for a change and serves as a great training ground for the inevitable multiplayer bouts that follow. If you are new to the franchise then look no further, fans? This is what Team 17 should have released last year, it’s just a shame it took so long and that the Xbox Live side is so barren.

Everyone knows that you don’t have to be a serious gamer to play Worms and this one is just the same. Pure childish fun that will have you completely hooked for hours and hours is the name of this game. People of all ages will love this game, imagine a two-player war between your granny and your little brother on Christmas morning and you get a good idea of this games appeal. However, Worms 4 Mayhem does not offer enough improvements to really warrant a sequel game to Worms 3D. It goes without saying that the new game is better than any of the older ones but not a lot has necessarily changed. If you already own Worms 3D it probably isn’t worth shelling out 30 quid just for the few alterations that have been made, even though they may seem cool at first.

Like older versions of the game, it is still hard to jump from one platform to another in Mayhem. One of the worst downfalls we found in the PS2 version was the lack of an online multiplayer mode, which is intact in the Xbox and PC versions. If you do not have a previous version of 3D worms, you will probably enjoy Mayhem very much. If you do own one, you're better off staying away from this can of Worms.

After several strange variations of the Worms series it finally returns to the roots of its gameplay with Worms 4: Mayhem, sort of. As many of you might already know if you've played Worms 3D or any of the 2D Worms games of the past, the point of the game is to strategically position your of cute cartoon worms and annihilate the enemy team through the use of over-the-top weaponry. Eliminating your foes can occur by directly damaging them with weapons, knocking them into bodies of water, or triggering some of the environmental pitfalls like land mines and poisonous barrels.

A good game to have around when you have some friends over for an evening of fun. The worms series is getting better as they go along, but they have yet to reach that pinnacle of greatness. Maybe next time, but in the meantime, you will log hours of fun with this title should you chose to pick it up.

It’s the same gameplay as ever – simple fun, with a little brainpower needed to work out the angle and power of each shot. Unfortunately, it isn’t exactly earthshatteringly different from the previous 3D version so, as with all the others, the real fun is when you’re playing your mates. And we don’t mean online (though you have that option) – we mean sharing the same monitor and gloating like hell when your ’nade powers your opponent into the water. We dare you not to gloat.

Water deaths come all too easily too, though I do welcome some of the mad landmine chain-reaction nonsense that made the original 2D game such a giggle. Worms 4 works great in multiplayer if you've a group of friends who have some skill with the game to make the basic weapons work well; otherwise there is an entertaining single player mode. Worms 4 Mayhem is not a great game, but it is a good, and one perhaps you should try before buying.

Worms 4: Mayhem isn’t a bad choice at $20. I’ll admit that it really isn’t my type of game (I prefer more fast-paced action) but I did enjoy my time with Worms 4: Mayhem. It’s a clever game filled with lots of gadgets and an immense amount of customization that’s usually not found in most $50 games. While it isn’t perfect, most of its flaws are forgivable because of the style and the price tag.

Still, there is a lot to like, and Worms serves it up with a smile. Few things in this world will compare to the sort of manic glee that arises from sighting an enemy worm, targeting it through a gun's scope, and then pausing to watch the intended victim cower in abject terror. Nor can the thrill of a perfect bat strike that knocks a foe off his perch and down into a watery grave be easily discounted. The game may sputter because of its attempt to bring these worms into the third dimension, but it soars when it gets down to what really matters: the humorous slaughter of the bad guys. In the worms, with their gorgeously goofy implements of mass destruction, everyone should trust. Amen.

Worms 4 is a solid return to form for the series that offers plenty to do for the lone gamer as well as anyone looking for multiplayer fun. The new weapons and weapon building are nice touches, but there are still a few niggles that prevent Worms 4: Mayhem from reaching the dizzy heights of the 2D era. It's a step in the right direction and a good sign for things to come in the series and worms fans should find plenty to enjoy.

Making no major breakthroughs in the Worms world, Worms 4: Mayhem merely takes existing premises, and fine tunes some additional features. With a price of admission sitting at $20, players won’t kick themselves down the line for picking this up, but its enjoyment will fade over time. More a purchase for gamers that can take advantage of the multiplayer features the disc offers, as the single player isn’t nearly as enjoyable. Fans of the franchise can expect more off the same, and new comers will find enough enjoyment to match the price.

Worms 4 is a fun multiplayer game, but when you play as a single-player, you will just find a very slow moving progression of a watered down classic gameplay that was lost oh so long ago. If you haven’t played any of the Worms games before and you’re interested in the 3D formula, Worms 4 is a perfect place to get started. If you’re a fan of the series, you won’t find much more here than a few new features and a couple new weapons. Since this is a title at a nice budget price I would suggest buying this game only if you are a fan of this series, but if you’re not a fan I would suggest renting it first if you’re interested in a unique multiplayer action game.

It's not necessarily a bad thing to stick to a proven formula--as Worms does--but there at least has to be some reason to keep playing each new installment of the franchise. Even though it's being offered at a budget price, there just isn't any reason to play Worms 4: Mayhem if you've played either of the last two games in the series. If you've never played a 3D Worms game, this is as good a place as any to start. Still, you'd be better off playing one of the classic 2D Worms games instead.

XboxIGN
Worms 4: Mayhem incorporates even more customization options than its predecessors to provide a truly mind-boggling array of gameplay possibilities. To best experience this game it’s definitely worthwhile to gather together a few friends or take your game on to Xbox Live. For those more inclined towards playing alone there is definitely a variety of play options, but the frustratingly inaccurate controls may drive you away from competing against an A.I. that doesn’t suffer from the same problems. Hopefully in future Worms titles the game mechanics will be perfected so the 3D version of Worms to be as accessible and enjoyable as the original 2D games were. Oh, and it's only 20 bucks.

WindowsGameSpot
Worms 4: Mayhem is the third Worms game in two years, which is a lot of worms. But more importantly, it's hard to believe there's such a rampant demand for these games, considering they really never change or improve over time. Aside from the requisite transition to 3D, the Worms series hasn't changed much since it first appeared on the PC in 1995. Each new installment may tweak the weapon lineup ever so slightly, but these worms tend to stick to their guns. That's both a good and a bad thing for Worms 4: Mayhem.

We reckon the answer's quite simple: everyone keeps claiming that this is just Worms in 3D. It isn't. Worms 4: Mayhem is the same kind of Worms game as Worms 3D with a few new bits and pieces, including some weapon and game-type customisation and an extended mini-game-based "Challenge mode, but, if you ask us, Worms 3D had already abandoned a lot of what people liked about Worms in the first place.

I just can't shake the feeling that the developers of the Worms series are pretty much sleepwalking through each release these days. This would be a fun game if they had actually devoted some quality time to the controls and stuck to the core gameplay (One would think that the third 3d attempt would iron out these problems). Adding platforming elements is good idea but the poor controls made it a nightmare. Ultimately, unless you are a diehard Worms fan I would avoid this one, even if it is only going for twenty bucks.

XboxMS Xbox World
Worms 4 isn’t a bad game but it isn’t very inspiring either and whilst some of the custom options are welcome it cannot mask the fact that things really do move as fast as worms and that the game play has remained pretty much the same. I found that some of the controls were also rather horrid especially the first person aiming with some weapons but I guess you could over look this if you are a fan of the series. I think that sums it up really; tactical, slow turn based game play that will appeal to the fans only. Any one else I would recommend a rental as this might not be what your after.

Don’t get this review wrong: this is not another desperate call for the series to end here or revert back to 2D. The gameplay itself is still in relatively good health, and with a good deal of thought and tweaking could be as enjoyable as it ever was, but if Worms is to once again be a post-pub game of choice, it needs to regain its sense of humour. Without the funny side in check, games like Worms 4: Mayhem are nothing but inoffensive turn-based shooters suitable for kids and adults who love failed comedy. For the love of God, Team 17, either stop making Worms games for a while or stop making them so bloody harmless and mainstream. It’s just not funny any more.
