WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 is the best wrestling game to come out in years and easily the best wrestling game available on console at the moment. The enhanced controls are finally spot on, making for a streamlined and extremely enjoyable experience, the range of match types and modes has never been wider or better conceived, and the game has never looked or sounded better. After a string of arguably disappointing releases, THQ has finally hit upon the magic formula and created the definitive wrestling experience; my hope is restored, I'm back off the mat and fighting once more, and I await the next instalment with great anticipation, with the full expectation that I'll still be playing this one when it arrives.

To be completely honest I was not a huge wrestling fan before playing this game, having not tuned into a on-air television WWE program in over 10 years but just last week I sat down and enjoyed myself watching an entire event. WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 has the single best story mode I have ever played in a sports game, mainly because it features interactive storylines and well written dialogue and superstar match-ups with an exciting climactic ending. This whole game only excited me more to see what the team at Yuke’s will come up with for future WWE games and more importantly what they will do with my other obsession: the UFC franchise (coming out early next year). If you are a wrestling fan on any level there is no reason why you should not run out and pick up this video game right now, and even if you could care less about the WWE there are still plenty of reasons to give it a good play-through.

As a complete package, SVR 09 never fails to impress. The loading times are far less, Road to Wrestlemania is a welcome addition to single player, and the new Create-A-Finisher and Highlight Reel features will add hours of creative ingenuity for fans. With extended online play that can support up to four players and more than thirty wrestlers to choose from, WWE Smackdown! Vs. Raw 2009 is, without a doubt, the undisputed champion of the year for all wrestling fans.

Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 is quite possibly the best wrestling game I’ve come across to date. Generally speaking, graphics are well done, character quirks and mannerisms are accurately represented, theme music is in place, original (or close imitation) voices, and you get the same sort of storylines and feel you’d expect from Vince McMahon and company. When all’s said and done, it really doesn’t matter to me that William Regal doesn’t look like he’s supposed to, because Jeff Hardy does, and more people would rather play as “The Strange Enigma” anyway (gotta love that JR and his linguistic redundancies). The music is catchy and will be running through your head well after gameplay ends. This is one of those rarities, folks – high marks across the board from me. If only more developers put out product at this level of quality…but then, I’d have nothing to talk about for you good folks! Congrats, THQ.

Another year and another WWE game. This year’s game is a big improvement over last years. There really wasn’t a huge improvement over the online play and the same clipping problems are still on the disc. Next year might be better but for now pick this game up if you are a wrestling fan.

SvR’s great right stick grapple system hasn’t changed much in the last few years, so it’s hard to say the series has evolved much on the mat. I’d still love to see a tutorial system to help newcomers ease into play. But I have a feeling this game appeals primarily to the male soap opera crowd, and SvR still has plenty of high class drama and sweaty mat action to please them.

The few blemishes SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 has — you’ll still be struggling to look at the right opponent in a ring full of four or more, and characters clip through each other from time to time — fail to pin it down. The flaws are overshadowed by crisp controls and the same unbridled fun that has made this the best wrestling series for years. In the face of its TNA Impact competition, SmackDown stands up and steps forward enough to stay on top.

Yuke’s really stepped it up for WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009, with the pay off being the finest wrestling game for the HD systems to date. There are a few base gameplay anomalies that keep WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 from being a true champion, but the sheer quantity and quality of SmackDown vs. Raw 2009’s content, not to mention its WWE-perfect grandeur, makes the decision to grant the title belt to Yuke’s latest effort an easy one.

Overall, SmackDown! Vs. Raw 2009 is a perfect title for wrestling fans. It has tons of different match types, plenty of customization options, and provides some new and interesting ways to interact with other fans. This is definitely the most complete-feeling WWE title to come down in a long time, and it is great that the series has wrestled itself back into the spotlight. If you are into wrestling at all, this title is a must-buy, and even if you have shunned away from the WWE games in recent years, this title is definitely worth coming back to the franchise for. Just make sure to bring your sweat bands, 'cause you may be in it for the long haul!

Granted, the motion controls aren't entirely perfect. Some motions don't respond particularly well and sometimes it'll do moves other than what you were aiming for but considering that's as much the fault of the Wii Remote than the developer (*cough* Samba De Amigo *cough*) and how solid the rest of the game is, it's hard not to be impressed. Smackdown Vs Raw 09, the best wrestling game for years? As much as we hate to admit it, we have to agree.

A lot of times, developers will crank out game after game, year after year, wearing down a franchise to a raw nub before innovating. It seems that WWE 2009 has gone the other way: Adding things that will appeal to a broader audience, and making their game better than the other guys on the block. It's very nice to see, and that's why I recommend WWE 2009. The controls may drive you nuts at first, but give it some time. It'll grow on you faster than muscle on wrestlers using anabolic steroids.

And entertainment's been the name of the game, ever since Vince McMahon brought the phrase "Sports Entertainment" into the pop culture lexicon during wrestling's surge in the late-1990s. THQ has created a game that is equal parts extreme sports action and surreal soap opera, an improvement that should keep it at the top of the wrestling game into the next decade. It's apparent that it listened to its fans and tried to bring more of the personality that makes the WWE popular to the already-popular franchise. Let's face it, if pure no-frills wrestling was popular, people would be watching Greco-Roman two nights a week, not Raw and SmackDown.

WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw 2009 finally delivered on the promise of the previous game. Finally, a fully featured wrestling game has come to the Nintendo system, complete with all of the creation systems thus far and full online play. The controls actually work for the system, making it easy for people to pull off some of the more complicated maneuvers and even do things not featured on the other versions of the game. There are improvements that still need to be made, especially in the areas of character animations and audio commentary. When looking at the bigger picture, though, SvR 2009 works exactly as intended. If all you have is a Nintendo Wii and you're looking for a good wrestling title, look no further than SvR 2009. It will definitely fulfill your need for the squared circle until next year's version.

It appears when looking at the sheer number of options available in this game that THQ tried to make the end-all be-all to the wrestling genre. While they did not quite succeed in this endeavor, it was a valiant effort. Unfortunately with this much quantity there are bound to be some drawbacks in quality, and it’s true that the developers cut a few corners by recycling elements of last year’s title. As pointed out previously, it’s tough to make a recommendation that will work for everybody. Those who own last year’s version may not find the new content compelling enough to plunk down another $60, and that’s certainly understandable. However, there’s no question that while not the perfect wrestling title it aspires to be, WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009 is the best wrestling title available at the moment. If you’re new to the genre or just want everything last year had and then some, then you should have a great time climbing in the ring with this one.

Nevertheless, as an overall package, WWE SvR 2009 offers some worthwhile improvements from 2008, most notably its entertaining ‘Road to WrestleMania’ game mode. Whilst the deep control scheme can feel awkward at times, especially if you’re coming into the franchise for the first time, if you have the time or the inclination the rewards are there for the taking. With a impressive list of game modes, match types and editing tools, WWE SvR 2009 is as good as it gets for grapple fans, and with plenty more downloadable content planned there should be more than enough to keep you going until 2009's upgrade.

So, we return to the challenge Kurt Angle and TNA Impact! posed at the top of the review. SDvR09 is better than last year's effort, no question, and it's a better game than TNA Impact! on account of it being yet another iteration of a tried and trusted game engine and packed full to bursting with features old and new. So yes, on the whole it has met the challenge. In a way, however, the true test is yet to come. Next year Midway's TNA Impact! follow-up will have had a solid debut under its belt, and, hopefully, will pile even more pressure onto THQ.

In what seems to be a pretty reliable occurrence, THQ has put together another solid wrestling title. I really dug the depth of the career mode and as always, the creation system rivals most titles in the industry. Overall, SvR 2009 has plenty of good points that encouraged me to overlook its sore spots. Cruiserweights will still animate poorly against behemoths like the Undertaker, and several finishing moves still aren't affected by weight parameters. But at least when I'm trying to score a pin in a 2-on-3-handicap match, my A.I. partner smartly tries to cover my back without getting disqualified (and succeeds). SvR 2009 is definitely worth your time and money, and with the online support and a HUGE list of match types, you won't find a better wrestling game out there. I just hope that in the eventual 2010 edition of SvR, THQ finally puts cohesive, multi-year storylines back into career mode.

I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to recommend this game to anyone who faithfully follows the televised wrestling bouts, as once again THQ and Yukes have delivered a punishing final blow to anyone else even considering developing a wrestling title. The gameplay is really satisfying and deep and it’s visually brilliant too. With the additional online modes and one of the best co-op modes of any game let alone any scrapper, WWE Smackdown VS Raw 2009 is a superb evolution of the series and one even non-wrestling fans might find a lot of enjoyment in.

There are many things to like about Smackdown VS Raw 2009. Instead of just doing the occasional roster and storyline update while polishing some of the modes, Yukes introduced a lot of new features. Road to Wrestlemania, Create-A-Finisher Mode, Inferno Match, Roster Editor, and downloadable content are all a great addition to the THQ franchise. Everything from last year from graphics to gameplay has been polished and upgraded. The roster is as big as ever with downloadable wrestlers coming your way. However a few of last year’s flaws are evident in SVR 2009. Loading times are still a bit too long, the commentary gets very repetitive, the crowds still look a little pixilated, and there are a few notable glitches and collision detection issues. Though it’s not a masterpiece by any means, fans of fighting games and wrestling alike will be satisfied with depth and entertainment that Smackdown VS Raw 2009 brings to the tables, ladders, or chairs.

In the end, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 is a good game but one that falls short of its potential. The Roster Editor is a welcome addition, Create-A-Finisher could be deeper but is a great first effort, the Inferno Match is over-the-top but fun, and Road to WrestleMania is one of the best story modes I've seen in a wrestling game in years. However, I can't shake the feeling that I'm playing last year's game when we get down to the nitty gritty match mechanics. Entrances, match list presentation, animations, and even a couple crowd members are recycled from SVR 08; pixilated audience members in the upper deck and bad belt detection haven't even been addressed; and the ECW Extreme Rules match has been gimped. These issues shouldn't be deal breakers for fans of squared-circle action nor do they detract from the fact that this is better than last year's game, but the problems do leave me without ever feeling "wowed" while playing SVR 09.

After all, if games like Wii Sports have proved anything, it's that casual gamers don't need huge, expansive products to have a good time. Develop something fun and simple for them to enjoy, and then flesh out the bulk of the game for those that really care about seeing and playing it all for years on end. If you've got the choice, this review would encourage you to pick up the PS3/360 version of SVR this year. If Wii is your only system, or if you are looking for a game that appeals to everyone at the sacrifice of more depth and strategy, Nintendo's system still has a very different take on the WWE, even if it isn't as refined or polished just yet.

Above all else, a game should control and play wonderfully before moving on to anything else, and right now Smackdown vs. Raw needs to go back to the basics and remember what made the N64 games (built on a somewhat like-powered system) so damn good. It's about control; always has been, and always will be. Nail that, keep the touch controls in for those that want them, and then expand the design. Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 is a big, big leap in the right direction, but it still isn't a game we'd recommend you go out and buy unless you simply must have WWE on the go. Next year could be a whole other story though, and it's all about control.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 benefits greatly by restraining its scope. You can still edit rosters in Career mode, but other than that, the menu-heavy GM mode has been fully dropped. The result is a game completely focused on action and on letting you customize and enjoy that action. Although some elements still need improvement, SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 is ultimately successful because it embraces the dramatic fights and outrageous showmanship that are the heart and soul of the WWE.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 benefits greatly by increasing its scope. You can now participate in almost any type of match your heart desires, and even pull a wider variety of weapons from under the mat. The new single-player modes offer hours of entertainment, and online play further extends replayability. The tweaked motion controls add an extra bit of excitement to the proceedings, and though some elements still need improvement, SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 is ultimately successful because it embraces the dramatic fights and outrageous showmanship that are the heart and soul of the WWE.

I definitely enjoyed this year's version of the Smackdown vs. Raw series, but I still think that it's time for a serious change of pace. While they've managed to successfully cut out a lot of the filler from the past couple years that have bogged the experience down and made it almost inaccessible to newcomers, the core gameplay still feels pretty identical to what we've been playing since 2005. I'm definitely glad to see the changes they've implemented, but I feel like more needs to be done to really breathe some life back into the franchise. Still, for the fans out there, this is definitely one of the best versions we've seen on the current consoles, and definitely worth checking out for the yearly update.

While the 2009 edition feels much a bit like last year’s offering, SmackDown! Vs. Raw 2009 for the PSP does bring some refreshing changes to the ring. There are still a few elements that still need a bit tweaking but, overall, wrestling fans will find a good reason to lay the smack down once again.

Although WWE Smackdown! vs. RAW 2009 caters more to the fan than the casual player of fighting games, it marks a turning point in the franchise. Based off the changes made here, I can see future installments carry more character-specific storylines in the Road to Wrestlemania mode as well as a revamped Career mode that allows for more co-op and better CAW development. The fighting mechanics have been enhanced and edited to the point that any room for improvement is nearly all in the extras (and if TNA iMPACT! has anything to say, in the animations and the clipping). WWE Smackdown! vs. RAW 2009 is the strongest next-gen title in the franchise, no questions asked.

In short, it’s the best wrestling game available this year, and a little lack of polish doesn’t change that fact. I’d just rather not feel the need to mention it. Maybe a little healthy competition will motivate the good people at THQ produce a truly exceptional game in the years to come.

Despite a plethora of flaws, SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 remains a capable, if underachieving, wrestling game. Players only accustomed to this series may very well find it to be the best installment yet due to the improvements made, while more experienced wrestling game players will certainly be left wanting a more polished experience. As it stands, I found SvR ‘09 to be a thoroughly enjoyable game that was a little too rough around the edges at times - something that I hope can at least be partly remedied with a patch alongside the DLC content.

given that last year's DS offering of the Smackdown series was infinitely superior to the awful Wii game, it's a shame that the role have been very much reversed for the 2009 edition.

'WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009' is definitely worth checking out for newcomers whom may not have experienced a next gen wrestling game or for fans of the WWE brand, although there are not enough significant changes from previous games in the series to call the game an essential purchase.

Smackdown Vs. Raw 09 wouldn't be a hard game to praise...if the 08, 07 and 06 editions had never existed. It's really hard to look at this game, which is almost entirely a rehash, and tell wrestling fans to buy it. The diehard crowd will anyway. But if you're not obsessed with the series, wait for the next true evolution (which will likely occur on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3).

In the end, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 is a fun game that falls short of its potential. Entrances, match list presentation, and animations are recycled from SVR 08. Sadly, the graphics don't do the franchise or the PS2 justice thanks to a crowd filled with undefined blobs, so-so wrestler faces, and belts that hover about people's shoulders. SVR 09 on the PS2 is clearly a toned down version of the game found on the PlayStation 3. If this is your only option, it's a decent wrestling game, but the visuals hold it back from the heights previous PS2 SVR titles have reached.

Still, it’s a decent enough effort, and one that’ll amuse wrestling fans and people who just enjoy a bit of slightly over-the-top fighting action. Whilst it’s not particularly a giant step in the right direction, Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 sees the series keeping its head above water and packing in just enough thrills and spills to keep you playing as the months tick on. With all that said and done, I am now off to create Jay and slam him through a table for forgetting his copy of Gears of War 2 for the second day running. Fun times!

All of these problems make SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 unworthy of the championship. Fans will likely call us out for nitpicking, but for those of us that bought last year's edition, we need a great reason to drop another 60 bones and we can't find one. Road to WrestleMania and Create-A-Finisher (two modes that will get better in future games) are neat ideas, but the actual wrestling failed to inspire us. Of course, if you eat, sleep and breathe WWE, you'll find a decent game loaded with options, wrestlers and weapons to hit them with.

On one hand the controls are a testament to what can be done with the DS; on the other, they also prove that not every franchise should be wholly touch-based. Hopefully the developers can prove me wrong with some radical changes and/or additions next year. But if not, they'd be wise to abandon the touch mechanics.

Unfortunately Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 for the DS didn’t quite make the cut for being a great title. The focus on the stylus controls slowed down a game that is supposed to be fast paced and full of action while the visuals could have also used some more time in the shop. In the end the gameplay, while not bad, was not as enjoyable as I hoped. I figure that with a bit more time, and a bit of improvement all around, the sequel will be the exciting and high impact game Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 should have been. WWE fans will enjoy what is available now, but the experience may be short lived.

In order for Yuke’s to make a great SmackDown game they have to put in an extra year developing it. But that won’t happen, since the series continues to be popular enough to line THQ’s pockets every Christmas. At the very least they can stop bothering with how the game looks. The graphics are good enough. Concentrate on how the next SmackDown plays, whores. It’s going to be embarrassing if iMPACT one-ups you there.

Sadly, the graphics aren't a bright spot and aren't interesting to look at thanks to the ugly crowd and sharp edges of the wrestlers. The straight truth is that SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 on the PSP is a stripped down version of what's on the home consoles, and it shows. It's not bad, but it's nowhere near as solid as or as entertaining as its brethren.

WiiGemakei (formerly Zentendo)
SvR 09 delivers arcade styled fun as the only decent wrestling game available on the Wii. However, a few adjustments need to be made to improve the game. You should be able to run at your own discretion. THQ should do a better job of advertising which match types are console exclusive so as to not mislead their customers. There are confirmations of downloadable content, including a patch to fix the CAW stat problem and roster updates; however, THQ have been iffy on their definition of this as no clear confirmation has come through for the Wii console.

If you can live with the idea of frantically doodling on the screen in order to execute even the most basic of moves then by all means check this out, but everyone else is advised to wait until next year, when we sincerely hope TOSE Software will see sense and drop the needless touch-driven controls for a more traditional interface.

Nintendo DSGamervision
By changing the game to more of a true wrestling game and less of a turn-based RPG, the developers definitely took a step in the right direction. Wrestling fans don’t really want innovation if it gets in the way of controls, and I don’t think anyone could blame them. There are over two dozen different characters and plenty of modes, but none mask the issues in the game design enough to justify picking this up. Hopefully next year, SmackDown vs. Raw will completely remove the faulty control scheme, turning the portable version into a true handheld experience worthy of purchase, but as of now it's like a Mae Young Frog Splash; awkward, ugly, and unlikely to be seen in my living room.

Overall, this wrestling game has just enough content to make it worth your time, but it could've used a little more sting in its Irish whip. WWE SmackDown Vs. Raw 2009 has options galore, some of them proving to be prime additions to the franchise. However, THQ needs to go back to the drawing board and give us a better-looking presentation and some innovative new gameplay techniques. It's good, but not quite "that damn good".

There’s still a lot of work to be done before the Wii has a truly excellent wrestling game, but the semi-natural controls, competent graphics and breadth of gameplay in WW Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 make it a good choice if you’re a Wii-only person.

WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2009 Featuring ECW (to give it its full, catchy title) is a good looking and sounding game. It’s colourful, noisy, faithful to the subject matter and has 20-something characters and 17 arenas to unlock. It has 7 different match types including Last Man Standing, Steel Cage, Hardcore and TLC (Tables, Ladders & Chairs). The trouble is that it’s so badly shackled by its limited movements and sluggish controls that going to a real WWE event and poking the real Triple H or The Undertaker with your stylus whilst shouting commands at them would almost certainly get a swifter response. I recommend the latter; it’d be a lot more fun.

Nintendo DSCheat Code Central
For next year, all the developers have to do is map the moves to the DS's A, B, X, Y, and shoulder buttons, and maybe add some blocking. If that happens, Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 will be, if not a raging success, at least a welcome addition to the handheld's library. As for the 2009 title, only hardcore WWE fans who don't own any other consoles should consider it.

Nintendo DSGamersMark
If THQ were to release this game next year with a more traditional or reliable control scheme, updated roster and deeper career mode, they would have a product that DS owners might actually enjoy taking part in. As it stands, Smackdown Vs Raw 2009 is a broken mess. Sure, winning via count-out is a viable strategy, but fans aren’t paying to play like that in every match. When something as simple as pinning an opponent is an awkward, complicated and unreliable task, you probably need to take a good, long look at your core mechanics.

All the options in the world, however, cannot save an awful game. SmackDown vs. Raw's atrocious controls make it one of the worst wrestling efforts in recent memory and a textbook example of how not to utilize the DS' abilities. If you own a PSP, go with that version instead.
