WWE WrestleMania X8 is a wrestling game based on the World Wrestling Entertainment (formerly known as World Wrestling Federation) license. The core gameplay relies on a grappling system, featuring a variety of specific grapple moves, and counter move system, allowing the player to respond with counters assigned to different buttons. A few weapon-based moves are also included, as well as signature moves and entrances unique to each wrestler.

Match types include Standard, Hardcore, Table, Ladder, TLC, Battle Royal, Steel Cage, Hell in a Cell, and Ironman. The number of participants in the match varies from singles, tag team, handicap, Triple Threat, Fatal Four-Way, to large-scale matches Battle Royal and Royal Rumble. The Path of a Champion game mode provides an opportunity to win any of the titles in WWF Championship, WWF Intercontinental Championship, WWF European Championship, WWF Light Heavyweight Championship, WWF Hardcore Championship and World Tag Team Championship (all the championship names are still referred to as "WWF", despite the promotion's name change).

In the Battle for the Belts mode, the player can attempt to win one of fifty-one fictional belts. The game also includes a Create-A-Wrestler mode, in which the player can create a wrestler with customized appearance, moves, profile, and other options.
