In short, X-Blades is your typical Hack N’ Slash title: short, rough and bloody, which is precisely what sells this type of game. X-Blades takes it a step further by making use of a good, albeit short, storyline. And if that doesn’t sell you for the game, do it for Ayumi’s bikini thong, a constant distraction amidst the myriad monsters horribly trying to kill her.

A pleasing experience for both casual gamers and action/platformer maniacs, X-Blades managed to pleasantly surprise me and offer me a few minutes a day of relaxation and fun. While the game is not complex nor it does want to be, it succeeds in building up a strong new female character - Ayumi, most likely a favorite for anime fans, and a nice fantasy universe setup for the possible sequels to come. Nicely done, Gaijin!

X-Blades is a beautiful, action-packed title with some serious flaws. It isn't really the kind of game you'll want to sit down and play for many hours on end, yet some of the repetitiveness can be remedied by putting the controller down for a while and returning when you've got the urge for some senseless violence and skimpy outfits. Despite finding quite a few things that proved substantially irritating at different moments, the battle-heavy action does indeed scratch an itch.

X-Blades in short is a very simple game with very simple gameplay. Those that get their kicks from half-naked female lead characters have with Ayumi a new and tight toy and will no doubt enjoy the straightforward adventures and fights. Don't expect more but maybe you're not really longing for a game that tries to be more than it really is: a couple of hours of brainless innocent entertainment for boys and girls of all ages.

X-Blades is the kind of game that fans of classic hack and slash will likely find plenty to enjoy once you get past its quirks. The combat is satisfying and the mixture of magic keeps things fresh from beginning to end. The backtracking and repetitiveness cause the experience to drag out longer than it needs to be, but at least you feel like you got your moneys worth when all is said and done. If you are a fan of the genre I suggest checking out a rental and if you take a liking don't hesitate to take the plunge. While it may not set the world on fire with its originality, it will likely entertain anyone who enjoys tapping the same button over and over for hours on end.

Polecam głównie największym wielbicielom bezmyślnego rąbania i... lolitek. A najlepiej obu tych jednocześnie.

Xbox 360GameSpot (Feb 24, 2009)
X-Blades is a competent action game, but it lacks the fine touch that could have made it something special. It just cannot seem to make the most of its solid backbone. The diverse combat is too often made one-dimensional, the impressive visuals lack variety, and the imposing bosses are pushovers. Nevertheless, there is undeniable fun in vanquishing a horde of unholy enemies, and with two endings and a few unlockables, there is plenty of value for those who thrive on disposing of dark forces. Ayumi may not know how to fully dress herself, but at least she can tear through her foes in style, and if you can forgive the repetitive environments and sometimes-shallow battles, this can be fun for a while.

Despite a lead character that isn't the most likeable we've come across and some pretty repetitive gameplay, X-Blades still manages to be decent fun. This isn't enough to elevate it to must own status though, especially with plenty of better alternatives available on each platform. By no means a terrible effort, but X-Blades has too many problems to ignore.

PlayStation 3PSX Extreme (Feb 25, 2009)
What I once pegged as a sleeper hit has left me disappointed. X-Blades is riddled with potential, but thanks to a series of poor design choices, the game lacks the core fundamentals that made games like Devil May Cry and Heavenly Sword so great. The tiny environments, the tedious and boring combat, poor audio, and lackluster control feel really bring down what could've been a solid game. Despite a nice and polished visual package, X-Blades is not worth the coin.

WindowsUOL Jogos (Mar 11, 2009)

Everything about X-Blades is mediocre. It works for what it is, and there’s some charm to the action and the characters, but the gameplay design is lacking in ingenuity; a notion that is perpetuated the longer you play. Some will be able to find more enjoyment with X-Blades than I, but most will likely wind up walking away before the adventure is over.

If X-Blades retail price was $20 dollars I might consider it a worthwhile purchase because you can kill some time with the tedious gameplay. Note that I said I might consider it. At the retail price of $59.99 I would dearly regret my purchase. There are some nice cinematics to look at, some pretty rich colours on display to catch my eye and arouse my curiosity but the core gameplay is just not worth more than 3 hours at minimum wage. I was bored after the first half hour and I cannot recommend this title unless it was a budget release.

This game is exceptionally derivative and remarkably sub-par. The real problem though is that it is just not that much fun – and that is a problem that no game can recover from.

PlayStation 3Game Informer Magazine (Apr, 2009)
Ayumi is a sassy treasure hunter who prefers to explore by herself. Nobody holds her back, and she doesn’t have to split any loot. After playing through X-Blades, I’m confident that most players would be well served leaving her alone, too. It’s a shame, since there should be plenty to love. Unfortunately, the good parts like the unlockable skills are obscured by generic enemy designs, monotonous combat and the most tedious boss battles I’ve seen. Enemies — and their annoying spawn pods — take way too long to kill unless you pause the action and remap the controls for the nth time, making combat more of a chore than a thrill. Worst of all, before the end credits roll, you have to trudge through the same uninspired levels twice.

Czyli: zabiję jeszcze z dwie setki wrogów, a potem (zieeef) idę spać…

I'll say it again: X-Blades isn't a bad game. It's an overwhelmingly mediocre one, and that's far, far worse. Things will not get better. There isn't another, deeper layer to things. It's just mindless, boring fighting until you go insane.

PlayStation 3DarkZero (Mar 19, 2009)
Some gamers might enjoy this for what it is: a simple hack and slash game, with some annoying design flaws, and frustrating boss fights that will test your patience. There’s plenty other choices for gamers on the market, but if you’ve exhausted all those options then the invisible g-string of Ayumi might supply some fun from time to time. Just don’t expect to get anything more than an average shallow game.

PlayStation 3GameDaily (Feb 18, 2009)
X-Blades had great game potential . A gladiator babe in skimpy clothing battling supernatural forces with a combination of sword strikes, guns and a slew of powerful magic attacks usually gains much interest from the male-dominated gaming realm. Although the stages look decent, hideous camera angles make viewing the action a chore and with short levels taking a few minutes to get through, it's only made worse by repetitious hack n' slash gameplay. The unappealing story further hurts the game, and we had trouble liking the main character's annoying Paris Hilton-style. Because of these issues, not even the promise of skimpy outfits sharpens our interest in X-Blades.

PlayStation 3Worth Playing (Mar 15, 2009)
Now, I do love a good action game, and I have no real problem with developers borrowing from their peers as long as they remember to replicate the fun of the titles supplying their inspiration. X-Blades fails to do this by offering some very meager gameplay and level design that stays exactly the same from start to finish. If it weren't for the M-rated content, X-Blades could have been easily recommended to kids for its accessible action and anime presentation, which is a shame because the adult crowd is going to be left disappointed with this game, despite its sex appeal.

Xbox 360411mania.com (Mar 17, 2009)
X-Blades is a bargain bin game that for some reason is being sold at full price. It looks cheaply made, has a cheap story, minimal fun, and overall just doesn’t seem to be that good. It’s sad because this is a game that you can tell the developers obviously took pride in (they even went out of their way to send us a review guide for the game to make it easier on us) and they really WANTED it to succeed. Sadly there are just too many bugs, flaws, and shortcuts to keep this game from being one of the better beat’em up action titles of the year. Perhaps if South Peak wants to go forward with an X-Blades 2 that addresses the flaws the first one had it could do better, but as it stands now X-Blades is nothing more than fan service. Fanservice is okay, but fanservice with nothing to back it up just seems tired and old. This isn’t 1998 anymore; you can’t sell a game solely on boobs and nothing else.
45
PlayStation 3Playstation Universe (Feb 26, 2009)
X-Blades fails to make a lasting impression because combat is just so monotonous. The grind of killing monsters and putting up with their repetitive behavior soon takes its toll, and even the lure of unlocking costumes to dress up Ayumi won’t be enough for you to want to battle through level after level of inept A.I. beasts and thumb-aching fights. X-Blades has visual charm, but the longer you play it the more you'll hate it.

X-Blades proves that video games are not all about computerized tits and asses. Nothing this game has to offer is groundbreaking. Really sixty dollars for this crap? PlayStation 3Armchair Empire, The (Mar 06, 2009)
The game feels purposeless at best and a Sisyphean task at worst. Why do I want to keep rolling the rock up the hill? The answer is: I don’t, so I won’t. All the splashy, light-blooming graphics in the world and a “sexy” anime-lite protagonist can’t save X-Blades.
40
PlayStation 3Thunderbolt Games (Mar 20, 2009)
Sadly, X-Blades falls short of the mark in almost every department, and when measured against the big hitters in the genre there really is no contest. There are a couple of decent ideas here, but the game as a whole needs some serious refinement in just about every way to have any hope of standing out in what is a fairly crowded genre.
40
PlayStation 3Play.tm (Mar 15, 2009)
X-Blades is, in summary, really just one long button-mash-fest, and doesn't require much subtlety as a result. Unfortunately the story and graphics do not do enough to make up for this simplicity - the game is of a decent length but sadly just gets very samey towards the end. Nothing special, overall; one for genre fanatics only.
35
PlayStation 3GamingExcellence (Apr 02, 2009)
In the end, X Blades is just downright terrible. It shouldn’t be played, it shouldn’t be rented and it shouldn’t even be looked at. It’s not a top notch clone of successful series, but more of the failed experiments of clones that are left in incubation tubes in science fiction movies because it is an utter failure. Don’t waste one cent of money or one ounce of time on it.
30
PlayStation 3games xtreme (Apr 02, 2009)
It's not that X-Blades is a bad game, or a mediocre game. It's not a game; it's a torture device and obviously has been designed to subtly degrade the IQ of anyone who has the unfortunate luck to play it. Also, it's a terrible experience, one I wouldn't even recommend to the worst of my enemies.
30
Xbox 360Thunderbolt Games (Mar 20, 2009)
It’s too bad, because in some ways, X-Blades could have been a fun exercise in self-aware game design. Instead, it doesn’t really know what it wants to be, and it never puts anything forward to justify its existence. Ayumi is annoying, the gameplay is boring, and the acting is absolutely atrocious. Devil May Cry already did the whole campy hack-n-slash satire thing, and to be frank, did a better job of showcasing lady lumps as well. In the end, X-Blades is a whole load of bad ideas pushed together into one colossal mistake. It’s pretty and titillating, but just like a real prostitute, your money is better spent elsewhere.

PlayStation 3Gamer.nl (Feb 21, 2009)
25
PlayStation 3Gaming Age (Mar 26, 2009)
In the end these few positives did little to sway me; while all of the negatives knocked me over. For most people I say stay away. I can only recommend X-Blades to people who really, and I mean really, enjoy the endurance challenges in some of the other games and don't want anything more than that.

PlayStation 3Boomtown (Mar 11, 2009)
Nah. Can’t be bothered. If Russian designer Gaijin thinks that, and I quote from its amateurish website, "X Blades is an opulent action spectacle" then it needs to get its eyes checked. This is by far and away one of the very worst games I have ever played. Ever. Oh, and before some sticky-handed fanboy tries to defend it, accusing me of not putting any time into it, they can do so when they can give me back the six hours I put into torturing myself with this dross. That said, if it means that no-one else has to play X Blades, I don’t mind so much.

PlayStation 31UP (Feb 27, 2009)
I can still hear the ba-thump ba-thump of the paused game behind me, begging me back for more abuse, and I'm caught in a spiral of disbelief. Xbox 360Blend Games (Feb 26, 2009)
There's just something very derivative about this game. In fact, that's the best word for X-Blades: derivative. It just feels like somebody said "Let's make a game about a bunch of shit we like. Swords. Guns. Devil May Cry. Anime." It's a shame that they forgot to include the most important thing: fun. If you own a gaming platform that plays X-Blades, there is a 100% chance that that platform has at least four 3rd-person action games that are all leagues better than this one.
