X-COM: Terror from the Deep

This is the difference Terror from the Deep presents. It takes valid threats from Enemy Unknown and overdoses them with huge injections of improved AI, accuracy and toughness. "X-COM: UFO Defense" was one of the best games I had ever played in my life, therefore you can imagine the great anticipation with which I opened the package of "X-COM: Terror from the Deep", the new sequel from MicroProse.

X-COM est un jeu de stratégie/wargame remarquable. Bien que très similaire à UFO, il est doté de décors plus variés, d'une plus grande profondeur et d'une plus grande durée de vie. Attention, X-COM nécessite qu'on y consacre énormément de temps.

I could go on and on and never say enough about X-Com. But I realize that whenever I do, I'm actually talking about the original. Terror From the Deep is a great expansion pack, and should be thought of as such. It's only for those who adored the first and were disappointed when it ended. For newcomers or tired vets of the First Alien War, rest assured that TFTD is strictly optional. It manages to capture the greatness of the original only by shadowing it with every step, and is remarkable only in offering a fresh environment and new aliens with increased difficulty.

X-COM erfüllt mein persönliches Kriterium für ein Spitzen-Spiel: Man hört erst auf zu spielen, wenn es draußen wieder hell wird. Den Qualitätssprung von UFO zu X-COM kann man dabei durchaus mit Civilization und Colonization vergleichen. Wer den Vorgänger kennt, braucht nicht mal einen Blick in das Handbuch zu werfen.

X-Com: Terror from the Deep is proof that you should be careful what you wish for. When X-Com was riding high on acclaim from gamers and critics alike, a bunch of us said we'd love to see a sequel, even if it was more of the same. (--Dan Bennett)

Sure, they added new ships, new weapons, new aliens and new research items, but that is it. It looks more like a remake than a sequel. I expected better graphics and some new gameplay features. Honestly, I completed UFO many times, but I'm not sure wether or not I completed TFtD even once. Still, this shouldn't discourage you from trying it out. If I put this lack of new features aside, its actually a great game, just as UFO was.

Terror from the Deep är ett ganska krävande strategispel. Det tar lång tid, också på den lägsta svårighetsgraden, innan man får klart för sig hur rymdvarelserna ska slås tillbaka.

Für UFO-lose Naturen kein schlechter Kauf; wer den Vorgänger schon hat, kann aber drauf verzichten.

Following in the footsteps of X-COM UFO Defense is no easy task. A modern classic of strategy war gaming, the original X-COM combined an amazing turn-based battle engine with a complex resource management system to become one of the most addictive and innovative games of the last few years.

Meer van hetzelfde, daar komt het toch wel op neer. Dat betekent niet dat Terror from the Deep een slecht spel is, maar eigenlijk is het alleen de moeite waard voor diegenen die deel 1 nog niet kennen.

Für Taktikcracks ist Terror from the Deep immer noch eine Herausforderung – unvorsichtige Truppführer verlieren in einer einzigen Kampfrunde leicht die halbe Abteilung. Der Detailgrad in Sachen Ausrüstung und Befehlsmöglichkeiten ist höher als bei vielen modernen Taktikspielen. Wer sich nicht an dem teilweise nervigen Aufstöbern des letzten versteckten Gegners stört, bekommt genug Unterhaltung für einige Wochenenden.
