Survival of the Biggest
In 4x4 EVO 2, weekend warriors race across a variety of landscapes in gas-guzzling SUVs. Many manufacturers lend their powerful off-roaders to this title, including Chevrolet, Dodge, GMC, Infiniti, Jeep, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota. These rough riders run the gamut from classics like the 1985 Chevy Blazer K5 to the new Jeep Liberty and cushy Lexus RX300.
There is no reason to covet your neighbor's Yukon XL anymore, because you can get behind the wheel of more than 80 of these monsters and blaze trails through 35 rugged courses. Rolling over the sandy coast of Baja Beach and winding roads of Pike's Peak is what real men dream of while they are stuck in gridlock on Monday morning.
Winning races in 4x4 EVO 2 takes more than a tuned-up V8 and a set of knobby tires. To out-drive the competition you must find the quickest route to each checkpoint using your on-board map. Trekking through uncharted territory is dangerous but necessary. You will also need to downshift when you attempt to climb steep hills.
Off-Road Rebels
There are several modes that just let you jump into the driver's seat and cruise from dawn until dusk. Quick Race lets you choose any unlocked track and any available vehicle. Free Roam allows you to explore your environment--maybe you can even scout out some good short cuts. Time Attack gives you a chance to set a fastest time on any track or challenge a translucent ghost racer.
The real meat and potatoes of 4x4 EVO 2 is the Career mode. When you start a Career, your wallet is padded with a $100,000. It is up to you to invest in a stock vehicle, earn more money, and load your garage with finely tuned performance racers. Vital statistics for each SUV are listed to help you decide, including Torque, Horsepower and the ever-important Ride Height.
A plethora of parts can also be purchased for each vehicle including Brakes, Chassis, Drive Train, Electronics, Engine, Suspension and Tires. There are literally hundreds of upgrades to toy with and even some extras like Lights and Mud Flaps. It's hard to resist getting attached to your favorite ride. There is even an option to give it a post-race wash.
To earn money in the Career mode you must enter Series races that range from three to 17 events. If you perform well consistently you can even win an overall series championship. There are also Qualifying Events that will grant you access to more Series, and Missions that give something constructive to do with your road hog. Missions often ask you to get from point A to point B as an emergency relief driver or field assistant. Successfully completing a mission can yield a good chunk of money.
Graphics
4x4 EVO 2 does a fine job recreating every fender and spare tire of the real-life vehicles, and the replays show off the well-animated suspension systems of the detailed models.
There are three different views to choose from including a nice cockpit view. You can really feel the bumps and dips as you peer across the hood of your Toyota 4Runner.
Each of the views lets you see clearly what lies ahead, but unfortunately there isn't much to see. The environments may not be exactly the stuff of picture postcards, but the weather effects and sweeping views are quite nice.
4x4 EVO 2 reminds us why overgrown family vehicles are all the rage. If you are an SUV enthusiast you will enjoy the large number of vehicles and upgrade parts. The wide-open track designs are interesting, but not nearly as exciting as tinkering in the garage.
This game has been rated "E" (Everyone) by the independent Entertainment Software Rating Board. Progress is saved to a Memory Card (not included).
