Description

In Advent Rising, you play as Gideon Wyeth, a rookie space pilot. Gideon has a loving fiancée and life smiles. That is, until mysterious aliens appear. Gideon and his brother, a hero space pilot, are invited to the historical greeting party. Though the aliens are friendly, they come with a warning about another, vicious race, known as "the Seekers", who have decided to exterminate humans. Soon after, the Seekers invasion begins, and so does the actual game.

The game itself is a third person shooter and you control Gideon. Generally you just go around shooting things - with a new kind of targeting system. On Xbox you'll select targets by tapping thumbsticks towards the foe you want to shoot, on PC this happens by scrolling the mouse wheel (although you can use the mouse for manual aiming and thus avoid scrolling through long list of enemies). You can also gain psychic powers to aid your combat. These powers work like character upgrades, and even though the existence of these powers hasn't been explained much, they make virtual life a lot easier.

Trivia

Some additional information about the game:
  • Advent Rising has been developed in close cooperation with science fiction author Orson Scott Card.

  • The musical score is performed by a 70-piece Hollywood union orchestra, led by Emmy Award-winning conductor Mark Watters. The soundtrack was released separately on June 28th, 2005, on the Sumthing Else Music Works label.

  • The game uses Epic's Unreal Warfare 3D engine.

  • This is the first installment of what was meant to be an Advent Rising trilogy. The sequels were not released, but the developers originally planned that decisions made in the first game, would be reflected in the second and the third part.

  • A contest was launched along with the game, for US and Canadian residents. The first 500,000 Xbox copies sold carried a special marking, which could be exchanged for a free, two-month subscription to Xbox Live to participate in the contest. Through a new or existing account, players could search for an easter egg in the form of the letter 'A' which was be downloaded via Xbox Live and hidden within a level of the game. The letter was turned into a code and every first week's user to log in using their Xbox Live Gamer Tag, won. There were many prizes, with one Grand Prize winner receiving a $1,000,000 annuity. It was meant to end on August 15, 2005, but was postponed due to technical difficulties.
