The Aliens Versus Predator universe has been a staple of video gaming for a number of years now, and it's not hard to see why. It draws from two well-developed and immensely popular action movie franchises, both of which feature creatures, characters, and weapons that lend themselves nicely to the typical action game. Most of the AVP games released to date have been first-person shooters, with a few brawlers thrown in here and there, so it's a bit surprising to see that the newest one, Aliens Versus Predator: Extinction, is actually a real-time strategy game. It's even more surprising, given the somewhat dubious history of RTS games on consoles, that Extinction is a thoughtfully designed, complex, and pretty fun game to play. Alas, a dearth of supplemental features and some flimsy presentation drag down what could have been a more solid overall package.

Just RPG
Alien vs. Predator: Extinction is a game with a lot of problems, but it’s not often that you find a decent RTS on the consoles. Hard-core RTS fans might find something worthwhile, and fans of the Alien and Predator franchises might find it worth their attention. The Alien campaign is pretty fun, each species plays greatly different, and the controls work pretty well for a console RTS. I’d advise anyone thinking about buying this game to give it a rental first, though, because it’s not for everyone.

A console RTS, you say? Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction could change the minds of gamers who doubt the RTS genre could ever work on the Xbox. It?s just too bad poor level design and lackluster graphics keep it from reaching its true potential.

Alien versus Predator, now when are we going to see this movie? All we have had are videogames based on these two huge franchise names. The Alien versus Predator franchise has seen its ups and downs in terms of videogames. Personally I believe that the Atari Jaguar version of Alien versus Predator [FPS] was by far the best game made for the franchise to this day. There were a few versions as well, some for the PC, some for the SNES. We are now blessed with a new Alien versus Predator game Alien versus Predator: Extinction, compliments of Electronic Arts and Zono, Inc. This time around though, we have a RTS. So does the Alien versus Predator universe make the transfer over to a RTS and come out being a winner?

One of the biggest gaming tragedies of 2003 is that Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction shipped with no multiplayer options whatsoever. The final blow comes from the lack of single player skirmish mode. To put it bluntly, Extinction has no replayability whatsoever. At this stage though it is the closest thing the Xbox has to an RTS, and if you are a fan of the Aliens or Predator movies or just a strategy buff, the chances are you will enjoy Extinction. For everyone else, it's a rental.

In short, it is better than some of the RTS titles that I have seen on consoles, but it still feels lacking. The AI should drop the I, and there are just too many holes in both the campaign stories and the gameplay itself. So, while I can't really recommend this title to many people, fans of the whole mythos may still enjoy a stab at it.

When people think of Aliens and Predators, they instantly envision a grand first-person shooter. They see fast shooting action, with dark levels and violent adversaries. Despite having painted this pretty picture for gamers, Aliens Vs. Predator: Extinction is vastly different. The new game to bear the AvP name is a nod to the Command & Conquer series and other real-time strategy (RTS) games. Is the result a deathly game to add to your collection, or is it just dead? Read on.

With few RTS options for Xbox and PS2 fans of the genre, Aliens vs. Predator has the distinction of being one of, if not the best game of its type so far. The rub is, that in comparison to modern and pre-modern titles for both the PC and earlier consoles (Herzog Zwei and Utopia: Creation of a Nation run circles around it), that statement will end up holding very little water. For fans of the Alien and Predator franchises, however, there could be enough appeal via presentation and curiosity-factor to warrant a likely weekend rental or perhaps even a hesitant purchase. As it stands right now, though, enthusiasts may do themselves an even better service by running out to their local store and picking up the FPS "Gold" versions of Aliens vs. Predator 1 or 2 for the Windows format. Two games combined that equal the singular price of Extinction, they're infinitely more entertaining and better capture the essence of the AvP mythos.

The biggest flaws with AvP: Extinction are the lack of a rotating camera, the unit micromanagement required, and the fact that there are only 21 missions in the game with no multiplayer at all. While the game weighs in at an affordable $40 at retail, it's up to fans to decide if only 21 missions (seven per side) are worth the price. I wasn't disappointed with the game, and I don't think fans of AvP would be either.

Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction is one of those types of games that will require getting used to before you can say it’s a game worth your time. Sadly most gamers will not be willing to put this time in due to the lackluster graphics and sound, as well as a limited draw in effect. With that said, however, Extinction is one of the better console RTS games to date, and probably features one of the most user friendly control setups. Sadly, simply being a better console RTS does not mean it matches up to the great PC RTS games most gamers are accustomed to. While worth checking out, don’t expect to be blown away by any sort of revolutionary gameplay.

But thanks to good controls and a truly imaginative take on the AvP universe, Extinction turns out better than expected. You can tell the developers really loved the movies. It’s just too bad they didn’t take it far enough as a game, serving up a short campaign and failing to offer any extra modes. On the other hand, there’s nothing quite like playing as a whole deadly Alien hive, and on your console, you simply don’t have many other strategy options. In space, no one can hear you say rental.

When the original AVP game out, it was one of those games that made you jump, playing it in the dark late at night was not a good idea if you planned to go to sleep soon after. Even still after all this time (some five years) the two AVP FPS’s are at the cutting edge of gaming. EA have been brave to move the genre on, to try something new and for those looking for an RTS on a console - something that the X-Box lacks - this will fulfil your requirements. The problem is though is that it just doesn’t cut the mustard. The AVP range is supposed to scare and this just doesn’t do that. For the money that you’re going to spend on the X-Box version you could buy both AVP and AVP 2 on the PC and have a fair better if not scarier time.
