    Bottom Line

Some folks are content to drive a car as-is right off the assembly line, pop a tennis ball on their antenna and bump Neil Diamond on the eight-track. These are the people that won't appreciate Need For Speed: Underground. If you've even considered revving your engine while waiting for a stoplight to turn green, you have to take this game for a ride.

    Step on it.

Experience the style and speed of the illegal street racing scene in a conveniently condensed package.

Featuring street and drag-racing competitions with upgradeable cars from Mitsubishi, Mazda, Toyota and more, Need for Speed: Underground packs the highlights of the GCN game into a sleek, portable package.

    Features

    • Race 20 different licensed cars from major manufacturers such as Honda, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Volkswagen and Nissan
    • Race through cityscapes, dodging traffic and navigating shortcuts
    • Compete in more than 100 street racing, drag racing and drift events
    • Win races and events to earn street cred and cash, then blow it all on hot new cars and parts
    • Impress the crowd and your opponents by tricking out your ride! Customize your car's performance by using hundreds of parts from manufacturers like MOMO and Neuspeed
    • Modify appearance, too, changing rims, stickers, paintjob, spoilers and more

    Bottom Line

The GBA version of Need for Speed: Underground manages to keep most of the cars, tracks and parts of its bigger and badder GCN brother, but it's not the most beautiful GBA racer on the block. The 3D engine suffers from sluggish frame rates and low-quality textures, diminishing the game's speed rush. Despite its graphical problems, the game offers a huge amount of car customization. Need for Speed fanatics and devotees to the street-racing scene should take it for a test drive.
