For hardcore hockey fans, the Xbox version features several interesting alterations over the PlayStation 2 version. The rosters are more current, and the framerate is incredibly smooth. EA has taken the liberty to enhance the graphics to include both reflections and shadows. The only downfall is that the players don’t look as sharp. They all have a fuzzy tint to them.
NHL 2002 also treats players to new NHL cards for added replay value. These cards are just like Madden cards and will add new abilities or unlock Easter eggs to enhance your game. One of the modes I unlocked was Shrink 'n Grow, where players would shrink when they got leveled and grow when they scored. By the third period, I had a Godzilla-sized Teemu Selanne and a bite-sized Owen Nolan. Very fun and very funny.
NHL 2002 for Xbox is, by far, the best version in the franchise's history. Although the Create-A-Player feature isn't as good as some, everything else about the game is top notch. If you're looking for a hockey game to play in the off season, hit the ice with NHL 2002 and you won't be disappointed.
In any case, NHL 2002 is an excellent sports game. It's more satisfying to hockey fans than Madden is to football fans because the essence of the sport shines through all of the glamour and polish. Not that there's anything wrong with the extra stuff EA loaded into this game, but one of the truisms of videogames is that when all of the fancy stuff is said and done, there's nothing but you the player and the gameplay. NHL 2002 is fast fun and highly recommended to all sports fans, not just hockey fans.
NHL 2002 is the deepest, most realistic 3D NHL game on the market. Even though its graphics fail to take advantage of the Xbox hardware, its depth of modes is staggering, and the gameplay is predominantly tight. Aside from quirky goalie AI and some default settings that must be adjusted, it will be difficult to find a more realistic game of hockey on any system for the next year. NHL 2002 is the best professional pucks game on the Xbox, and fans of the sport should buy it with confidence. The casual hockey fan would do well to rent both NHL 2002 and NHL Hitz 2002 and see which style of game is more appealing.
NHL 2002 ultimately succeeds at bringing NHL-styled hockey to the XBox. While it isnt a perfect recreation of the worlds "coolest sport," it does a nice job of capturing the major nuances of the game and recreating them in videogame format. Couple that with the great graphics, the amount of replay offered by all the different game modes, and the high level of customization available to the player and you wind up with one very satisfying gaming experience. Only the fact that it still plays more like arcade hockey than the true NHL game keeps this one from cracking the 9.0 score barrier. One can only hope that next years NHL 2003 improves on the solid foundation laid by this game.
NHL 2002 mainly keeps the same gameplay that has been working for years. Yet, they did try to improve the longevity of the game with the introduction of the NHL cards. Similar to the Madden cards found in the football franchise, you will gain points for certain feats, these points can then be spent on cards that grand you special abilities. I didn’t find them all that enjoyable, but it is a pretty cool way to get new goal celebrations.

NHL 2002 is one heck of a hockey game with nice gameplay and graphics to match along with a reasonable amount of material within the game to keep anyone going for a while. The game is just hindered by a lot of small things that could of easily been resolved, but still if you’re a hockey fan or if your not this remains one of the best hockey games on Xbox and worth buying.
If you enjoy fast-paced, action packed, back cracking, ice cold hockey, I suggest you head on over and pick up this title, or at least rent it. I enjoyed my time with this game, as I have with pretty much the whole EA Sports hockey series. Port or no port, this game is good. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it is a must buy, but if you’re a fan of real hockey simulation titles, EA Sports’ NHL 2002 should be included in your library.
NHL 2002 is a serious ice hockey game peppered with some unusual gimmicks. It lacks a stirring soundtrack and there are a few issues here and there, but on the whole it's a very good interpretation of the game with plenty of replay value. I doubt anybody will unlock everything the game has to offer overnight, and in any event it keeps you coming back. Although the statistical side of the game will doubtless be lost on many Europeans, and the slower pace comes as a shock after NHL Hitz 20-02, the good definitely outweighs the bad.
