With the release of NHL 2K3, Sega Sports continues its hot streak. Both its NFL 2K3 and NBA 2K3 have been multi-platform hits and sent notice to top dog EA Sports that it is no longer the only sports game maker in town. NHL 2K3 delivers another blow to the House of Madden. With its great graphics, dead-on physics, and online play, it ekes past NHL 2003 in almost every category. Hockey titles generally don't generate the same type of buzz that football or hoops titles do, but that shouldn't keep NHL 2K3 from getting the recognition it deserves. Simply put, it might just be the best console hockey game ever released.
Gaming Age (Nov 29, 2002)
Ultimately, it's the rock-solid hockey experience that makes Sega's NHL 2K3 the seminal hockey game on consoles today. With AI that is light years ahead of EA Sports, a simulation experience that's second to none, and a fun - if somewhat fickle - online experience with Xbox, the serious hockey gamer should only look at one title this year. Presentation issues and occasional graphic glitches aside, there isn't a hockey game on the market fit to hold NHL 2K3's jockstrap.
GameZone (Dec 04, 2002)
Sega Sports has done it again, NHL 2K3 is an exhilarating and challenging hockey game with enough action to keep sports fans on the ice for hours. And Xbox Live subscribers will be in for a real treat when they see how many hockey gamers are waiting to challenge them. This is the hockey game to buy if you’re shopping around for the ultimate hockey game.

Offline, NHL2K3 represents one of the truest-to-life video game presentations of actual NHL hockey. Single-player or multiplayer, NHL 2K3’s game action unfolds so close to the real game of NHL hockey you will be amazed. Online, the game is unbelievable. It’s clear that Sega used the learning experience of the Dreamcast’s SegaNet online gaming to its utmost advantage, because the seamless and lag-free gameplay provided by NHL 2K3 is simply fire-on-ice marvelous.

NHL 2K3 would be nothing without LIVE play! Oh baby, LIVE play is the backbone of this game. I’d feel naked without it! If you have LIVE, it’s a must buy for the hockey fan. Even if you don’t have LIVE, or are a hockey fan, you will find it enjoyable.
IGN (Nov 11, 2002)
I love console hockey. I admit I'm only a casual real-world NHL fan, but NHL 2K3 has done an amazing thing -- it's made me want to learn more about hockey. In fact, it's turned me into a more serious hockey fan. That's saying something for a game designed for those already devoted to the church of Lord Stanley. NHL 2K3 is a real prize wtih some fantastic gameplay, but it's hampered by a variety of nagging "why nots" that have plagued many Sega Sports games. With decent, but not spectacular visuals and sound, NHL 2K3 seems less stunning than its other Sega siblings. Still, if you are a fan of hockey or if you want to try hockey on a level beyond Hitz and NHL 2003, then this is absolutely the way to go. And it doesn't hurt that it's online!
All in all, this game has brought hours and hours of joy to my friends and I. With so many options and features chances are the fun-factor won't run dry. There are so many crazy comments chipped in by the commentators and great replays so that even if you aren't a huge NHL fan you will gain a lot of enjoyment from this game.
Consoles Plus (Mar, 2003)
GameSpot (Nov 19, 2002)
Fans who have been complaining about hockey games being too arcadelike can now rejoice. There is absolutely no reason why a hockey fan with an Xbox should skip this title. The new additions, excellent gameplay, and Xbox Live support make this the best hockey game of the year.

TotalVideoGames (TVG) (Mar 28, 2003)
So, a good game? Oh yes, ooooooooh yes! NHL 2K3 is an absolutely brilliant game to play - really enjoyable, really addictive and instantly playable. Sure, it's got its weaknesses, but then so has every game ... congrats Sega!
4Players.de (May 01, 2003)
The Video Game Critic (Apr 26, 2003)
Is there something wrong with my TV? Why are these graphics so frickin' DARK?! It looks like someone turned my brightness all the way down, and I can't even adjust it! Actually, Sega has a LOT of explaining to do for this game. After seeing rave reviews for it in some video game magazines (who got paid off no doubt), I was stunned by how excruciatingly bad this is.
