Pro Race Driver is easily one of the top racing titles on Xbox even if it doesn't have Xbox Live functionality and role-playing elements. The racing engine carries the entire thing but it's so refined that this isn't a weakness. In fact with the beautiful graphics and damage effects, PRD gave me the style and the substance that I feel more games, in any genre, should have. If I had to point out a weakness it would be the structure of the career mode and the way it limits the player to choosing racing team, car and racing circuit all in one shot. There are plenty of each to choose from but being able to mix and match a bit and still have it mean something in the overall career could've lead to some interesting combinations. As it is though, the game shows off all of its cars, tracks and beauty in due time as long as your good enough and patient enough.

Worth Playing
Overall, Pro Race Driver is a fairly solid package. The story’s not great, but it gives you a reason to keep playing through the many races. And although they may not offer a whole lot of variety, the actual driving is very good, and you can always play however you like in the Free Race mode. The graphics and sound are a mixed bag, but the presentation is well-done. If you’re looking for a new racing game, this one could be it. Give it a rent to see if you like it, and if you do, don’t hesitate to purchase it.

Pro Race Driver is the fourth in Codemasters' series of touring-car games, which goes by many different names around the world -- none of them as stunningly generic as Pro Race Driver, but I digress. Originally released late last year for the PlayStation 2, on which it suffered by unfair and inevitable comparison to the unstoppable Gran Turismo 3, Pro Race Driver deserves a second chance at commercial success on the Xbox; it's an excellent racing game, with tight control and great AI that transcends its gimmicky "storyline" angle.

In the end, it's not so much that TOCA Race Driver fails in any one area, it's just that the whole game feels so worryingly generic that it's hard to be engrossed and enjoy the racing in the long term. The end result? A good if familiar racer that's certainly worth a look.

The lowdown so far is that this game is so-so. If you are into racing games you might find this a good game, or you might find it really lacking. It does have a lot of cars and tracks. It has an interesting story mode. It has the potential to be a good game. I just find it lacking in certain areas (i.e. the actual controls and racing) that make it just so-so. And on that note, if you think you are interested in this game, give it a try first. Make sure that you think it’s a worthwhile investment of your time and money. You will either be pleasantly surprised or, at worst, you will think its just ok… I am tilting this game’s scores on the gameplay a little, because of how I feel about it. For racing fans it’s definitely worth checking out though, even though I didn’t give it a high score.
