This is a game for racing simulation fans, for Sega GT fans, and for anyone who likes Gran Turismo. There are just enough extras and different modes to really make this game a must-have. Wait, let me just add that you may like Gran Turismo, but you will love Sega GT 2002.

Sega GT 2002 is no Gran Turismo but it definitely will fill in nicely for Xbox owners who want that deep racing sim experience on the most powerful console around. The car collection is interesting and meant to appeal to everybody from street racing fans to grease monkeys to suburbanites. There's a little something for everybody here but not enough of the cars you do like.

All in all, whilst Sega GT 2002 isn't an example of the racing sublime, it is a fun and solid effort, which shines with raw driving enjoyment, but sadly lets itself down in a few niggling ways. It's a slow game, and if you can stand the slow progress you'll be rewarded with many hours of rewarding action, as well as some good AI and solid visuals.

Sega GT 2002 isn't perfect, but it is a stellar racing game. I'd have to say that overall, it is the longest racing game available for Xbox. Length is very important to me, and I know that it's important to many of our readers, so rest assured, this is not a beat-it-in-a-weekend kind of game. You could probably conquer most of the Chronicle mode in that amount of time, but don't even think about beating the GT mode that quickly! It won't happen, period. For me, that's great. With as busy as I am, I know that Christmas will come and go before I've done everything there is to do in this game.

Released for the Dreamcast in 2000, the original Sega GT was a grand touring game that clearly borrowed Gran Turismo's winning formula, albeit without meeting the same success as Sony's venerable racing franchise. The game had great graphics, a respectable number of licensed cars, as well as a variety of tracks, but some sloppy controls, a poor interface, and an unintuitive car-creation tool kept Sega GT from being more than just a run-of-the-mill driving game. Unphased by the cool reception, developer Wow Entertainment is taking another shot at racing glory with Sega GT 2002 for the Xbox, and the improvements are quite evident. The control is now precise, the interface is slick, and the inclusion of classic cars is a welcomed addition to this sequel. Sega GT 2002's only real issue is a relative lack of racetracks, but the game has enough depth to overcome that problem.

Sega GT 2002 aspires to the grandeur of the Gran Turismo series for the Xbox, mixing sim and arcade elements to produce a racing game that both hardcore and amateur speedsters can enjoy. Car enthusiasts can appreciate the vast assortment of vehicles. For the real buffs, however, the game features options to fix your car for an even faster ride: Adjust the weight, add a muffler, or sport racing tires to blow away the competition. Enhancements to cars make a difference in the controls, plus you can feel when the tires and brakes are wearing down, which adds to the game's authenticity. Sega GT 2002 is nicely tuned with both a solid graphic engine and a smooth, idling soundtrack, but not everything is good under the hood. After successfully finishing the B License test, competitions become extremely unforgiving for unmodified cars.
