www.nintendo.com – Nintendo GameCube:

When bringing the Dark Side to justice, there's no such thing as 'excessive force.'

What does it take to become a Jedi Knight?

    Bravery? Heart? Intelligence?

Now all it takes is your Nintendo GameCube. Become one with the Force in Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast from LucasArts.

    Return of the Jedi

Following the exploits of soldier-for-hire Kyle Katarn, Jedi Knight II features a healthy mix of first-person shooting with third-person swordplay. The mercenary Kyle gradually returns to the honorable Jedi path he once knew (a story told in the first Jedi Knight game for the PC) in this engrossing tale of revenge and love lost.

Most of your adventure involves missions of espionage and action. The life of the Jedi favors the latter, often requiring you to dispatch Storm Troopers and likewise hostile remnants of the Old Republic.

    The Arsenal

Just about every form of laser-firing apparatus imaginable is yours to command. Star Wars mainstays like thermal detonators, bowcasters and blaster rifles can all be used in combat. And of course the Jedi weapon of choice (i.e. - the lightsaber, for the uninitiated) has also made the cut.

Once obtained, your lightsaber quickly becomes your primary tool in nearly any situation. Not only can it block enemy laser fire, but it can be tossed like a boomerang at foes out of arm's range. The limited reach of your lightsaber can be compensated for by proper use of your Force skills.

    Use the Force, Kyle

Kyle shows no specific devotion to either the light or dark side of the Force. As such, he has the ability to control powers from both sides, once they're unlocked. Kyle gains new force powers as the game progresses, including speed boosts and self-healing.

Those with a taste for the dark side will delight in the addition of lighting and grip attacks. You can even use the patented "Jedi Mind Trick" to distract susceptible Storm Troopers.

Perspective changes on the fly from first-person to third-person to accommodate any combat scenario. One of the game's unadulterated joys is mowing down Imperial forces with blaster fire in the first-person mode. The game wisely shifts to third-person camera when you wield the lightsaber.

The mission-based levels require Kyle to complete specific objectives before advancing. Look forward to lots of exploring and activating buttons.

Thankfully, each level is huge with areas faithfully modeled after the movies. There's nothing quite like zipping through Cloud City or traipsing through the Rebel Base on Yavin IV.

Multiplayer modes include Capture the Flag, Free for All, Team FFA, Lightsaber Duel and Jedi Master. Two players can go head-to-head in the Jedi Arena.

    Creating the Star Wars Universe

Adding to the familiar locales are cameo appearances by other Star Wars heroes. You'll run into old friends like Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian (whose voice role was reprised by movie vet Billy Dee Williams). Story progression is narrated via well-animated cut-scenes. While not quite Hollywood caliber, the story is entertaining enough for any Star Wars fanatic.

From a design standpoint, nearly everything shines brilliantly. The excellent sound design will immerse gamers in the Star Wars universe. As with most Star Wars titles, Jedi Knight II features most of the sound effects and music made famous by George Lucas's movies.

    Yin & Yang

Much like the conflict between the dark and light sides of the Force, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast combines brilliant game design with less-than-stellar visual effects. In the end, gameplay takes precedence over all. Jedi Knight II triumphs.
