Tenchu: Return From Darkness is a solid action title. The linear nature of the levels is a bit of a drawback. However, if you are seeking some stealth ninja action for the Xbox, this title may hold what you are looking for.
Tenchu: Return from Darkness allows you to immerse yourself into the life of a ninja. Multiplayer mode is good and Xbox Live support is also a nice addition, but I think they could have done better with some more missions, rather then just reuse single player missions. Tenchu: Return from Darkness also gives players a wide variety of options in order to achieve his/her goal. Tenchu: Return from Darkness would make a great addition to anyone's Xbox collection that is a fan of this type of game.
Denn was nützen mir neue Lichteffekte und eine Hand voll zusätzlicher Polygone, wenn man gleich die ganze Palette an Hässlichkeiten übernimmt, die letztes Jahr schon nervten: Kamera-Probleme, üble Grafikfehler, öde Texturtapeten, eintönige Magerakustik – das ist einer Xbox einfach nicht würdig! Viel schwerer wiegt, dass man die KI immer noch nicht für erstklassige Schleichabenteuer optimiert hat; gerade die spektakulären Stealth-Kills produziert man mühelos am Fließband. Aufgrund des guten Leveldesigns und der hervorragenden Kampfanimationen macht das zwar auch auf der Xbox im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes einen Mordsspaß. Aber nur die erhöhte Einsteigerfreundlichkeit und der Online-Modus adeln diese Umsetzung gegenüber dem PS2-Pendant. Ansonsten spielt Tenchu weiterhin in der zweiten Stealth-Action-Liga, hinter Metal Gear Solid und Splinter Cell.
Neuerscheinungen wie Ninja Gaiden werden dem jüngsten Tenchu-Sprößling ein schweres Leben machen, vor allem da die PS2-Portierung technisch nicht mit den Neuerscheinungen mithalten kann. Wenn ihr die Serie allerdings noch nicht kennt und auf ziemlich blutige Martial Arts- und Schleich-Action steht, dann solltet ihr Tenchu: Return from Darkness eine Chance geben.

It’s been a year since Wrath of Heaven was released on PS2, and now Xbox owners finally get a port. It’s being touted as a remake with better graphics and AI and such, but in reality, this is simply a port. Yes, this version has fewer jaggies than the original and the guards block more, but they’re still dumb as rice cakes and forget about you seconds after leaving their sight. In all honestly, there is not a single thing about this version that stands out as superior to Wrath of Heaven.
Tenchu: Return from Darkness has finally arrived on the Xbox, if you never had the chance to experience a Tenchu game and are a fan of stealth games you should absolutely check out Return from Darkness. Despite the problems covered above, Tenchu is a great experience. It's good to see the series expand and hopefully there will be more Tenchu titles in the future.
Although Tenchu is one of the most entertaining stealth franchises, the games tend to fall under the one-and-a-half sequel syndrome?stick in a few tweaks and features, and call it a new game. Tenchu: Return from Darkness is no different.
The Xbox loves ports. That's often seen as a negative thing because oftentimes games aren't optimized for the console, and sometimes turn out worse than the original. But on a brighter note, sometimes the ports feature upgraded graphics, features, etc. Such is the case with Tenchu: Return from Darkness.
Tenchu: Return from Darkness could have been a great game, but instead, it arrives as a lackluster port with average graphics, a poor camera system and stupid AI. After having said all that though, Tenchu isn’t a bad game. The gameplay is fun and there is enough variety to keep it interesting, at least for a little while. There just isn’t anything that makes this game stand out as a "must have" title.
Certes, Tenchu arrive sur Xbox avec quelques niveaux et combos en plus mais surtout avec des graphismes dépassés, une maniabilité toujours aussi raide et surtout un gameplay qui a terriblement vieilli alors qu'il n'était déjà pas au top. En clair, si c'est l'infiltration qui vous branche, mieux vaut attendre l'arrivée du prochain Hitman ou Splinter Cell. Il reste toutefois une ambaince à part et un mode online sympathique.
When Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven was released on PS2 last year, it was hailed - third-person camera issues notwithstanding - as a gruesome and generally competent example of fleet-footed slaughter, and topped the charts. Upon closer inspection though, it was hamstrung by technical problems that regularly conspired to derail our ninja fantasies in punishing and frustrating ways, and ultimately it fell some way short of achieving its full potential. Yet, despite our initial misgivings, the thought that Return From Darkness might address Wrath of Heaven's technical failings was more than enough to tempt us back for another helping. And with so many look-but-don't-touch stealth titles doing the rounds, all that painstaking murder sounded slightly cathartic, too.
It's a shame that the first Tenchu on Xbox took more steps back than it did forward. Multiplayer mode is a good addition, but doesn't make up for the fact that the single-player mode has been made worse. This isn't Tenchu's shining moment, which is what it should be. Instead, it's a quirky step into multiplayer. Action fans playing the series for the first time will likely be into it, albeit cursing the camera most of the way. For those who played through Wrath of Heaven, only take a swing at this if you have a strong lust for multiplayer.
Ultimately, Tenchu: Return from Darkness was a huge disappointment, unlike the original that sucked me into the ninja world. There just wasn’t anything very impressive at all here. Weak visuals, gameplay that runs through its total variety in the scope of an hour or so, and sounds that just don’t seem to be there at all combine to spoil the experience. It would look like the next generation of consoles will have to continue to rely on Ninja Gaiden as the hallmark ninja game. We are simply going to have to wait a bit longer to get a game in which being a real ninja is viable. Until then, game on with the up front combat types with guys in ninja suits.
