www.nintendo.com.au – GameCube:
Penned by Man of Action, a studio of comic industry veterans, X-Men: Legends begins with the rescue of a young mutant and takes players through an engrossing plot that could unite mutant-kind, yet destroy the human race in the process.Along the way, players will be able to assemble their ideal X-Men crew from over 15 of the most popular characters from the last 40 years, including Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Gambit and Beast, to name a few. However, before players load-up their squad with heavy hitters, they will have to take their foes’ abilities into consideration as certain situations may benefit from the abilities of specific X-Men. While Cyclops’ optic blasts and Colossus’ immense strength are great for clearing a path through hordes of enemies, players can opt to bring Wolverine and Nightcrawler along on a stealth intensive mission to help circumvent detection devices. Once the action begins, players can take control of any member of their squad and even execute multi-character combinations such as the famous Wolverine/Colossus Fastball Special. As they progress through the game, characters will gain experience points that players can use to upgrade the X-Men’s abilities and even learn new fighting styles. Four-player co-operative mode is also planned, allowing multiple players to partner-up in X-Men: Legends. With dynamic joining, new players can join the adventure at any time, or gamers can take a break and pit their heroes against each other in the X-Men’s famed Danger Room.

Four player simultaneous action
The group that gives mutants a bad rap, The Brotherhood, have freed
their leader, Magneto. And he has plans to turn the Earth into an
eternal winter wonderland. Call on the X-Men to save the Earth from the
deep freeze.
In this action RPG, you control a team of four mutants as your X-Men
span the globe to stop Magneto. As your team fights, you control one
member and the computer AI fights for the others. At any time, you can
switch characters by pressing a direction on the Control Pad. Via the A
and B Buttons, your character performs different combat combos or simply
deliver simple strikes. Outside of jumping, your character can also pick
up and throw enemies and items within the environment, such as trash
cans. Pressing the R Button enables your X-Men character to perform a
signature move.
Like any good RPG, level-ups occur as you progress through the game.
When you control a team of four X-Men, all characters will earn points
for leveling up in battle, not just the character you control. In
addition to upgrading character attributes, you get to equip your
characters with items to pump up their attributes.
Even with the RPG trappings, X-Men Legends excels when it comes to
action. The cel-shaded characters enhance the quality of action.
Occasionally, you'll need to switch characters to solve a puzzle. Iceman
is the only one who's going to build a bridge for you. The ability to
change characters freely not only helps in battle, it helps shield a
weaker party member (or one that has taken a lot of damage) from the
front line. If you get too far ahead of the rest of your group, press
the L Button to call the other members for a little help. Through this,
you and another X-Men mutant can perform nasty combo attacks on a pesky
enemy.
Up to four players can embark on the mutant mission, each playing his or
her favorite X-Men character (there are 15 playable X-Men in all).
However, in story mode, other players will need to wait to join in until
Wolverine gets through the first part of the first mission. Then, a
second character is introduced. After the first level, all four players
can play. The biggest limitation to the extra players is fitting all the
action within the screen.
As extras, you'll find comic books, which both look cool and add to your
character's attributes. Occasionally you come across CDs which contain
missions for the Danger Room training area. Plus, the game gives you
alternate X-Men clothing outfits. Don't read too much into the RPG
angle; it's more of an action game that has you power up your abilities.
Bottom Line
Combat to the power of X. Get behind a mutant and blast away.
