At 400 MP Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe is a very good deal and one that many will find hard to pass up. The game does enough to encourage new players to pick up Asteroids while still appeasing the classic fanbase.
That’s not to say these are bad games. On the contrary, they’ll likely stir some major nostalgia for a lot of older gamers out there that remember when arcade games were fixtures in bars and pool halls - back when the cabinets came complete with ashtrays and drink holders. But they haven’t stood the test of time as well as some other bona fide arcade classics, and as such, probably won’t be worth 400 Microsoft points for younger gamers who don't feel nostalgic about them.

If I could have bought this game using the 100 points that always seem to be leftover in my account, I would have been very happy with the few minutes of simple accessible escapism Asteroids provides. At 400 points, it still doesn't rob your wallet however, and at least it's simple, accessible and briefly entertaining.
With Asteroids Deluxe you're getting a 20 year old game that can be found around the Internet for free. The feeling of playing Asteroids again will be fun for some, but it sure doesn't last long. The "Evolved" visuals are extremely cumbersome, even if they do brighten the screen and increase the presentation values and it's disappointing to see that they limited the gameplay area to a 4:3 ratio rather than widening it out and delivering the full widescreen environment to roam around in. The Asteroids Deluxe package is another classic game that feels like its achievement points are worth more than the purchase itself.
