I found Astropop to be a highly addictive little puzzle game that is sure to be high in my rotation of arcade games to continue playing. The achievements, while tough, are not impossible to achieve and the drive to get those points is going to help propel the desire to continue playing the game. Thanks to the different character abilities there is slight variation in how the game plays, even though it all boils down to the same thing, destroy the bricks.

Astropop does what most arcade games fail to do, and that is provide a challenge that is also fun, and have lasting appeal. When you lose in a level you aren’t forced to start from scratch. Instead of starting from level one you redo the previous level. Losing over and over results in you being pushed back down a level and having a big chunk taken away from your total score. This isn’t a big deal because once you get on a roll again you can make the points back. Astropop is definitely worth the 800 Microsoft Points.

This was a really fun game to play, but it did take me a minute to really get into it. For 800 points, it's not a bad purchase, especially for anyone that's a fan of Bust A Move or Tetris. Definitely give it a try, I don't think many will be disappointed.

The bottom line however is that regardless of the platform you play it on -and why not choose the best while you’re at it- Astropop is one of those brilliant games that is easy to get into and absolutely beckons to be played again and again. Yes, when I play Live Arcade (and that’s anytime I’m not really sure what else to play) the two games that get loaded are Mutant Storm and Astropop. Like Tetris, the simplicity and elegance of concept are a perfect marriage to the gentle challenge and “just one more try” mentally of the best games out there. The game may not have changed much, but it’s still worth your time and money. Highly recommended.

Astropop offers enough fun in its gameplay and design to warrant the purchase. The implementation of save points to ratchet down frustration is very thoughtful and the inclusion of bonus puzzle levels adds some variety to the mix where other games would have allowed themselves to begin to stale. The one thing that’s missing from the package is a multiplayer mode which, while not as important as in other Xbox Live Arcade titles, would have really been icing on this already attractive cake. For an addictively good time if you’ve already enjoyed the original offering of XBLA titles then you needn’t look any further than Astropop.

A simple game, Astropop is. Simply choose one of four spaceships, pull down colored blocks from the oncoming rows and shoot them back up in order to connect four blocks of the same color.

The game is simple but very, very addictive in both modes. The bright, colorful visuals help make the whole package more inviting, and if you happen to be colorblind, you can enable symbols on the blocks, which will make things much easier to deal with. It's possible to set up pretty massive combo chains, which are announced by a calm female voice using Killer Instinct-like language like "hyper combo" and "ultra combo." The rest of the sound effects are fine, and the music is good, though there isn't much of it, so it gets really repetitive.

Das perfekte Spiel für zwischendurch. Im Gegensatz zu Geometry Wars macht das Spiel allerdings schon nach kurzer Zeit keinen Spaß mehr. Der fehlende Mehrspielerpart und der ziemlich hohe Preis von 800Points lassen die Wertung noch weiter nach unten sacken. Somit bekommt das Spiel nur 6Punkte von uns.

With no other modes to comment on, or even difficulty levels to play around with, Astropop is a fun, but ultimately short-lived experience that's missing the X factor of the best puzzlers to drag you back for long. And given the game's 800 point price tag, we'd argue that it's not the best bang for your buck compared to other games on the Live Arcade. For less than seven quid it's cheap, but maybe not cheap enough to really warrant a purchase. Download the demo for free and then decide - as ever - but you'll probably agree that crate of sugary fizzy stuff offers better value for money and a longer lasting rush.
