The Internet world may have been up in arms over the 1200 points price, but to us we pay for quality, and there is more than enough quality here to ask for such a pricey sum. On a console starved of the genre, Banjo-Kazooie really stands above all the others and for a ten year old N64 game, that’s some achievement.

We’ve been waiting a long time for this game. And yes while it’s a departure from its pure platforming roots we’re happy to say we love the direction RARE has taken it. The game is fun and rewards your creativity and imagination. It’s presented beautifully and you genuinely feel happy to be back in the seat taking on Grunty again. While a few minor issues keep this from true greatness, there is no doubt that subsequent (we hope) entries to the series will achieve this now that RARE knows the formula works. Those who are new to the series and faithful fans alike, which may have been apprehensive about the new direction owe it to themselves to give this game a try. It’s an engaging yet relaxing experience that proves RARE still has some magic left in them, and at 40 bucks you really can’t go wrong.

With a solid level design, unique transformation mechanic, and plenty of loveable charm, Banjo- Kazooie still holds up well to the stringent of today's gaming market. If you can look past the shaky camera then you will be in for a treat, as Banjo- Kazooie is still loads better than Rare's latest effort, Nuts & Bolts.

The tandem moves, along with Banjo’s more personal moves (the big bear slide, melee claw and general jumping) can be blended together nearly seamlessly via good timing by the user. Smooth moves like this are paramount for a platformer, which probably explains why Banjo-Kazooie, even ten years after its release, is still a solid player for both the pick-up-and-play crowd as well as the serious jumpers out there. There’s enough comic relief and clever level design surrounding the slick team-up moves and animations of Banjo-Kazooie’s leading animals to pull it all together into one of the better classic console platformers to grace Xbox Live Arcade.

Going back and playing through Banjo-Kazooie again was an incredible sensation for me. As my generation has grown, we've heard stories from the generations before about the games of their childhoods. Now it’s time for my generation to look back at the masterpieces we grew up with, and maybe pass them off to a new generation of gamers, wasting their time on their Gears of War and Sonic Unleashed crapfests. If you missed this gem the first time, spend the $15 on it. It’s charming enough for the youngsters, and it has that familiar feeling and love from the golden age of 3D platformers. Some might say that the collectathon game is dead, but I believe it’s alive and well when someone can do it right, and without vehicles.

Banjo and Kazooie is a 3D platformer therefore the controls take the form of a classic setup that work fine on the Xbox controller. You do need to take into consideration that this game is over 10 years old and an awful lot has improved over time. The camera control is tough to keep it where you want and at times the controls feel sluggish, especially when flying and swimming, but when all is said and done it has achieved an awful lot and I any still enjoying replaying the whole game. Banjo Kazooie comes at a price of 1200 points, which I feel is reasonable for a game that will take some time to complete 100%.

1200 MS Points might seem a little steep for a game that originally came out ten years ago, but this is a true classic and a game that stands up very well today. Visually it's certainly showing its age, but the HD spruce up means it's by no means ugly and the core gameplay is just as universally appealing as it ever was.

The game throws you into an open world where you must scrounge up 10 “jiggies” — jigsaw pieces that unlock more worlds. Before you get back into the old-school groove, you may find these searches a tad frustrating, especially when a spastic camera tends to launch your bear-bird duo off cliffs. But once certain puzzle strategies (e.g., shooting three eggs instead of one) become second nature, the jiggie hunt turns into the exciting adventure it’s meant to be (and that we remember it being). Varied worlds, unique challenges, and kooky characters make this old-timer a worthwhile blast from the past.

Banjo-Kazooie is a great game for a kid to play around with, something that the 360 library is often lacking, but many people will find this style of gameplay outdated by modern standards. There's a reason developers stopped making platformers like this one: Most gamers have had their fill of simple fetch and hop games and like a bit more action and drama on their consoles. If that sounds like you, stick with some of the heavy hitters the 360 has at retail this holiday season. Otherwise, enjoy a well-made trip down memory lane.

Worth Playing
Banjo-Kazooie remains a solid resurrection of a classic game whose influential nature can still be appreciated and enjoyed today. Unfortunately, it is hampered by some bad camera glitches and could have used a few more enhancements, given the price tag. Anyone who's been digging the latest Banjo-Kazooie outing, Nuts and Bolts, and is dedicated to playing through the original adventure will probably find this worth their cash. However, those who just want to take a trip down memory lane, which I've found is often the case with many old-school XBLA purchases, might be better left with dusting off their old N64s.

Even as I come to the end of the review, I’m still pondering whether Banjo-Kazooie is worth the 1200 Microsoft Points tag. Yes you get a fun-filled adventure which many players will enjoy, but the lack of replayability is an off-putting factor.

For a game costing a princely 1200 Microsoft Points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 14.40), we'd have hoped Banjo-Kazooie to have aged rather better than it has. As it is, it's still a solid platformer with some neat ideas, but it's undone by a host of camera and control issues. If you popped your gaming cherry playing Banjo as a youngster, prepare for nostalgia tinged by disappointment, as you discover it's not quite the classic you remember.
