In releasing this DLC, Gearbox and 2K have done what seems to be so difficult for other studios: drop a well designed, value laden expansion pack in a timely manner. With a tighter, more condensed storyline, tons of great humor, lots of varied enemies and fresh, new environments to play in once you finish your first run to the Vault, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is a simply awesome expansion pack and a great way to change up your Borderlands experience.
At $10 or whatever that translates to in Microsoft fun money, you're looking at at least another eight hours of gameplay (maybe more if you don't work on the brain-hunting missions while doing all the other ones). At that price, Zombie Island just may be the perfect place for your next vacation, and for your next level up too. I went from being a level 40 Hunter to level 46 while playing through the new missions available. It arrived just in time too, as I was starting to lose interest in my second playthrough. If you're still playing or are looking to reach that level cap with something a bit more engaging than grinding, I suggest you check it out.
Next time, if they boost the level cap and give us some new awesome loot to find, Borderlands could easily become a great platform for regular new DLC adventures.
With the inclusion of Zombies, Borderlands: the Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is actually not more of the same and definitely throws a curve ball into the genre and as Zombies are the in thing at the moment, it's great to send these undead back to their graves for good, just make sure you have some wet wipes available because it's going to get messy!
The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is a nicely distilled slice of Borderlands that bodes well for future DLC potential. The dramatic moments that are fairly strung out in the main game happen with invigorating regularity. And the flashes of comedy are much more frequent, giving the action a lively, entertaining vibe. From voice recorders chronicling the exploits of unsuccessful zombie hunters, to the casually maniacal hilarity of Dr. Ned, to heartbreaking Claptrap-on-Claptrap violence, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned delivers the game's distinctive humor even better than the original and has all the great gunplay and satisfying loot to boot. If you've got any kind of desire to seek out further adventures on Pandora, you should definitely pay the Zombie Island a visit.
In fact, the entire package presents some of the best Borderlands' gameplay to date, and this first batch of downloadable content is more entertaining than any plot-arc on the disk. While there aren't any driving sections or new items to strive for, the additional locations and opportunities to fight waves of undead fit Borderlands better than slaying Bandits and Skags ever did. The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned manages to pack more humor and wit in its three hour campaign than Borderlands did in all twenty. The only issue is the length, which, when put against the cost, might seem a bit mismatched. Even so, it's quality over quantity in this case, and 2K has proven themselves completely capable of continuing the Borderlands experience past the Vault and I, for one, can't wait for more.
A thoroughly enjoyable and action-filled story, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned should be on the top of your Must Download list for those who want to extend their Borderlands experience. It’s offbeat and comical but you will have a great time so if you own the game you should certainly download this mission.
While I wish The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned added some more innovative and substantive mechanics to the Borderlands formula, the completely re-skinned experience is definitely enough to warrant this add-on's purchase. Besides, the quality of the co-op gameplay found in Borderlands is undeniable, and Zombie Island gives you the perfect excuse to head back to Pandora and dish out the hurt. If you haven't gotten completely burned out of Borderlands' shoot-'n-loot hijinks or are looking to pick the game back up, taking a relatively new character through the perils of The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is certainly a worthwhile endeavor.
The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is a fantastic way to kick start the Boderlands’ DLC. The new setting and enemies offer a refreshing change of pace, and the comedic writing, characters and pop culture references are as good as ever. It might not look appealing to those already on level 50, but if your trigger finger is itchy then there aren’t many better ways to spend five hours.
The bottom line is that if you’re a fan of the original game, then this is a must-download. It’s very entertaining and it’s great to take a break from the bleak deserts of the Arid Badlands and New Haven. If you’re a casual Borderlands player, this might not be of big interest to you. It certainly doesn’t improve upon the game in anyway. Here’s to hoping that there’s a lot in store for the next installment of Borderlands…
The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is a solid addition for anyone who wants more Borderlands, but the lack of additional items or further opportunities for character building feel like a missed opportunity that could have given this content a lasting effect. Without any of that, you're really just paying $10 to tack an additional few hours of content onto an already-long game. As someone who played the heck out of Borderlands and desperately wants more, that's totally fine with me. But if you've already moved on and want something with a little more substance, this might not be the DLC for you.
If nothing else, it's entirely fitting that a game that's always been brilliantly brainless is now genuinely brain-dead as well. Oh, and I finally got that bloody Mario-themed Achievement. SCORE.
With a dark and gritty seasonal feel to the level design, an endless stream of undead cannon fodder and a mad Dr. You can't go wrong with this DLC. For fans looking for an additional layer of gaming from their Borderlands experience, should be pleased with the 800 point offering despite a lack of new items. That said, if you've not got mates buying the content, then be prepared to play online with randoms, which might not always be favourable. The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is enjoyable and a welcome dlc pack for the game and well worth the investment considering what's on offer.
The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is a well-made and entertaining piece of content, giving Borderlands fans a chance to sink bullets into undead flesh in new environments and with some additional quest goals. The expansion also offers stronger story elements, something mostly propped up with wacky humor and nonsense, which is quite fitting considering the context of a zombie outbreak and ludicrous amount of loot and bullets and death. While it doesn't alter the core of Borderlands in any dramatic kind of way, it is one of the most vividly characterized zones. Considering the strength of the gameplay formula and the fact that it's still fairly soon after the main game's release, what's presented here -- more things to kill and more reasons to laugh while doing so -- is welcome.
The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is a humorous and entertaining episode to extend the Borderlands experience. However, it can be a bit repetitive at times, and it lacks any worthwhile souvenirs.
I think Zombie Island offers enough for Borderlands fans for the asking price of $10. While lacking a few key wanted features (new level cap and weapons), Zombie Island still brings enough to the table to make a solid first expansion.
This downloadable content really is the definition of 'more of the same', which is definitely a bit of a mark against it. However, when the main game is as good as the original Borderlands, getting more quests to complete, more enemies to fight and more areas to explore is nothing to sniff at. It works well as a first piece of DLC for those like me who finished the first game but found themselves hungry for more - but Gearbox must ensure the next expansion is much more substantial. If you found yourself wanting more Borderlands though, this is the answer to your prayers.
For those that have the means and already enjoy the campy humor of Borderlands, Zombie Island of Dr. Ned may be just what you’re looking for. I really did enjoy the presentation of this episode from start to finish. I hope the next DLC maintains this tradition while addressing some of the more glaring shortcomings.
