Borderlands is a surprisingly fun experience, especially when playing online with friends. If you are the sort of person that enjoys hunting for treasure in games, always trying to have the best equipment possible, then you will find a lot to enjoy here. Those looking for a deep and lengthy story telling experience may be left a little disappointed, but the dialogue of the characters makes up for that particular shortcoming. The RPG elements are slowly introduced to the player so that even a novice will quickly pick up the complexities of the game and be equipping modifiers with the best of us.
Those seeking a solitary-oriented experience with Borderlands should be warned- the single-player game can feel unmistakably grind-heavy at times. However, those who prefer more communal diversions will likely be absorbed into the title’s well-crafted world. Borderlands is the rare game that culls from a variety of sources, competently interweaving the elements into a cohesive and satisfying package.
Gearbox has done a great job with combining FPS and RPG elements to make Borderlands. The guns you can find will always have you looking for something better, plus the skill trees will allow for customization to take place with characters. The game really comes alive when you have friends join in with you. A must have game for FPS fans, and a game that everyone should at least check out.
Offering up an open world with plenty of quests to complete, guns to collect, and enemies to shoot, Borderlands gives players dozens of hours of content to explore. With four different playable classes and online co-op, Borderlands is a highly replayable adventure, and one that will live on in our memories long after the credits roll.
Gearbox's Borderlands is without a doubt a slick, satisfying hybrid title for those who know what to expect. If you're a shooter fan curious what the world of Pandora is all about, then you should know that this is a product built on a foundation of statistical progression, character customization, and one that holds item acquisition high above interesting quest structure and narrative. At the same time, it plays like a shooter, requiring twitch skills to dominate the droves of enemies that stand in between you and your search for a mysterious vault. With the opportunity for up to four to join together for co-operative play, four character classes, a dizzying array of firearms, around 20 or so hours of content for a single playthrough and the option to restart with stronger enemies and loot, there's plenty of content here. It's a thoroughly enjoyable journey that offers a steady stream of rewards that remains convenient and accessible.
After you uncover the secrets of the Vault, you are once again set loose into Pandora, where you are free to quest on and remember why you enjoyed your previous hours with the game. Borderlands has tens of hours of quests to fulfill, and you'll likely find yourself enticed back to explore new skills, find new guns, and kill more enemies. Though the core action doesn't change drastically over the course of the game, it is woven together in such a way that once it ensnares you, you'll want nothing more than to plunge into Pandora at any chance you get. Combat is satisfying, and upgrading your skills and equipment is engaging. The constant stream of loot and experience is rewarding, and sharing it with some friends makes the experience that much richer and more exciting. Despite its hostile (albeit stylish) environment, Pandora is a great planet to visit if you want to shoot some stuff. Just be sure to bring some friends along for the ride.
Borderlands will not set any benchmarks or push any envelopes in the RPG genre, or even its niche FPS-RPG setting. It simply does not do anything that we have not seen in some form or other elsewhere, nor does any individual element or mechanic uniquely stand out. What it does do is take the most basely satisfying parts of the whole RPG genre and lay them out in a fast moving buffet of bloodshed and looting. The joy of acquisition and dominance inherent to role-playing games is married to the savage joy of slaughtering entire crowds of victi.. sorry villains, and in conclusion I can heartily recommend it.
Borderlands has all in all become a decent end-of-the-year RPG with enough innovative elements and a unique look. It's not as well worked out on all points (inventory management, player classes), but due to a lack of competition it has become a top title for fans of the genre. Unfortunately the difficulty, the too strict leveling system and too limited freedom give some opposition.
You'll likely hear an abundance of other reviewers touting the four-player co-op mode as the game's best feature, and it's just one more piece of what makes Borderlands a surprisingly fun affair. Playing with friends often leads to some hilarious moments, but I vastly preferred playing solo, as the slower-paced single-player game allowed me to thoroughly consider each loot drop. The accessible nature of Borderlands -- with its relatively non-punitive deaths, constant checkpoints, and convenient fast-travel systems -- makes it a fantastic game for introducing FPS fans to some basic RPG tropes. And, most importantly, the killing and looting never ceases to be fun.
As far as crafting an all-new experience marrying two very different genres, Gearbox have definitely succeeded, they just need to focus on a few key areas to create the ultimate benchmark for the newly made "Role-Playing Shooter".
Lens of Truth
Borderlands is the quintessential multiplayer game. By no means should you play this game alone. Not that it can’t be done, but the wasteland of Pandora is vast and barren, and setting out alone becomes boring and repetitive. If you are a hermit, I would pass on this one, but if you have acquired some of the “social skills”, I highly recommend Borderlands. Easily one of the best multiplayer experiences I have had since Goldeneye 64.
Borderlands is one of the best co-op games on the market. It's fun and easy to pick up, and its unique combination of RPG and FPS elements makes it unlike anything else out there. The wide variety of skills and weapons gives you a lot of freedom in developing your character, and there is very little punishment for experimenting or playing around. However, the single-player doesn't hold up as well, and gamers who are not looking for a multiplayer experience may be best off waiting for a price drop. On top of that, a pretty substantial number of glitches — falling through an elevator, losing the ability to fire your gun, etc. — and design problems mar the experience. These glitches can pull you out of the game at a moment's notice, but if you're willing to overlook them, you'll find one of the best co-op FPSes on the market. Combining the ease of play of a FPS with the loot collection of an RPG, Borderlands has the potential to become one of the most addictive games you've ever played.
Still, none of this changes the fact that it’s a damn good game. Borderlands forgoes typical RPG seriousness and instead takes the concept of “Rednecks in space!” and runs with it. People may have a hard time swallowing the combination between Halo and Diablo, but it’s a match made in heaven - Borderlands is so far the best example of how to combine shooter and RPG mechanics. It’s rarely frustrating, always fun, and a total blast when it comes to multiplayer. While the story won’t change anyone’s life, the presentation and gameplay are more than enough reason to journey to Pandora.
Borderlands will suck players into a huge world that is just begging to be explored, but exploration isn't one of the game's strong suits. Players will undoubtedly have a great time with the different character builds, weapons, and multiplayer squad configurations, but will also be served lackluster narrative and mission structure that temper the experience. Overall, it's absolutely worth playing, however, as there is no other game that achieves cooperative RPS gameplay equivalent to what's presented here.
Borderlands is a fantastic beginning to what will hopefully become a great franchise. While it lacks certain elements that would have made it more memorable, the sleek gameplay and beautiful graphics represent a stellar example of genres melting together, something which too often fails in execution. After completing the game, a second playthough is opened, turning up the difficulty and starting the story anew, something that many gamers will likely end up taking advantage of. It might be hard to find time for Borderlands in this crowded holiday season, but it shouldn’t be ignored, and is something everyone should try out.
Borderlands is a really solid game that does deserve a look this holiday season. Being more of a single player gamer on the consoles I was a bit let down by the games lack of attention to the single player element, but was extremely impressed with the cooperative play. All in all Borderlands is a very solid outing that although contains some minor hiccups deserves a definite look in this jam packed holiday season. Be warned though, this game can take up a ton of your time.
A fairly unique composition in terms of first-person shooter meets role-playing gameplay with a stylized presentation, Borderlands offers hours of leveling to do and a never-ending supply of enemies to experiment destructive weapons on. While the story barely makes for a reason to horde equipment or play out missions with parameters of kill, kill, kill, once you add a few other players to the mix, you get a game that does well in the action-RPG scene, despite its nagging issues.
As much fun as I'm going to have in my life with comparing this to Fallout 3, they are different games in the end. Each knows what it is and while a crossover crowd will exist, both titles will cater to the userbase they aim to please. Borderlands is definitely a lot more concise and action-oriented, which works out really well in my opinion. The multiplayer aspect gives it a lot of longevity, which is supplemented with New Game+ features as well. Mission variety is decent and enemies are well varied within their types, although the most addictive part of the game's missions will be the underlying RPG elements that allow further customization and adjustments throughout the length of the title. Borderlands will have a lot of people coming back for more despite its shortcomings, and is by all means a notable title for the year.
