I loved playing Brutal Legend, and some of that may be attributed to growing up listening to a lot of metal, going to shows, wearing nothing but black tees and jeans, the whole bit. The soundtrack in particular won me over from the very start. But despite all the references to this beloved material, I also felt satisfied as a gamer, challenged by its unique blend of exploration, action and strategy. While I was prepared for a thoroughly entertaining storyline, and was not disappointed, I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun it was to wage war in and explore this lovingly-crafted world. Regardless of whether or not you've seen Iron Maiden in concert, you'll likely still want to share a few laughs and slay a few demons with Eddie and company.

From a critical standpoint, there really isn't a lot to complain about here. It's not necessarily a visual benchmark for pushing graphics engines, but that's more than made up for in art-direction, and it's a more than competant visual outlay anyway. The game-world is massive with tonnes to see and explore, though I only wish Eddie weren't so susceptible to death by water - there're tantalising islands off in the distance that just scream exploration. The only other drawback I could see for the game is if you absolutely hate metal, or have no sense of humour whatsoever, otherwise this is an unbelievably fun gaming experience with an excellent story, great art, stellar music and some seriously cool gameplay ideas. If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend you do. \m/

Brütal Legend will appeal to those of you who enjoy Heavy Metal and Rock music, the soundtrack is impressive and the game goes further than just completing the missions, there's all those collectables to unlock and a multiplayer mode. It is an open world game, which can be done as you please. The story is good, amusing and there are even romantic scenes. Can you survive the Battle of the Bands?

This is one of the best games of the year and there is a reason it won awards at E3. The game is a blast to play, the story is very well written, the characters are voiced well, and the music is awesome. If you love metal this game was made for you. If you don't there are things to like about the game, but you won't get the full experience its intended to be.

Brutal Legend started playing like a God of War style fighter and then blossomed into a great RTS and really caught me completely unawares. This is yet another must have game from EA, especially so for those who love to rock

Brutal Legend is a tour de force that wraps up humor, music, and clever gameplay into one highly polished package. You haven't played a game quite like this before and won't want to miss it. Tim Schafer is one of the funniest guys in games and Jack Black is one of the funniest guys in movies -- together they'll keep you ROFLing (although the laughs do taper off as you work your way through the game). Brutal Legend isn't quite perfect and there is room for improvement (it's a little short, side quests are repetitive...), but when the credits roll you'll find yourself hoping for a sophomore release. Double Fine created a rich heavy metal universe and backstory full of great characters and creatures, with potential for an out-of-this-world sequel. Here's hoping Schafer and company get a chance to take us there.

You owe it to yourself to give this game a test drive at some point, just for the laughs if nothing else. It may be rough around the edges and have an RTS system that would confuse some people, but overall it’s a solid game that will entertain you time and time again.

Whether it's excellent vocal performances from heavy hitters of metal or a strong multiplayer element, Brutal Legend is a game that continually surprises, and it does so in a genuinely fun and interesting way. And Double Fine deserves some major respect for keeping so many aspects of the game closely tied to its subject matter. Of course, Brutal Legend also has some shortcomings. The secondary missions are weak and the single-player campaign lasts about seven hours if you're not too keen on unlocking every single last shrine or secret item. In that respect, it's unfortunate that there's just not more of the good stuff, such as the on-foot missions with boss battles or more fleshed-out side quests. Otherwise, Brutal Legend is just about the finest tribute to this genre of music that a fan could hope for, and its successful execution of real-time strategy elements in an action setting is something that should get everyone off their feet and clapping.

I'm a casual metal fan, and I have a pretty decent knowledge of the tropes of the metal universe, so most of the humour and the overall theme of the game wasn't lost on me, but I'd hesitate to play the multiplayer if it's simply more of RTS lite gameplay. If you're big on your metal, Brütal Legend was made for you and you'll learn to deal with the quirks in the gameplay. Alternatively, if you hate metal there isn't much appeal for you here - you'll have to wait until Dave Chappelle stars in Tim Schafer's Original Gangsta* or something.

Brutal Legend’s multiple gameplay styles are competent enough on their own, although I feel the RTS elements could have been explored more during the single player. It’s fine in multiplayer, but during this busy holiday period it will be hard to sustain longevity against some of the bigger titles. It’s not complex enough for the hardcore crowd and it remains to be seen how more casual gamers will react to this odd design choice and questionable functionality. Nonetheless, it’s a bold decision and it works relatively well for the most part. The hack and slash action is fun, and the world and characters that inhabit it are all exceptional with some top notch voicework from all involved. If you enjoy those elements then it’s worth taking the ride. It just might get a little bumpy across the relatively short journey time.

With Schafer's unrelenting enthusiasm for Brütal Legend, it's clear to see where it would have been easy to get carried away with the concept. In a case where style supersedes substance, the game presents some interesting eye candy, but, at times, falters to chuggy framerates; and delivers believable characters with compelling voice-acting, in favor of less-refined gameplay. While the idea is there, and it's great to see a director and studio trying new things, the execution unfortunately falls a bit flat.

Gamestyle
Brütal Legend is a great game to visit and experience but the gameplay doesn’t make us want to stay. A shame really as the game gets a lot of points for having an excellent world to inhabit and characters to interact with. It’s just a shame the actual gameplay and lack of re-playability doesn’t really elevate this much over a really good rental.

Blend Games
With loads of humor, a good story, and great visuals, it's easy to see how people might enjoy Brutal. It's a bit of an acquired taste, though. Not everyone will like the game's emphasis on an experimental breed of real-time strategy, especially if they pick up the game expecting a hack-and-slasher or sandbox action game. That, combined with the shortish length, make me consider it a better rental than purchase. It's worth giving a spin, at any rate.

Gaming since 198x

Brutal Legend is an intense, unique, and fairly bumpy ride, one that puts developer Double Fine's strengths and weaknesses in pretty sharp relief. The vision of this heavy metal dream world is strikingly rendered, and the comic timing is some of the best you'll find in a video game. The gameplay, as singular a combination of gameplay styles as it is, suffers from being a jack of all trades and master of none. Like most teenage metalheads, this game has got issues, but if you're willing to look past some very uneven gameplay, Brutal Legend will rock you. Hard.
