Dead Island surprised us by being a tightly crafted experience, full of interesting locales and intriguing missions. It can lose its way at times, but you will find yourself coming back for one more go time and time again, as crippling zombies and saving bikini clad females never gets dull. Losing yourself on Banoi will feel like the vacation from hell, but you’ll love it.

All in all Dead Island offers both a new, and familiar take on the zombie game. By adding all of the RPG elements, they brought something more than just shooting an undead in the head. Yes, I can’t believe I am saying it. I like this RPG game. While offering a fairly deep leveling system, nothing gets so over complicated that it wears out it’s welcome.

For all of its flaws, Dead Island succeeds at what it clearly set out to do: deliver a game with an exciting, if not downright hilarious co-operative multiplayer experience. The story was barely surmisable, the character animations were janky, and there were texture pop-ins aplenty, but there are enough key ingredients in the pot to keep gamers coming back for more, especially with Techland promising more DLC (after it fixes all the problems the game currently faces, of course). Plus, it's just so much damn fun breaking each and every single bone on a zombie's body before delivering a flying boot to its face off the nearest pier. With nearly 30 hours of solid gameplay to be had and a character progression system that adds plenty of replayability, Dead Island is a rough but amiable affair wrapped around a fascinating experience that is well worth your time. All it takes is the wearwithal to endure the game's many technical headaches until things can be smoothed over by the developers.

There’s a lot to like about Dead Island. The graphics and overall sound design (the zombies are especially well voiced/moaned) are great and the control certainly ain’t broke either. With a few tweaks here and there and maybe a tad more prep time, Dead Island could have been something truly special. As it is, it just has to settle for being a fun, scarey, action packed, and at times flawed, zombie romp. So kick back, raise a drink, and aim for the head- because I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more post-life vacationing in the future.

I thought the game fell apart in the final moments, which is unfortunate only because it clouds my memory of the opening where the vibe and horror clung to me like a wet Hawaiian shirt.

The Escapist (Sep 14, 2011)
Its rough edges will distract and annoy you, but Dead Island's quest-based zombie slay-a-thon is still loads of fun. There's tons to do, plenty of toys, and the chance to pick up and play with buddies is always appreciated.
IGN (Sep 04, 2011)
Dead Island probably won't win any game of the year awards. It's got visual bugs, the controls take a bit to feel normal, and the presentation in general isn't up to snuff. But the game gets a lot right. There is a huge world to explore, thousands of zombies to kill, and tons of side quests to take. Here on the other side of a 25-hour playthrough -- where I skipped a lot of side quests after Act 1 -- I'm anxious to get back into Dead Island, and despite the game's flaws, that's not something I say often.

Dead Island is a interesting zombie RPG set in an interesting world with a tense and exciting atmosphere. It is let down by a number of issues, both technically and graphically, which is a shame because once you get into it, there is a great game here waiting to be discovered.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Sep 05, 2011)
GameSpot (Sep 06, 2011)
As a sandbox action role-playing game based on killing zombies with friends, Dead Island is a proposition rich with possibilities, and it exploits a good deal of them, if imperfectly. There's easily 20 hours of content in a single playthrough--much more if you're exploring the Polynesian paradise sandbox and messing around with trucks as much as you should be. If you don't step off the boat expecting a taut horror experience, a masterful gun game, or compelling characters, you'll have a bloody good time.
GamingLives (Sep 13, 2011)
Dead Island is an 'ok' title. I don't think it deserves the trashing that some critics have given it, but it's definitely not worth the praise it's receiving from the other side of the fence either. You will get some enjoyment out of it and if you're flitting your way in and out of Banoi during the hectic holiday season, maybe it'll even shine for you. Just heed my warnings. Dead Island is a hangover waiting to happen, letting you soak up all the enjoyment you like in the early stages and then slowly starting to make you feel ill, allowing for doubt to set in as you ask yourself why you're even doing this. After you've passed through the numb stage, the hangover kicks in and no amount of painkillers will make it better. You're stuck with it now and you should have thought more carefully about all of this before you started. One for Alcoholics.
Joystiq (Sep 05, 2011)
There's so much content in Dead Island, it's a real shame the work wasn't done to take it from functional to fun. Some of it works: There's a beautiful world to explore here, some genuinely neat ideas and cool weapons. But the end product too closely mirrors its antagonists: Shambling forward, but only just.

The Video Game Critic (Sep 30, 2012)
Dead Island feels like a cookie-cutter effort, but the refreshing scenery and rampant violence makes it worthwhile.
