Because Geometry Wars provides such intense action at little cost, no gamer has an excuse to pass up GWRE. And for you gamerscore freaks there's also 200 points included to help you catch up with the thousands of other Xbox maniacs. We all know there is nothing more satisfying than putting down a controller, sore-thumbed, knowing you spent your time well. This is the type of golden gaming moment you'll definitely encounter more than once with Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved.

Perfection is tainted by only two incredibly rare bugs. These bugs manifest themselves only to the most intense Retro Evolved players and even then these bugs aren't enough to stop players from posting 22 million point world records. In my play time I've run into the dreaded snake-spawn bug, but it hasn't been enough to stop me from loving this game… or recommending it whole heartedly to you.

It's like retro gaming with high-definition special effects. The game sounds simple: Your tiny little ship, which looks like a C with laser blasts shooting out of it, blasts a bunch of polygons, circles, snake-like worms and other geometric baddies until ... well, until you run out of lives. Which, oddly, can happen really quickly. It's kind of like the classic game "Asteroids," but with nonstop fireworks and breakneck speeds. The game is a total rush; nimble twitch skills and quick thinking are the only ways to escape a speedy demise. This one's a no-brainer for quick fun everyone will enjoy.

With the release of the Xbox 360, Microsoft brought something new to the market with Xbox Live Arcade. Using Microsoft Marketplace Points (purchased online with a credit card for about £0.85 for every 100) you can download a myriad of titles directly to your hard drive via the Xbox Live connection. While these games usually range from 400 to 800 points (about £3.50 to £7) and can be demoed before purchase, if you have the spare funds these games are excellent ways to extend the time with your new system.

There's a pinwheel on your ass. You try to run away but you're suddenly bombarded by two dozen pulsing blue diamonds. Quick, cut left - but don't get sucked in by the black hole that's inexplicably bright red. After a narrow escape to a relatively empty corner of the undulating, pinpoint-laden blue grid, you're abruptly annihilated by an explosion of what can only be described as electric sperm. If you think you're stuck in a nightmare, you're right - but when that nightmare is Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, why would you want to be anywhere else?

Gamer 2.0
The replay value of Geometry Wars is something of an anomaly. Normally a game that only had one level, no multiplayer modes, and a complete lack of any sort of need to replay the game whatsoever. However, the game is unbelievably fun. With Xbox Live leader boards, chances are you’ll always be striving for that higher score. The addition of Retro Geometry Wars is a small one, but this also adds slightly to the replay value as well. All of this fun can be had for roughly five dollars (400 marketplace points), making this the definitive Xbox Live Arcade title.

Upgrading to the full version of the game is ridiculously easy if you've bought some of these newfangled Live! Marketplace points, and if not, you can set up a credit card and buy points for a price that's comparable with what you'd get at the store anyway. It costs 400 points, which is roughly five bucks in US dollars, and it's probably the best five bucks I've spent in the last six months. So go check out Geometry Wars, or at least put it on your list of games to play once you get an Xbox 360. With the free trial you can download straight through Live!, you've got nothing to lose anyway.

There’s not much about Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved that I can truly say I dislike. It’s not a game filled with gimmicky gameplay and it isn’t designed around appealing to a specific group of gamers. It’s the type of game that puts your skills and reflexes to the test. And while it isn’t the most original game title, Retro Evolved is still a very enjoyable title. With its low price point, there isn’t any reason as to why Xbox 360 owners shouldn’t download this game.

THE game to get on Xbox Live Arcade. Features dual-analog controls and more mayhem onscreen than you can handle. Deceivingly simple at the beginning, Geometry Wars becomes the ultimate test of reflexes, bomb usage, and ship control in later sections of the game. The first time you play, you'll be lucky to get 75,000. Once the addiction grabs you, however, you'll be able to score 650,000+ on a regular basis. If it were released in the 1980s, I have no doubt it would rank among the classic arcade games of all time.

Hilfe!

Gamestyle
Geometry Wars is one of the few games on 360 where the two words "Achievement Unlocked" really matter. A solid test of the player's reflexes mixed with eye-melting visuals make this a title worth more than its weight in Marketplace points. If you complete all the achievements and make the top 100 on the leader board, Gamestyle will buy you a drink. What are you still doing here? Go earn some points.

Kombo.com
At 400 marketplace points, taking into account the current marketplace point to dollar exchange rate, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved comes out to only five bucks. This is a pittance when you consider it just may be the best game on the Xbox 360 at any price. For this gamer, it has taken valuable time away from some full-featured titles, not to mention the rest of the Xbox Live Arcade lineup (don't expect another review until August-ish, if GW:RE continues its stranglehold on my attention).

Game Chronicles
Just read my bio and you’ll see that one of the first games I ever recall playing was the arcade version of Asteroids when I was a boy, while I was admittedly crappy at the arcade version, never getting comfortable with using buttons to rotate my spaceship; I was a god with the Atari 2600 port. I played that game religiously and became so proficient at the game that I was able to wrap the score. I absolutely loved the game and to this day, I remember it fondly.

Xbox 360's stock shortages are a well-documented phenomenon, and dwelling on them at this late stage would be rather pointless. Likewise, the fact we haven't written a "proper" review of Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is a well-documented phenomenon, at least on our bubbly forums. What you didn't know though, see, is that we were biding our time; we were just waiting for the ideal moment to launch it into being, aiming to tell you all what we think about the game people often joke was the console's best at launch at precisely the time when you'd actually be able to go out and buy an Xbox 360 at the end of the review. As Gimli said rather rubbishly when he fell of his horse, it was deliberate.

The game is a treat to play and although there are only two different modes of play you do get a lot for your 400 points (which is just about £4). If you want to play the game just to get a high score then there is lots of fun to be had. If you want to add to your Gamerscore buy unlocking one of the achievements there is fun to be had there too but be warned many of them are rock hard to get! The game is also highly addictive which means you might still be playing it as we go into 2007 and long after the £40 titles you may have bought are gathering dust on a shelf. If you’re worried that the game might not be for you then download the free demo see what you think and if you do get the full game you might find out that it was the best £4 you spent all year!

It’s funny how a five-dollar (more or less) game comes along and shows how simple games can still offer great gameplay, slick presentation, and long-lasting value. You really can’t go wrong with Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, and it will only set you back a few bucks. Prepare to be eyeballing the leaderboards and achievement screens for the next while – trust me.

Everyone I have spoken to who has played this game loves it. Though I have heard the occasional person say they don’t like it but their reason is that it is too hard. I don’t agree that is a reason not to play the game. For me any game that is “too hard” is a challenge. Will you take on the challenge?

With a combination of simple but tight gameplay, fast pace, addictiveness and superb value for money, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is not only one the best games on the arcade, it’s one of the few that successfully demonstrates the philosophy behind the XBLA. While it could have used an online mode or something similar, it's still better than a lot of games that are even coming out now. If you haven’t already done so, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved should be the next game on your download queue. At its price, you simply can’t go wrong.

In the end, Geometry Wars is simply a game that will appeal to everyone on Xbox Live. It’s fast, it’s mindless, it’s fun and it’s addictive. While I prefer Mutant Storm and Astropop, I can’t deny the fact that everyone I know has Geometry Wars and getting a top score among my friends is reason enough to play it repeatedly. Highly recommended.

Twitch gaming is back with a vengeance, and it’s ironic that the most powerful console on the market is home to the renaissance of this senior citizen of game mechanics. Geometry Wars is not only an incredibly addictive shooter but is also a tour-de-force for your HDTV setup, and it will dazzle and amaze anyone who experiences it.

The price is close to nothing and it’ll pay for itself during the first night. The Game Achievements are on the harsh side, but at least it gives you something to shoot for.

GameSpot
Though some may think of the Xbox Live Arcade service as merely a conduit for classic or casual games, there is at least one game that defies all stereotyping of this kind. Originally a hidden minigame in Project Gotham Racing 2, Geometry Wars combines dual-analog space-shooting gameplay with futuristic minimalism in a game that's highly reminiscent of arcade classics like Robotron 2084. The objective is to stay alive while moving around an enclosed grid that's a little larger than the size of the screen. As you move and shoot, geometric shapes manifest and come after you, and you must evade or destroy them without making physical contact. Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved might be one of the most simplistic games at the launch of the 360, but in some ways it's also one of the most thrilling. As a result, this inexpensive little game is one that you'll more than likely keep coming back to, long after you've had your fill of most of the Xbox 360's retail launch lineup.

Gamebrink
Originally an extra mini-game for Project Gotham Racing 2, Geometry Wars quickly became such a fan favorite that Bizarre Creations decided to update it for Microsoft’s XBOX 360. This time around the gameplay is better polished, graphical effects are truly next generation, and you don’t have to buy a Project Gotham game to play it. Just head on to XBOX Live Arcade Marketplace and pick it up for around $5.

Thunderbolt Games
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is an awesome game. It’ll remind older gamers of the games they used to enjoy; though this title is featured on one of the most current consoles available, its gameplay reflects that of Asteroids, Tempest, and plenty of other classic arcade shooters. But as the name suggests, this game goes far beyond what those older games could muster. You’ll be in for an incredibly intense experience with fast-paced gameplay, fluid controls, and more enemies than you should probably shake a stick at. The game gives players a vivid show of light and color that only the Xbox 360 could render so beautifully. For just a few moments, forget about all those must-own titles for your console. The real quality can be found on the live Arcade. Geometry Wars may not be the most popular game on the Xbox 360, but it should be.

Meristation

Digital Press - Classic Video Games
While the demo system for the Live Arcade will end up hurting titles that don't quite work out as planned, that feature is in place solely to introduce more people to games like this. Geometry Wars is brilliant, and for the meager $5 price tag (which also secures you a copy of the original title from the first Xbox), it's the easiest no-brainer for the Arcade. Some form of multi-player would make this the ultimate twitch shooter.

Geometry Wars Evolved is not only one of the coolest Xbox Live Arcade games, you don’t necessarily have to buy it either. Find out what we though about this simple, yet fun shooter.

The top-selling Xbox Live Arcade game thus far for a reason. The controls (similar to several XBL Arcade games) is painfully simple.

IGN
The biggest problem at the IGN office with Geometry Wars Retro Evolved, one of the launch titles available for download via Xbox Live Arcade, is agreeing on just how addictive this little arcade space shooter is. We've decided to label it "Asteroids on Speed," and we'll leave it at that.

Planet Xbox 360
The bang for your buck this simplistic gem offers at just 400 Microsoft Points is incredible. The ideal single-player casual game; it is so addictive that you will not mind the silent two that precedes the five next time your wife or girlfriend says, "five more minutes, I just have to put on makeup".

After playing through most of the launch line up, I then wanted to check out what all the buzz was about regarding Xbox Live Marketplace and the ‘micropayment’ system that they’ve set up.
