Thanks to a combination of well-designed levels, a solid story line, addicting multiplayer and top-notch voice acting, Halo 3: ODST presents a package that is even more compelling than its namesake. The game is not only better than Halo 3; it is the best Halo title to date. And, planned or not, Bungie has also managed to create a compelling character in Gunnery Sergeant Buck. He is just as much the hero as Master Chief ever was. Here's hoping that we see more of the smartass sergeant in Halo: Reach.

ODST does suffer for the lack of genuinely new elements it adds to the Halo universe, and the campaign mode is a bit brief. Yet between the enormous scope of New Mombasa, the unique atmosphere, and the brilliance of Firefight mode, I can easily see myself pouring more time into ODST than any other Halo to date. As a student of the "quality over quantity" school of entertainment, I'll take a compact but meaty experience that keeps me coming back over a long, drawn-out exercise in tedium any day. ODST may be a side diversion in the Halo universe, but it's an awfully good one.

Halo 3: ODST is an excellent package. The delicate construction of the story adds a new wrinkle to the typical Halo plot, and the action-packed campaign levels are full of intense battles and surprising encounters. Firefight mode is a standout addition, crafting highly addictive cooperative battles for players to experience. It's disappointing that the competitive multiplayer hasn't received any updates or innovations from its Halo 3 incarnation, but it's as fun as it ever was, and well worth sinking more hours into if you haven't yet seen the many downloadable maps. ODST is a superb addition to the franchise and a must-play for anyone who craves top-notch action.

The Halo series may have passed its peak and ODST is not quite the world conquering release some may have expected, but it has grown from a small side project into a full release in its own right, which is truly worthy of Microsoft’s biggest brand. Those expecting even Halo 3.5 may feel a little underwhelmed, with 3-II the most relevant numerical comparison, but for anybody who has so much as enjoyed the series in the past, this is an essential purchase. Its disconnection from the core story of the universe makes it a perfect introduction for newcomers, whilst a fresh perspective into the Halo universe complemented by the debut of Firefight (a mode so complete and addictive it brings another dimension) will please even the most hardcore of fans. Let the war rage on.

Truthfully, ODST isn’t a “completely new gameplay experience” that Bungie initially promised. It feels and acts like Halo 3, but contains enough improvements to make the experience refreshing. Most importantly though, it appears that Bungie are learning how to write and present an excellent single-player story to match the multiplayer prowess of Halo. Although the campaign mode only takes around 6 to 7 hours to get through, every moment is memorable and action packed. The future looks good – even without Master Chef… I mean Chief in the line-up.

What was originally touted as an expansion pack has become a full fledged, self standing game. Halo 3: ODST is a shining example of how Bungie can expand the Halo story beyond the visor of Master Chief. From the campaign to Firefight to the entire Halo 3 multiplayer, you're getting a hell of a bargain for $60.

Just remember to keep it clean.

There are places where Halo 3: ODST could be improved, but when it comes right down to it, every Halo fan should buy this game. Even if you've lost interest in the franchise over the years or haven't ever given a Halo game a look, you'd do well to grab ODST and a few friends for some of the best multiplayer gaming around, especially with as wonderful an addition as Firefight. The campaign is a tad short, but well-crafted and exciting. Then there's a whole disc full of multiplayer maps, though you may already own the bulk of them.

Minor faults aside, Halo 3: ODST is far more than the 'standalone expansion' persona that it carries. A respectable campaign and hours of addition multiplayer action is worth the price tag whether or not you're a fan of the series.

GameZone
Considerably shorter, but enough of a game to make it worth your while. With the additional disc and Firefight you are getting your money's worth. Just enough to keep HALO fanatics happy with new content until HALO: Reach comes out next year.

Halo 3: ODST has a quite pleasing story, but despite a couple of spectacular set pieces (think of a "Best Of" of the previous titles) many will find the story a lot less immersive. Although ODST brought us a lot of gameplay fun it can't compete with the epic feel of the previous episode. Not playing Master Chief and the open environment brings refreshment but not enough innovation. A fine game that repeats the strong points from its bigger brother and puts them in a new and understated jacket, but doesn't offer enough extra to earn the same score.

ActionTrip
We stress that although this is an expansion pack Microsoft beefed up the retail price to $60, which, as you know, is the standard value of most full releases. Thankfully, the add-on makes up for that by offering a commendable amount of new content to enjoy both in single-player and multiplayer. Granted, completing the solo game shouldn't take you longer than 6-7 hours (maybe, less depending, of course, on your style of play). The best part is that the main campaign can be experience cooperatively, which comes highly recommended.

So it's all par for the course, then. Despite initial concerns about the price tag, Halo 3: ODST offers up a surprising glut of content for your money. Bungie aren't making a concentrated effort to reinvent the formula they've so successfully championed, and for that reason they're likely to come across their fair share of detractors. Halo 3: ODST is never going to be considered game of the year, but Firefight in particular will likely be played for a long time to come.

Gameplanet
Halo 3: ODST is a well structured addition to the Halo franchise. The firefight multiplayer alone will give it momentum, even when the all-too-short campaign runs out of steam. Bungie have shown that there's life in the franchise yet, although it's likely to still grate on some Halo fans that they have to pay near full price, and for that reason, many newcomers probably just won't bother.

However, it’s Firefight that seals the deal. Even if you already own Halo 3 you’re going to want to check this mode out; there’s no matchmaking system for it though, so you will need Halo friends, which isn’t something we all have, but if you’re a Halo fan with friends you don’t want to be left out now, do you?

Xbox360Achievements
Bungie’s latest storytelling method in ODST is certainly unique and captivates the imagination from beginning to end, but the problem is, just when you really start to get going, the experience ends. The single player campaign is far too short and can barely push 7 hours on the hardest difficulty, but there is plenty of replayability within the game’s new Horde, I mean, Firefight mode. Whacking in the original 21 Halo 3 maps won’t affect a great amount of people who’ve already paid through their noses for them, but there are 3 new ones... and one of those is a remake. The less said there, the better. A great game otherwise, but we really expect more of Bungie these days and its flagship franchise.

Game Shark
All in all, ODST is a solid addition to the Halo franchise. The fractured way the campaign is set up is annoying, but the included Firefight mode, co-op campaign support, and Halo 3 Multiplayer disc easily push this over the top for anyone that might be on the fence.

Softpedia
Acquire it for the multiplayer element or to get a bite of Halo lore and action before Reach comes around and (hopefully) wraps the series up and allows Bungie to develop something new and possibly as good and revolutionary as the first game in this series. Just make sure you do not set your aspirations for ODST too high. There's almost nothing here you have not seen before, with the possible exception of Sadie's Story and a couple of fresh combat tactics.

Gamestyle
In many ways ODST seems like a “Greatest Hits” selection of Halo gameplay with vehicle sections, sniping sections, close quarters combat and so forth, oh and no Flood. The flashback missions are undoubtedly the most fun, while the hub level can get tedious with having to walk everywhere. However at the end of the day the single player campaign and Firefight could easily have been done as DLC, and aside from Firefight it doesn’t really bring anything new to the table. There may be some grumbles for some who bought the DLC maps for the Halo 3 multiplayer only to shell out £30 for them again and only getting three new maps as compensation. Still it’s a good solid package but don’t be expecting anything too new.

Blend Games
While Halo 3: ODST certainly turned out larger than what Bungie had initially planned, it didn't quite make the leap from "expansion" to "full game." It has a campaign comparable in length to other games in the series and Firefight's a nice new addition to Halo 3's impressive multiplayer suite. As long as you don't expect ODST to be a sequel to Halo 3, you should enjoy yourself.

Console Monster
All in all this add-on to the series is a worthy one. With the RRP of £34.99 you can't really go wrong as Firefight alone is amazing. Chuck in some good missions, some new multiplayer maps as well as all the previous DLC available, plus a Halo: Reach BETA code, and you have one hell of an add-on game. If you're a fan of the series, or are just looking for a game to tie you over until Modern Warfare 2, ODST is a must have for you.

Our fear had been that the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers would struggle to escape the Master Chief's shadow, but the developer's improving craft means they have no difficulty doing so over a short distance. Instead, it's the shadow cast by Halo 3 itself, and its contemporaries then and since, that proves slightly too long and broad for Bungie's valiant efforts of the past 18 months to escape, because no matter the quality of what's on offer, they can't reasonably make the same demand of your wallet, and yet they still do. It's all the more disappointing, because as a roadmap to the future of Halo, if not the future of Bungie, Halo 3: ODST is fantastic.
80
Giant Bomb
Halo 3: ODST fills in a few interesting spots in the Halo timeline, even if the characters themselves aren't strong enough to carry the narrative. But it strikes a healthy balance between new twists and more content done in Bungie's trademark style. The more important thing is that if you've enjoyed playing Bungie's Halo games in the past, chances are you'll continue to enjoy that style in ODST.
80
GameSpy
While ODST could have been a lot different from other games in the franchise, it is what it is: A great Halo game with a fun, cleverly told story and a fantastic new multiplayer mode. Perhaps somewhere down the line my dreams of a squad-based ODST game will be realized. For now, I have an entertaining game with a multiplayer component I know I'll come back to again and again. If nothing else, ODST proves that you don't need a space ring or Master Chief to make a good Halo game.
80
GameDaily
Experienced Halo vets will probably criticize ODST for its lack of new multiplayer modes, maps and of course, Master Chief; after all, serious Halo fans probably purchased those 21 maps several months ago. That makes the game's $59.99 MSRP a bit tough to swallow; to us seasoned Halo players, this feels more like a $39.99-$49.99 package. But for the new Halo fan, ODST has a satisfying amount of content. Fightfight's sweet, the single player adventure's good enough and that second disc has a lot to offer. So while it doesn't reveal Master Chief's whereabouts, Halo 3: ODST is a welcome addition to the series and another quality first person adventure.

PAL Gaming Network (PALGN)
A well done story, large set pieces and a new co-op mode are great, but aren't enough to make Halo 3: ODST as different as it was supposed to be.
75
Game Revolution
Though the core design was focused on the fans, Halo 3: ODST has enough in it for both veterans and newcomers alike. Reminiscent of Half Life: Blue Shift, a solid story supported by excellent voice casting, this new entry in the Halo universe was promoted from expansion to stand alone game. Though I would have liked to see more new enemies and weapons, Halo 3: ODST is a solid FPS game and a good addition to the Halo franchise.

VideogameUK
Overall, a cheaper price point (say £20 – £25) would have made this a necessity, but as it stands it just feels like an expansion pack gone mad and it won’t please the collective, I can tell you. Dangling the carrot of the Reach Beta just makes it even harder to take. Even so, I have to give some credit to a well written and nicely designed single player experience, which is worth playing, but it’s just a shame it’s trapped in a sea of re-released duplication. Let us hope they don’t do it again with the next instalment in the saga or else there will be a REAL uprising.

GamersHell.com
True, ODST marks a bit of an experimental departure for the established and wildly popular Halo franchise, but it's too hard to wash the word “marketable” from the mouth after playing through the campaign in its stretched out entirety. New weapons and new characters, three exclusive maps, new co-op multiplayer, Halo: Reach invite: marketable. While there is a lot to be proud of scattered throughout the double-disc set, a hub system that drags the main game's action to a halt and some unnecessary inclusions detract from an entire package with an unjustified MSRP.

Lens of Truth
I can honestly only recommended Halo 3: O.D.S.T. to those who don’t already own a certain Halo on the 360 – or for those fans who simply must have a Halo Reach beta key, and everything Halo at the very first moment they can. For everyone else, wait for O.D.S.T. to drop…in price.

Good Game
Yeah firefight's okay...I know I’m seeming quite negative but I was really looking forward to a change of pace with ODST, and I just think there’s some missed opportunities here...by having no Masterchief they could have gone down a really gritty rookie against the odds path with a whole different set of weapons or look, and that would have been awesome, but in ODST you do just feel like a weaker Masterchief and sometimes that can make you a bit angry at the game, instead of revelling in the challenge. I’m giving it 7/10.
70
Wonderwallweb.com
In all honesty, the game could have been better. The fans hoped for many things to go ahead, but came out with nothing. A few new features don’t really constitute a game and from this title it seems that the Halo series may have had its day.
65
AusGamers
Halo 3: ODST is too little in its dual parts to offer a solid experience. There are awesome moments riddled throughout, but these come at the price of dealing with annoyingly frustrating bottlenecks as well as misplaced deviations in gameplay. The Rookie quest is an interesting idea, but barely has enough to carry itself as a stand-alone and enjoyable concept, relating poorly to gameplay, leaving it more as a chore to get behind his VISR than an enjoyable break from the chaos that is staple Halo gameplay injected into the flashback sequences. Halo fans will likely eat this up, but if you've had your fill of Covenant and faceless human heroes, you're honestly not going to miss much by missing this.

The Review Busters
I was looking forward to this game and then it hit me. ODST is still that expansion we were going to get from Bungie but it got a few minor tweaks to get more fun from fans. I was upset with the small campaign and the stupid detective aspects. Online play is still the only reason to play Halo games. If you are sick of Halo 3 then you might as well buy this game, but if I were you then wait for the next Halo game because Bungie is promising much more with this one (I’m not holding my breath).

Good Game
For a full priced game, and the change to health packs doesn’t change the gameplay enough. I’m sending back my Halo fanboy membership. 6/10 from me.

ODST might give Halo fans something extra to chew on, but I found this half-hearted effort to be a bit of a turn-off.

As it is, Halo 3: ODST doesn't seem like a worthwhile purchase for anyone - not even hardcore fans. The crazy Halo 3 fans will already own 90% of the multiplayer maps included with ODST, meaning they'll pick up three whole maps for their RRP $99. They'll also get an extremely short singleplayer campaign and Firefight mode - Bungie could have released Firefight as a DLC pack for Halo 3, released a second map pack including the three new maps and skipped the singleplayer campaign, although I'd genuinely miss the music and the voice acting. The core gameplay of ODST is decidedly average - as such it earns a decidedly average score.

Ultimately Halo 3: ODST’s campaign is a big disappointment while it introduces some great multiplayer features. The tipping point for recommending the game is based upon your habits and if you’re not a fan of multiplayer this is at best a rental title if you must experience the campaign.
