Import Tuner Challenge

Conceptually, free-roaming racing (even if it's better-executed in Test Drive Unlimited) and challenging rival drivers is something that has a future in racing games as the genre experiments with new ideas. For the time being, however, Import Tuner lacks either the impressive visuals we've come to expect from next-gen games (racing titles, especially), or a well-executed new feature that contrasts it from other offerings in the genre. It may appeal to a group of auto-savvy street racers who delight in leaving relatively simple A.I. in the dust, but Import Tuner Challenge doesn't bring enough visual horsepower or fine-tuned gameplay to make it past its speedy competitors.

If you can force your way through the early part of the game and get to where the cars don't seem so sluggish anymore, and if you can handle the limited amount of road you'll have to race on, Import Tuner Challenge is a game that grows on you. It may not offer personality, but there's a certain thrill to taking out all of these other racing teams, upgrading your car, and moving on to the next batch of teams. But it's still a repetitive and often tedious game, and considering its full $59.99 price and the many better driving games available for the Xbox 360, Import Tuner Challenge is very difficult to recommend.

An diesem Spiel haben wohl nur Rennspiel-Neulinge oder Fans des Vorgängers Tokyo Highway Challenge (Dreamcast, PS2) ihre Freude. Sicherlich läuft das Spiel flüssig und sieht nicht einmal schlecht aus - doch Präsentation, KI und Spielführung sind nicht okay. Tuningbegeisterte Spieler setzen deshalb eher auf Need for Speed: Carbon, Fans guter Fahrphysik, Fahrzeuglizenzen aus aller Welt und abwechslungsreicher Strecken bleiben bei Project Gotham Racing 3 - und Actionfans fahren besser mit Burnout Revenge ein paar spaßige Takedowns ein.

Import Tuner Challenge hinterlässt einen zwiespältigen Eindruck. Zu unausgewogen fallen KI, Spielmechanik und Schwierigkeitsgrad aus. Mit einem entsprechend ausgestatteten Auto stellen die Gegner keine wirkliche Herausforderung mehr dar. Andererseits lassen die vielen Tuning- und Einstellmöglichkeit das Herz japanophiler Autonarren höher schlagen. Und auch auf der Piste gibt es einige spaßige Momente. In kaum einem anderen Rennspiel lässt es sich so entspannt fahren wie in diesem.

Import Tuner Challenge gör egentligen ingenting riktigt bra, men samtidigt gör det inte heller någonting riktigt dåligt. Det är helt enkelt ett medelmåttigt bilspel som vi säkerligen kommer att ha glömt bort om ett par år, men gillar du arkadracers och gillar att ställa in saker som stötdämpning och utväxling för att maximera din bils prestanda kan det ge dig en hel del timmars underhållning.

Another racer on the Xbox 360 trying to differentiate itself by offering multitudes of customization options to appeal to the gear heads out there who just might be among the gaming population. Import Tuner Challenge is Ubisoft's evolution of the Tokyo Extreme Racer series, but the term "evolution" is used somewhat liberally. Import Tuner Challenge utilizes the same method of play and goes as far as using the same rival racing teams, and it even races on essentially the same course as TER.
