Just Cause 2 is big, loud, bombastic fun. You’ll have such a good time creating ungodly chaos that you’ll barely notice its few shortcomings.
The original Just Cause was a little rough around the edges but the sequel is highly polished and looks great. I could easily see myself logging a hundred hours or more in to the game, it’s probably the most comprehensive sandbox game I’ve played. If you enjoy the genre this is a must have, and if you like a spy story then it’s definitely worth a look too.
Despite a host of shortcomings, the game itself is still a must-buy. The game-world is incredibly engaging, riddled with secrets and fun tools to keep you playing and sandboxing for a long, long time and it just looks so damn good. Varying weather conditions and effects keep it constantly in a state of visual flux and means - overall - you're always in for a new, unique visual treat. If you're the sort of player who's happy to sit back and marry mechanics with your own creativity, there's no end to how much you'll get out of Just Cause 2, while story junkies might do well to be warned: this stuff is pretty loose in delivery - don't expect GTA-quality story-telling, but definitely expect a lot of fun.
Open world sandbox games are a dime a dozen now days, but few can match the enjoyment that Just Cause 2 provides. You’ll spend hours having a great time messing around in the environment. There are plenty of weapons, plenty of vehicles, and plenty of situations to create chaos. The grappling hook is one of the best mechanics in an open world game in a long time. Add in infinite parachutes and you’ll spend a lot of time approaching various situations from multiple angles. Just Cause 2 is a summer blockbuster packed into a video game, and if you enjoy action games you’ll want to check this one out.
Just Cause 2 isn’t going to win any prizes for its trite story and constricting mission structure, but it’s a game that provide moments that no other game can create. The grappling hook revamp has created a gadget that is nothing short of stunning, but the game’s many annoyances hold it back from dominating the sandbox/open-world genre.
These aren't game-breaking flaws, however; certainly not in light of the huge world Just Cause 2 places at your fingertips. Even the glitches you encounter--sound stutters, maybe a lockup or two--aren't likely to be too bothersome, and can be somewhat alleviated by installing the game to your hard drive. But Just Cause 2 stands out more for its joys than its blemishes. After all, you can grapple to a gas canister, shoot it, and fly into the air like a rocket. And if that sounds like fun to you, it's time for a vacation to the island paradise of Panau.
It got to the point where I almost forgot about the cool items available and didn’t even look at the normally-satisfying explosions that just occurred. Still, as weary as one might become, it was hard to stop. Just one more town, I said to myself. Just one more base, I said once that town was conquered. Just one more mission, I said after the base was wiped out. Once I started playing, it was hard to stop. Sometimes I just needed to be reminded about all the great ways that chaos can be caused. Other times, I just had to sit back and watch the sunset. Panua, after all, is a paradise.
