The Video Game Critic
Finally, I can't comprehend how such a polished, full-featured basketball game could possibly have such a ass-backward menu interface! That sucks, but at its core NBA 2K10 manages to be both true-to-life and fun - with eye candy to spare.
Both games will offer opportunities for depth of play with a bit of exploration and experimentation. There is plenty basketbally action here, but in this head to head match-up for folks venturing into video-game net action, the Electronic Arts NBA Live 10 edges out 2K Sports NBA 2K10 with a three pointer on the buzzer.
Game Freaks 365
All in all, NBA 2K10 is very disappointing for someone who isn't a fan of the series or of basketball in general. Granted, someone who doesn't like the sport probably won't be so inclined to drop sixty dollars on this game, so no harm no foul. I have friends that love basketball and say that 2K10 is the way to go when it comes to picking between this and EA's Live title, but really I would rent both before deciding. Since the controls are pretty easy to get into, if not a little lacking in execution, and you're looking for something new to get into, I would recommend a rental to you over anything. I was hoping a tiny bit that 2K10 would do like the other sports titles I have played recently and "converted" me to watching the real life counterpart, but no, I still will have no idea who is in the playoffs this year, nor do I care.
2009's crop of NBA video games offers substantial diversity, and NBA 2K10 is a very different experience from NBA Live 10. The emphasis is placed firmly on speed and explosiveness, creating an upbeat tempo that is fast and exciting. Strategy is less important because of the juiced-up action, though, so more thoughtful players should turn to NBA Live 10 for their basketball fix. However, if you love hanging around the hoop, NBA 2K10 is a lot of fun. Despite a few bugs and grading inconsistencies, it's easy to get lost in the in-depth My Player mode or to have an exciting online game with a group of lane-driving buddies.
