RetroManiac (Jul 05, 2010)

Perfect Dark is a great example of how to take a beloved classic and update it for the modern era while allowing memories to remain untainted. Priced perfectly (yup, pun completely intended), Perfect Dark is a worthy and must have addition to any Xbox 360 library.

Game Revolution (Mar 26, 2010)
Perfect Dark for Xbox Live Arcade has done exactly what it should do as a port, especially with its mere $10 price point. It retains so much of what made the game fun and entertaining way back when, while still modernizing the controls and multiplayer fare to stand up to modern audiences. New players will find a lot to enjoy and the people who completed speed runs blindfolded will find new layers to enjoy.

Frustrations aside, Perfect Dark is a great example of how a remake should be done. In the original, it almost felt like you were punished for making the gameplay exciting: More action resulted in more slowdown. Now, it runs smooth as silk whether you're sneaking around with a tranquilizer gun or diving into a multiplayer match with rockets blazing. Fans of the original shouldn't hesitate to pick this one up and relive their Nintendo 64 memories.

Boasting gadgets and set-pieces that the more recent update struggled to improve upon, and multiplayer maps you probably wore ruts into the best part of a decade ago, this is an enviable chunk of nostalgia. Zero may have proved that it's hard to create a fitting sequel to a classic, but to see the original Perfect Dark slotting into place so well on XBLA is enough to suggest that, just sometimes, restoration might be a better solution than reinvention.

The wait for Perfect Dark on the Xbox 360 has been worth it, but don't hand over your 800 Microsoft Points expecting a modern FPS. This is old-school gaming, with none of the modern day handholding we're used to, but it's jam-packed with gaming goodness. The campaign can be frustrating due to a lack of direction, but it's still full of great moments, and the multiplayer is as much fun as it ever was. Perfect Dark is no longer the pinnacle of console shooters, but it's clear why it was held in such high regard. Yes, it's better when played while wearing rose-tinted spectacles, but anyone who enjoyed the original already owns a pair.

The wrinkles are almost entirely showing on the single-player side, with clunky animation and AI being the worst offenders. But for fans of the original the chance to revisit a favourite in new HD clothing - and take it online - is no-doubt one that should be jumped at, and newcomers will also likely discover a surprisingly deep deathmatch game that's still relevant in 2010.

Teletext (2010)
On top of the competitive multiplayer there's also a co-op mode where you play the single player mode either as an ally or as any of the enemies. These were throwaway novelties at the time and aren't terribly well implemented, but again the willingness to experiment is admirable. And that's really this re-release's great achievement: to show how lazy and unambitious most modern shooters are.

Perfect Dark HD is the version of the classic N64 game that highlights everything that worked well and patches holes that revolved around pushing the cart-based system to its absolute limit. With improved textures at 60 frames per second, the action doesn't skip a beat. The gameplay holds up incredibly well for being nearly a decade old and highlights just how well this game was designed originally. Gamers not used to using only one analog stick for a FPS might be put off by the controls since they feel limiting. If the single-player experience doesn't do a good enough job of making an attractive offering, the multiplayer mode is now compatible with Xbox Live where the GoldenEye 64 options are sure to be crowd pleasers.

Combine this with the legendary multiplayer, and you get a console shooter which was arguably the Halo for 2000's N64 - groundbreaking, enjoyable, and setting the standards for all to follow.

Despite some outdated design decisions, this is still a fun and exciting shooter, and for only 800 Microsoft points, it's well worth going back to.

There are a few redeeming factors in the single-player, but generally this is only a good value if you plan on playing online for most of the experience, or if you're looking to educate yourself about a bygone era of gaming.

Perfect Dark is the perfect reincarnation of the clasic. It not only looks a bit sharper but also plays faster. Those that already checked it out ten years ago will no doubt have fun with it and have no problem what so ever to give 800 Microsoft Point for it. Whether newcomers will feel like playing it is another thing. Compared to titles from now there are many shortcomings that you just can't ignore. If you ask us: only for the fans

Ultimately, like watching an old episode of "The Goodies". Perfect Dark XBLA serves best as a pointed reminder of how far things have come. Like watching "The Goodies", however, playing Perfect Dark today will permanently impact your perception of the game (and probably not positively at that). This might be one title that is best left in the past, where rose tinted glasses and time itself can protect it from the games that it no doubt inspired. Those which have long since (and far) surpassed it.

Gamer Limit (Mar 24, 2010)
But judged alongside the other games that scream out for your wallet’s attention, this just doesn’t offer what modern gamers are looking for. I had next to no fun with the single player, and next to no luck playing online. Let’s just say this: thanks to my unique fashion sense, in which retro goggles are not included, Perfect Dark was simply not a good fit, and if your situation is anything like mine, it won’t look any good on you either.

AceGamez (Apr 02, 2010)
It’s a shame that a game that was so revolutionary and such good fun to play ten years ago has stagnated to such a damaging degree. It may be a landmark title, but its aged so badly that Perfect Dark’s gameplay has become majorly redundant. It’s like a favourite toy: well-loved, and good for a quick blast of nostalgia now and again, but nothing else.

Totally Gaming Network (Mar 29, 2010)
For what it’s worth, this is the closest you’ll probably ever get to seeing a Goldeneye-like game on the Xbox Live Arcade, so if you’ve got a burning desire to see whether the gameplay is still as amazing as you thought it was, then this will give you a fair indication. Needless to say, if you’ve still got a lot of fond memories of the original Perfect Dark and your clunky old N64, try the demo at least – you might still love it despite its rather old-fashioned look and feel.

D+PAD Magazine (Apr 09, 2010)
Whenever I play Perfect Dark I remember that old-store. I remember being a kid. That’s a personal connection, one that’s impossible to convey properly or share with someone who didn’t grow up with it, the masses who might see this on LIVE Arcade and cackle at the moth-eaten plainness and give it no more thought. But however much I want to plug this as an essential experience missing from their videogaming knowledge, one they absolutely need to have, I can’t. It’s a brass-tacks, cliché-ridden, unspectacular romp that holds little weight against contemporary offerings. It’s by no means a bad game, in parts it’s still devastatingly delightful and for 800MSP you could do far worse, but if you haven’t been on board before just don’t expect any fireworks.
