IGN UK (Oct 15, 2009)
Improved graphics, streamlined tactical options and a relatively robust take on the series' winning formula ensure that this is the best PES yet, though it's not quite enough to topple FIFA from its well-earned perch. On the pitch it’s the same joyous game that’s won so many plaudits in the past, its fast-paced approach encouraging the sort of outlandish play that means nearly every match is a classic, and while this is some way off being the all-round package offered by EA, it’s probably the most fun way to play football with a controller available.

I don’t mean to make Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 sound like a bad soccer game, because it isn’t. It’s just a disappointing one. Just about everything except the visuals feels a bit stale, even the new Become A Legend mode which feels like it’s from an ’08 edition. The gameplay is solid; it just isn’t able to keep pace with FIFA 10 in most regards. It’s tough to recommend this to anyone when EA Sports’ superior product is on the market, but if you’re a diehard PES lover, you’ll feel right at home with this one.

It’s tough to say which is better, Pro Evolution or FIFA, given that the former has more depth while the latter comes off as the sexier experience. Perhaps these two will continue to do what they’ve done in the past – appeal to slightly different sets of players – which means the war for soccer supremacy wages on.

The problem for PES, however, is that after years of being well ahead of the game it is now playing catch-up and Konami has given EA’s FIFA series a hell of a head start. After putting significant hours into both games we’re more than happy to give Konami a nod of encouragement and to say ‘hey, that is more like it. Now we are getting somewhere.’ But that doesn’t change the fact that FIFA 10 is a superior soccer experience in pretty much every component and in a two horse race if you’re not first, you’re last.

When it comes to the battle of FIFA vs Pro Evolution Soccer, in the end it comes down to a matter of taste. If you are after realism and polish then FIFA is probably for you, if however you want a fast flowing, action packed game then you may want to check PES out.

There's no denying that PES 2010 is an excellent game of football - it's just that PES's 'E', Evolution, is more suited to its chief rival.

PES 2010 is the best version Konami has put out for home consoles to date. The franchise seems to have matured over the last year, playing like it always should have. The online options are compelling and diverse (though suffer from a spot of lag), and the offline game modes have been refined significantly. While the lack of extensive licensing continues to keep the PES franchise firmly in the number two spot, players that are interested in a European-centric take on footie might not have many qualms in this regard.

Unfortunately, despite all the new additions in PES 2010 and things it does get right, you get the feeling of underwhelming achievement, like it should have been so much more. The bar is raised each year, never more so than Fifa 10 this year, and the simple fact is, the two games ARE in direct comparison to one another, and given all of Fifa's improvements and innovations, PES feels almost stale stood beside it. Going back to the original question raised in this review, Fifa or PES, the answer is clearly Fifa this year, and it's hard to imagine why anyone looking for the best new football game on the market would opt for PES over FIFA, unless they are stubborn fans of the series who are too attached and in denial. FIFA betters PES in almost every area this year, and the series continued lack of major gameplay innovations is becoming quite worrying to say the least, adding pre-mature age and lineage to an otherwise decent title.

Overall Konami have upped their game in terms of bringing back the good old days of Pro Evolution Soccer. However with EA's FIFA series has been growing leaps and bounds each year, I'm not too sure if it's too late for Konami to gain the fans interest back. By all means if you were a PES fan I recommend you at least give PES another chance. Worthy purchase for fans of the series and hopefully Konami can move in the right direction from here.

It's hard to imagine why gamers would opt for PES over FIFA this year unless they are such stubborn fans of the series that they'll never let go. FIFA betters Konami's offerings more or less across the board this time around, while PES' continued lack of substantial gameplay innovations (even without any comparisons to FIFA) is becoming quite worrying to say the least.

Eurogamer.net (UK) (Oct 15, 2009)
Long-time Eurogamer readers will know that I've no particular loyalty to either series. I spent years advocating Pro Evolution Soccer because I thought it was better, during which time I kept an eye on FIFA but rarely went near it (with one memorable, 2/10 exception). Last year though, EA Canada made it an easy switch, outgunning Konami in almost every area for the first time. That's not entirely true this year: PES 2010's team management options are a warning sign that the Japanese developer still has some tricks up its sleeve, and people for whom the transition to another football game is simply too much to countenance will buy and enjoy this, and discover it still plays a good, grass-roots game. For everyone else though, up is still down, because FIFA wins again.

videogamer.com (Oct 15, 2009)
At the end of the day, though, PES 2010 is simply not good enough to challenge FIFA's dominance. It's an improvement on last year's effort, and fans of the more arcadey virtual football will find plenty to enjoy, but as a simulation it pales in comparison. PES 2010 is a return to form, but it is not a return to past glories. PES fans that have crossed over to FIFA in recent years need not concern themselves with switching back. Perhaps it's best to use a real world analogy: if FIFA 10 is Manchester United, then PES 2010 is Aston Villa. Despite flashes of class, only one team is capable of winning the Premier League.

So, Pro Evo 2010 doesn't have the licenses of FIFA, doesn't have the budget of FIFA, and it doesn't have the smooth online experience of FIFA. It even has the odd translation issue here and there, such as using "stopped time" instead of the correct "stoppage time." But in spite of all the technical gaffes, it's clear that producer Shingo "Seabass" Takatsuka and his team at Konami still have a handle on the heart and soul of the beautiful game. Yes, FIFA is the superior offering this year -- but it's a lot closer than you might initially think. If Takatsuka's team tackles the animation issues and online hiccups next year like they addressed the graphics, presentation, and Master League this year, we could have a 2010 videogame footballing derby worthy of Premier League titans Liverpool and Man United. And just in time for the World Cup, too!

GameSpot UK (Oct 28, 2009)
Pro Evolution Soccer still plays a good game of football, and if you loved previous games in the series, you'll no doubt enjoy playing this year's model. However, Pro Evo can no longer claim to be the best football game in any given area, and other than the incremental improvements made over the past few years, it's in desperate need of a complete overhaul. Fixing problems, such as online play, is certainly welcome, but for a game that hasn't substantially changed across five years and two console generations, there's a definite sense of diminishing returns from this increasingly stale series.

When Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 is good, it is very good. When the A.I, both on the CPU and player teams, is doing what it should be it runs like a dream. There are few things that feel as good as smacking a 30 yard screamer into the top corner or pulling off a beautiful passing move. Unfortunately the A.I is inconsistent at best and god awful at worst. Players on your team make incomprehensible decisions and opposing players become supermen on the higher difficulties. At the end of the day Pro Evo looks and feels dated. The game engine is still essentially the one that was developed ten years ago with tweaks and changes. The whole game needs a massive overhaul to stay relevant in the coming years so as not to be eclipsed by FIFA.
